I will be spending my honeymoon at the Ester Lee in mid August. We plan to go to the casino. I was wondering how far it is from our motel. Sounds like Dory Cove is the place to eat. Also the happy hour at the Inn at Spanish Head. Any suggestions for crabbing in the area? How far is it to Netarts?
August in Lincoln City
Casino probably less than 10 miles. 15 mins in Feb, 30 mins and more in Aug
Netarts?? 50 miles
I stayed at Spanish Head a few times years ago. i do not remember much of a happy hour.
You can crab in the Siletz at Taft (s end of Lincoln City), not sure how good it is, but see people doing it. we crab off docks in Newport.
Dory Cove was once great place to go, probably still is.
August in Lincoln City
It%26#39;s about 3.5 miles from the Ester Lee to the casino. I don%26#39;t know about Dory Cove, but I think you%26#39;d like Otis Cafe, which I think is nearby. Been a few years since I%26#39;ve been there, though. Netarts is over 40 miles from Lincoln City. Newport is closer, and I%26#39;ve been crabbing there a few times.
Congrats!
3.5 miles?? Shows how well I know miles there, maybe it just seems like almost 10. I remember 20 miracle miles. but not what it included
Thanks for all the info. I have had a marionberry pie brought to me from the Otis cafe, and it was delicious. I have heard the rest of the food is good as well. Sounds like traffic on 101 in August could be a problem. I guess we%26#39;ll plan to gamble in the wee hours, and hope traffic is lighter. You guys are great.
I think casino shuttles from some motels. Just have to be patient in summer months. Lots of people at the coast. Doesn%26#39;t stop us from going.
Did you check the entertainment at Chinook Winds? They have website Wynonna and STYX have concerts in Aug. we will be there when STYX is on, maybe our kids will want to go.
we started staying in Depoe Bay 5 or 6 years ago in a condo unit. with full kitchen, so our days of eating out at the coast have shrunk. we were regulars at Dory Cove even though we had to wait outside sometimes. They did some great things with seafood. One place I would eat oysters. some do bad things to oysters.
That Ester Lee is a landmark on the coast. they have been there forever. and have a loyal clientele.
Curious, why Netarts. other places I would drive 50 miles to see. we passed through there in Mar, been several years and it has changed.
We are going to arrive on the 20th, so I think we will miss casino entertainment. Good to hear about Dory Cove. I will be wanting a big bucket of steamer clams. I was wondering about Netarts because I have been crabbing there before, but couldn%26#39;t remember how far to Lincoln City. I thought as long as we were going to have a kitchen, we might want some fresh crab.
Ever since they started requiring a license to crab we have quit crabbing. we just go to the docks in Depoe Bay and buy one or two. Usually a sign on 101 when they are selling there. License coasts amost as much and if you get skunked really not worth it. And we have been skunked more times in Newport than we have had keepers.
we have three weeks at coast innext 4 months so maybe i will buy a crabbing license and try again.
We used to camp at Netarts 15 years ago or more, on the little bay. and would find clams. but when we went by in Mar the whole area has developed so not as accessible. looked really different.
Thanks phirl. I was thinking it might be fun to rent a boat for two or three hours and let her try it, but it sounds as though it may not be worth it. That leaves more time for gambling and drinks.
Don%26#39;t let me put a damper on that. we have never crabbed from boat so that might be better. But suggest you look closer to cntral oreg coast. You see boats in Yaquina Bay crabbing. probably in siletz too.
The first year they required a license we got one for my wife, but than I supposedly could do nothing. since we were on docks we tried to do it right. we normally throw out 3 or 4 pots and share pulling them. she did a lot of pulling. I did bait for her. and checked for legal. She is not real excited turning over those crabs.
we have the pots so do not need expense of renting those.
We chose not to stay at a place with kitchen, because you could not cook crab in unit. We spend any time at coast we cook crab, bought or caught. . and even more so if middle daughter joins us which she often does.
Thanks for the advice. We have limited time, so it might not be worth it. I will be making sure we buy some fresh crab somewhere. It sounds like that will not be a problem.
