son and d-i-l come thurs with 2 grandsons, 12 and 9 and granddaughter 22 from San Diego. Wife, d-i-l and gr-d planning wine tour on Sat any great ideas appreciated for places that may be open. I will google it but personal ideas better.
Men not invited. Fine with me.
women wine tourSpounds fun! We were in the wine country a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed lunch at Tina%26#39;s in Dundee. There is also the Dundee Bistro where we have enjoyed lunch. For some very nice wineries, I would recommend Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit. We loved Domaine Serene also in this area. Tell them to save these places for last, tho.
Torii Mor was nice, we like their Reserve Pinot Noir. If they go to Carlton, the Winemakers Studio is pretty and you can taste several wines there. Scott Paul is also not to miss in Carlton. If they are looking for a very nice place for dinner after their tasting, the Joel Palmer House is excellent. I have a review posted under the Dayton Restaurant section with photos. Cheers! :)
women wine tourHi phirl,
Mtngrl and mistletoe both live very close to wine country..or in it.
They give the best recommendations for good wineries and places to eat.
Thanks to their help, we went to Dundee Bistro a couple of weeks ago as well as Ponzi vineyards. ( we were there to see a man about a dog ) so we just sort of came upon the vineyard..I liked Dundee but I think Mtngrl went somewhere else recently that was even better..
What a nice weekend you are going to have !! :O)
I would definitely listen to mistletoe as he is more into tasting than I am. I do have some good friends in the wine business though, so I use their recommendations and so far they have been good. Here are some suggestions, in no particular order.
Domain Drouhin (one of our friends is with them)--pricier but good.
Anne Ami (friends family owns this place)--inexpensive but good.
Erath--middle of the road for pricing, but good. Recently bought out by Chateau St. Michelle out of Washington, which I am sure your son is familiar with.
Ponzi--I personally do not care for the regular wines, but the dessert wine, Vino Gelato, is really good. Mid priced.
Rex Hill--Some very good reserves. Nice views from here. Price ranges really vary. North end of Newberg, on west side of 99W.
Chehalem--Across the highway from Rex Hill, usually by appt only. Really like this place.
Amity--Down closer to Salem. Really like this place too.
Argyle--Across from Dundee Bistro. Great sparkling wine.
If they want a casual place for lunch, the Wild Wood Cafe in McMinnville is really good. We were there yesterday and loved it. Very casual, not at all like the typical bistros that focus on wines. They serve breakfast all day and the atmosphere is fun. It is on Baker St, just north of Linfield.
phirl,
Men might not be invited, but if the women stop at all the places suggested, they%26#39;re going to need a designated driver!! How much into wine are they? And do you think they%26#39;d prefer the beaten path or the road less traveled? When we go, we tend to focus on a particular area, but here%26#39;s a suggestion....
Get on Scholl%26#39;s Ferry towards Newberg. Ponzi is off of Scholl%26#39;s Ferry, just a few miles from your place, if they want to stop there. At the bottom of Chehalem Mtn, turn west onto North Valley Rd. There are signs to any number of wineries off N. Valley Rd. Of those that will be open, one of my favorites is Adelsheim.
Stay on N. Valley Rd. until it intersects with NE Ribbon Ridge, then head south. In the short stretch of road before the junction with 240, they%26#39;ll see a sign to Penner Ash. This a new winery sitting on top of the hill with panoramic view north. Very nice.
From there, get onto 240 for the short distance until it junctions with Kuehne Rd., take that to Hendricks on into Carlton. Along the way they%26#39;ll be more signs to more wineries, including Anne Ami.
There are probably a half dozen places in Carlton they can taste. A couple of my favorites there that haven%26#39;t yet been mentioned are Cuneo, next door to Carlton Winemakers Studio, Solena Cellars, and the Tasting Room, in the old rail station there. Buoyed by the wine industry, Carlton has grown into a neat little town with several shops the women might like too. If they want to fit in a meal, I suggest Cuvee, a tiny restaurant in the middle of town, with very good - and expensive - food.
If the ladies make it this far, and you%26#39;re not along as a designated driver, expect a call. A more direct route home would be back to 240 and into Newberg and 99W, where, if there%26#39;s still time, they could stop at Rex Hill and Chehalem.
I knew mistletoe would have some great advice!
Yes, Mtngrl, I knew you two would have the best and most accurate advice..phirl...what will you and your son be doing while the girls are out? lol
Great responses. have sent on to wife at work. we will discuss when she gets home. I do think she may want to avoid Dundee on Sat afternoon. or should say I would.
My wife wanted to do a river cruise on Willamette, but gr-d has said since early on she would like to see wine country. and so did her mother. So that%26#39;s what is happening, My wife will be designated driver. She is not much of a wine person. like me.
frid all are doing Mt Hood and Gorge which is wife%26#39;s plan. so whe was willing to give a little
we have discussed evergreen museum for the boys, but guess we will just stay in Tigard. I enjoy spending lazy day with son and his boys.
We may do Evergreen in two weeks when we head to Depoe Bay for week. d-i-l would like to see that too.
I can definitely see what you mean about Dundee and Saturday afternoons!
Our son went to the Evergreen Aviation Museum about a month ago with a bunch of friends and they had a great time.
Let us know how the day trips go:)
My wife picked up a map of Yamhill County Wineries. Most of those suggested are on that map except Anne Ami. I googled that and found it and it has same address as Chateau Benoit. Does that make sense? .
Well Ponzi not on it since Wash Co.
Penner-Ash did not show on Ribbon Ridge Rd but does in Carlton, but their website shows them on Ribbon Ridge. I called them and they will be open. Looks like a good stop.
I called a few others. Woman at Chehalem was very willing to take appointment. I told her Rex Hill will probably be a stop.
I sent suggestions to d-i-l, She responded they were mostly interested in vineyards, looks like plenty of those among suggestions.
Laurel Hill is along way, and wonder if that is good stop. No one mentioned it.
I will suggest they go into Carlton. I think they will enjoy the small town. and the several tasting rooms. if just to look at.
Thinking I will suggest Rex Hill first then Adelsheim and on to Carlton and return by Ponzi if they are still interested.
Then they may make different plan.
I really appreciate the suggestions. Makes the planning a lot easier. Except for Laurel Hill I am not even looking at the many others
What you%26#39;re seeing makes sense. Anne Ami used to be Chateau Benoit. With the winery at the top of a hill, it%26#39;s a nice stop too, but 3-5 miles off the planned route, I think.
Laurel Ridge, right? (instead of Laurel Hill). I%26#39;ve had a couple of their wines, but never stopped to taste at the winery. No reason not to, though. It%26#39;s just a couple hundred yards off the road. No vineyards around it though.
If DIL is interested in vineyards, she%26#39;ll see plenty at Ponzi, Adelsheim, Penner Ash, Anne Ami, Rex Hill, Chehalem, and I believe there are some around Cuneo and Carlton Winemaker%26#39;s Studio.
Rex Hill is a good first stop, almost the gateway to wine country. Nice building on the hillside looking into Newberg, with beautiful grounds.
