I have read the messages on this board avidly for the last few months, and although I have only asked 2 questions, I was impressed with the information received.
I have now planned our trip from all the information gained as follows:
7 nights accommodation (timeshare) in Seaside
1 night Crater Lake Lodge - reserved
1 night Redding reserved (so we can exlplore Klamath NWR and Mt Shasta on the way)
1 night in North California Redwood area ( don%26#39;t know where, but will take a chance).
1 night Gold Beach (reserved) for the Rogue River boat trip
2 separate nights on the way up the Oregon coast - again we will take a chance
2 nights near the Airport in Portland so that we have a full day to explore the city - not long I know but all we can spare!
We are really looking forward to visiting Oregon and all there is on offer. We just hope it will stay fine, not be too cold and no snow as we are having an Indian Summer here in the UK.
Thank you to all the ';experts'; for their help.
Arriving this Weekend
We%26#39;ve already had snow on Mt Hood, Willamette Pass and Crater Lake, The weekend forcast is looking pretty good, but all bets are off after that. Hope the weather holds for you!!
Have a great time and make sure to give us a trip report upon your return to the UK.
Den
Arriving this WeekendCan I make a suggestion? There isn%26#39;t much near the airport, and so you might consider a hotel in downtown instead. That way you are right in the thick of things to see.
7 nights in Seaside, lucky you! The Trendwest is a gorgeous resort and right in the middle of all the fun, oceanfront too! We spen the majority of the summer in Seaside, loved the coastal living there. If you would like suggestions for great eats in the area, feel free to ask!
You will also be close to Cannon Beach and Astoria. www.seasideor.com is a nice website to acquaint you with Seaside. We enjoyed a nice stay at the Heathman Hotel this summer, it is in downtown Portland. Very nice hotel with an outstanding restaurant. Pittock Mansion, Classical Chinese Gardens, Rose Gardens, Oregon Zoo are all fun attractions in Portland.
Have fun! :)
Looks like a nice itinerary, Angela. You must have been planning this for a long time to have scored a reservation at Crater Lake Lodge. Like Den, I hope the weather holds out for you.
If it%26#39;s storming on your way up the coast, I suggest pushing for pushing for Yachats or Newport area for both nights after Gold Beach. Newport in particular has more to do that%26#39;s less good-weather dependent, and in Yachats, if you%26#39;ve got an ocean front room, I imagine storm-watching would in itself be a great activity.
I also agree with Mtngrl%26#39;s suggestion. It might mean you have to get up 15 - 30 minutes earlier the morning you fly out, but you%26#39;d much more enjoy a stay in downtown Portland than out at PDX.
Have a great trip!
Syrahgirl, if Angela has been reading Oregon forums for the last couple months, she%26#39;s already read everything you wrote here at least 5 times, more likely 10.
2 nights is Portland? definitely stay in town. Any airport hotel will not be as nice as those in town, there is nothing to do there, you will waste time getting back and forth..
Here is a GoList of hotels in town , my favorite is the 5th Ave Suites :)

The Must-Do Things in Portland would be the Japanese Gardens, Portland Art Museum if you like museums, Classical Chinese Gardens

and just hop on a Streetcar

and ride around the city, get off at Powells Books store ( largest book store in US) and have drinks/meals at the many nice places in town..

I will leave the Coast to the locals, we just spent a couple of days at the Coast and it is Cold and Windy even if it is not raining, so bring warm clothes!
Cannon Beach is lovely, we were south of there this trip.
I would recommend the Inn at Arch Cape on the drive back up the Coast..they have kitchens and fireplaces and are very nice and cozy, especially at this time of year.
I worry that 7 day in Seaside will be too much, but at least you can use it as a base while you explore Oregon and the Coast.
Have a wonderful trip~
syrahgirl, you said %26lt; The Trendwest is a gorgeous resort and right in the middle of all the fun, oceanfront too! We spen the majority of the summer in Seaside, loved the coastal living there. If you would like suggestions for great eats in the area, feel free to ask! %26gt;
I thought you were only here in Oregon for about 10 days. I know we would all love to hear more about your stay, did you stay in a house or at a hotel? Were you at the Trendwest? You have not mentioned it before, I am interested in hearing all about it.
Why wait for someone to ask, do go ahead and tell us about where to eat and all about Coastal living!
We were , as you might know, farther north in Arch Cape and Manzanita, how would you compare Seaside and those hotels to Manzanita? Have you been to Manzanita?
Thanks for the info..looking forward to reading more about your summer here in Oregon.
sigh, I meant Arch Cape and Manzanita are South of Seaside LOL....and no, I don%26#39;t know my right from my left either :D
Angela
I remember you. I tried to convince you to go slow down coast Seaside to Crater Lake, but found you were going north on coast.
Did we give you ideas already for week in Seaside?. I seem to remember that. Mt St Helens Ilwaco, etc. If not I am willing to give a few ideas. and sure others too.
Do you plan time for Columbia R Gorge?? I
Hi all,
Thank you all so much - I knew you would all come back with some extra good suggestions, but just to explain about our Portland Airport accommodation decision.
My husband is wary of driving in your cities. On the whole he is relaxed and enjoys driving in the USA (after all there is far less traffic to contend with than on our roads), but finds cities confusing and prefers to not go there!!
This is why I decided on the airport and the Shilo Inn. I thought we could park in the long stay car park at the airport and use public transport to get to Portland (I know it may be a bind).
The second reason is, phirl may remember, I am looking to find the whereabouts of a long deceased relative who emigrated to Portland. I have hit a blank at every turn - Caldwells Colonial proving very unco-operative - so I just have addresses to look up which (according to mapquest) are very near the airport.
The third reason, I am a worrier and would be a nervous wreck if I had to go through city traffic to get to an airport.
I too think Seaside may be a bit much for 7 days from all you have said over the months, but my husband will love it and it will be a touring base. We are hoping to get down as far as Lincoln City and up to Ilwaco - although the thought of that long bridge worries me!! I don%26#39;t think we will manage the Columbia Gorge, but there is an excuse for another visit.
On the way back up the coast as I stated we are doing a Rogue River boat trip which doesn%26#39;t get back til 2.30 so we may not get far from Gold Beach that day, but I had planned on one night in Newport before heading back to Portland. That way I don%26#39;t think we will miss any of the coast. I would love to see a storm whilst we are on the coast.
I booked Crater Lake Lodge quite early on and managed to get the last lake view room - so I hope its not foggy and the snow doesn%26#39;t stop us getting there.
I have tried to plan our route with as little driving as possible as the first day Seaside to Crater Lake is quite a long way. I want my husband to have a restful holiday as much as possible, but at the same time to see a much as we can in the short time we have.
Thank you all once again for your suggestions and if you have any more I look forward to hearing them.
One more thing, will the Portland Saturday market still be on in October
Also will we need snow chains for the car and will they be placed automatically in the car by the rental people or will we need to ask.
I figured you must have some reason to stay near the airport since you said you had already done lots of research, but I just wanted to be sure in case in was something you overlooked. It does make sense to me now:)
Glad you lucked out with Crater Lake Lodge! I have not stayed there, only visited, but the area is so amazing. If there is snow, they plow it to the lodge, so you should be fine.
Yes, the Saturday Market is still open this time of year, on both Saturdays and Sundays.
Have a great trip and let us know how it goes:)
