I am moving from San Diego to WA and stopping in Portland from about 4 pm until 2pm Tues-Wed. I thought that I saw a film once about an old steam engine there? Where should we stay? What should we see? My husband and I are in our early 30%26#39;s we like good(not to fancy) food, old things (cars, trains, antiques, buildings), history, and dive bars! If anyone can help we%26#39;d appreciate your time!
One day visit..what to see...isn't there a historic train?
I don%26#39;t believe that engine is easy to visit, at least last time I was involved with train buffs it was not, 20 years ago,

Here is thought above site shows the several McMenamins sites many in Portland area, The McM brothrs have done an excellent job of renovating old buildings so people can use. Their basic busines is pubs and food, but they have a few hotels Kennedy school and Edgefield are two in Portland area.
I was at Edgefield this past week I had forgotten how many pubs were on the site, 3 or 4. Once TB hospital and poor folks farm and other things, big place 1900s building. It is removed from downtown Portland
Crystal Ball Room is downtown

I think you would enjoy the Heathman Hotel, it is on the National Historic Register. We stayed there last summer and really enjoyed everything about the hotel, including their great restaurant where we had an excellent dinner and Sunday Brunch the next morning.
For dinner in Portland, you may want to check out Jake%26#39;s Crawfish. It is a Portland classic with very good food. The Sellwood area in Portland has antiques that you may enjoy.
Have a great trip! :)
