Hi there, I live in Portland but grew up in Heppner. I visit Heppner each March for the St. Paddy%26#39;s Festival, and I think it would be a great idea if people connected with the Heppner Festival could get Frank McCourt to come to Heppner between 2006 and 2009. I can see him either appearing at the KUMA radio show at the Heppner Elks or as a grand marshal riding in the afternoon parade. Mr. McCourt would also fit in well at the afternoon Ceili at the Elks.
I have a ticket to Frank McCourt%26#39;s appearance in Portland in November , and will try to get word to him by then. There will be a planning meeting September 19 at 4 pm at Heppner%26#39;s City Hall for the 2007 St. Patrick%26#39;s Festival, and I%26#39;ve already sent them my suggestion. If anyone in the Umatilla Co.-Morrow Co. area wants to contact me, my phone # is (503) 282-6300. Perhaps money and logistics need not be obstacles.

Bringing Frank McCourt to Heppner's St. Patrick's FestivalHey that is my home too. more or less
Our family name is on one of the flags that hangs on the street during St Patricks days. 60 or so of us showed up the year we were the honored family. Most traveled less than 60 miles to get there.
I am sure they would find a way to include Frank McCourt.
I go every so often, fun time, mostly seeing old friend and relatives on the street or at events.
More or less plan to go this year. if my cousin offers use of her place again. .
Bringing Frank McCourt to Heppner's St. Patrick's FestivalHi Sally,If Frank cant/wont do it, his younger brother Malachy is also a published author(A Monk Swimming) an actor and an entertaining guest speaker as well. I saw him in Chicago and he had the place in stitches.They both live in New York,so it is a long jaunt to Oregon..All the years I lived there(Oregon),I never even heard of Heppner,and I come from an Irish family..I may have missed a fun time I guess
Do the McCourts have brogues? a brogue always goes over well on St Patricks Day. Most in my generation no longer have the brogue. Occassionally someone from Donegal or Cork will show up and always good to hear the brogues again. I grew up listening to them. Then went to Donegal to visit family still there and they still talk that way
They might see it as a good public relations thing. Heppner has been doing St Patricks Day for many years. Though they took a few years off, 30 or so years ago.
I have a baseball cap that says ';Heppner, Irish Capital of Oregon'; Green of course. Lakeview might argue that.
For anyone who does not know or remember who the McCourt family is...http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/English/angela.html
Good luck! Sally, what a great idea !
Thank you, ScarletO1:)
lol, voyaging, you can just call me Scarlett :)
We used to see Malachy McCourt once in a while when we lived in NYC..
To phirl:
You9 asked about the McCourts and their brogues. I%26#39;ve seen both a movie and videotape (from the library) with both of them, and yes, their brogues are still there. Frank was assigned to teaching in vocational high schools in New York because of his accent, and he tells about this in his latest book, ';Teacher.';
I taught as a long-term substitute teacher in the New York schools in the Sixties.

To kipsmom;
Thanks for replying to me. I have one concern about Frank%26#39;s brother Malachy, and that is about his drinking. If he%26#39;s on the wagon, he%26#39;d be fine a bet to help Heppner celebrate St. Patrick%26#39;s weekend. I%26#39;m afraid he might fall off the wagon and cause some embarrassment.
