Arch Cape/Cannon Beach-a Tiny Trip Report

We decided last minute to try out a new dog kennel and take off for the coast before the weather was just impossible for walking on the beach.

We left the dog in Newburgh and ended up sitting on #26 for about 2 hours, there is roadwork going on..past Camp 18. So if you are driving out to the coast on 26, make a pit stop at Camp 18, that will be your last chance before arriving in Cannon Beach. They are repaving, so you will hit it again, on your return trip.

Cannon Beach is also repaving their roads..( this is still high season, hotels are charging full prices ) but you cannot get on the main street that runs through town.

There were very few people out, we saw one couple walking on the sidewalk by Doogers, many shops were closed .

We went to Mo%26#39;s for some clam chowder and fish sandwiches and a walk on the beach. We ended up being entertained by a man with a headset on and a big elaborate kite that he flew right outside the window at Mo%26#39;s..he seem to be dancing to music while he flew the kite, which danced also, it was fun to watch.

There were very few people on the beach, while it was sunny, it was freezing cold and very windy. No swimmers there!

We then drove to where we would stay the next couple of nights, The Inn at Arch Cape. I got the name from a poster here on TA.

www.innatarchcape.com.

It was charming and perfect for what we needed, they allow dogs and do not allow smoking.

It is about a block from the beach, you can see the ocean as you park your car.

Our room had a tiny tiny kitchen, a very small bathroom and a room with a huge bed and fireplace. It was very cozy, with the wind blowing outside, we were quite happy to snuggle in for the night with a roaring fire. The wood is laid for the fire in the fireplace when you arrive with a basket full, everything you need is there. Including books and games if you get tired of watching the fire..

Arch Cape, or at least that area, was all residential, you have to drive to Manzanita or Cannon Beach if you want shops or restaurants.

We went to Manzanita. We fell in love with Manzanita. We are now looking at real estate in Manzanita lol.

We ended up buying prepared food there, wine and sweets to take back to the Inn...we were tired of driving and just wanted to be inside with that fire.

The next morning we went back to Manzanita for breakfast at their bakery..homemade cinnamon rolls, panini, soup and many salads and dishes that were all very appealing. You can get an amazing picnic or meal there to go...or you can eat it there.

We took many many photos of the Inn and the beach and the breathtaking views from the Lookouts on 101.

So that was our mini-getaway. Pup was not happy with the kennel, but we were very happy with the Inn at Arch Cape and will go back again...with Pup.

Whatever you do, do not forget a camera, this is the Most Photogenic state!!

Arch Cape/Cannon Beach-a Tiny Trip Report

So, I take it you%26#39;re recommending Manzanita? Sounds like a nice time, Scarlett, and thanks for the report. I have many fond memories of summer weeks at Arch Cape. You didn%26#39;t try any skim-boarding, did you? ;-)

Curious why you picked Newburg for kennel, a bit out ot the way to go out on US-26. we keep looking for places to kennel our pooch and Newburg on way to Depoe Bay.

what was wrong with kennel??

We have kenneled her twice in Lincoln City. $16/day. That way we have her at coast for a little. still not sure about picking her up in mid-week for 2 or 3 hours on beach and taking her back

As one time highway engineer, appreciate problems of trying to pave with weather temps dropping.and rain coming

Sounds like a very nice getaway! Yes, that paving on 26 can be a pain. We ran into that this summer as well. Long backups!

No mistletoe, I appreciated the beach, sand and ocean from a nice dry distance. Yes, I do love Manzanita but I don%26#39;t want anyone else to go there, then it will end up like Cannon Beach or Seaside! Keep it nice and small and tasteful :)

Hi phirl!

Believe me, I did not pick Newburgh, I get lost every single time we go there...I have had a terrible time finding a good dog sitter, a kennel was our last resort and for kennels , this guy has a very nice one. But pup has never been kenneled..he cried til he lost his voice :(

So I am back to looking for someone to stay here at my home or we will have to give him anti-depressants and he will stay at the kennel...we are booked to go to Buenos Aires in October !!!

Looking at it from the side of the men working on the road, I understand how these fine days before winter are better for work...but from the motorist who needed to get home, it was annoying..But I managed :) At least I have an entertaining husband, when the driving gets boring , he is good for making me laugh.

Scarlett--Ok...come here...I will drive you around and then you won%26#39;t get lost out here anymore:) I hope you can find someone to come stay with pup at your place. If I could leave my family, I would do it.

Poor pup...he is a sweetie, but not really a pup...more like a human. At least he thinks he is human;) I am sure he was wondering why he was in a place with, ugh, DOGS! ;)

';Yes, I do love Manzanita but I don%26#39;t want anyone else to go there....';

You%26#39;re starting to think like a real Oregonian, Scarlett. ;-)

mistletoe, you could not have said anything nicer :) Thanks!!

Scarlett01,

RE: ';Yes, I do love Manzanita but I don%26#39;t want anyone else to go there....';

I hate to break it to you, but people are going there, both to visit and to live. Growing up, Manzanita was the largest of the Tri-Cities (Manzanita, Nehalem, Wheeler or Manzwheelem) at around 350. Nehalem was 250 and Wheeler 200. Nehalem and Wheeler%26#39;s populations have remained largely unchanged while Manzanita is over 800 now :-( They are currently building houses on lots that were once considered unbuildable.

Glad youy enjoyed you trip and who knows, mabe we%26#39;ll run in to each other on the beach at Manzanita one day. I%26#39;ll be the one with the 85# Golden Retreiver and 8 year old boy. LOL!!!!

LOL, Den, please, don%26#39;t tell me that..I want it to stay the way it was this week..no more people!! I have discovered it now lol...

OK, I will look for you, you can look for someone with a 50# Standard Poodle..

I have heard about some cabins/cottages that are rentals in the summer. My husband and I are considering taking Pup and spending some time out there next year..a nice change of pace from the City.

Anyone with suggestions for rentals, feel free to post them here..I will look things up too :) Thanks~
