Coast Dining

Hi All-

My husband %26amp; I will be renting what looks to be a lovely oceanfront cottage in Yachats in mid-October. We live in far northern CA %26amp; go to Ashland %26amp; Bandon often; well, not as often as I’d like, but still…This is the first time we’ll be staying in rather than just going through the central Coast %26amp; while we love to discover new (to us) restaurants, with only three nights there I’m looking for recommendations. I’ve read all of the recent posts and have a Check It Out list (Leroy’s Blue Whale, Drift Inn, Mo’s, Harbor Light, Beachcomber, Firehouse and Nehalem River Inn) and an Avoid list (Landmark). Anyone have recommendations on or near the Coast from Reedsport to Lincoln City? I don’t want to make it sound like all we do is eat, but a great (or horrible) meal can linger for a long time! Many Thanks...

Coast Dining

Our favorites are scattered all along the coast....in Newport, try ARR Place....they don%26#39;t advertise, its very small, only seat about 20 or 30. They are open Wed-Sat, and its first come first served. The cook is the husband, the waitress is the wife...excellent food, comparable to many Portland restaurants. It%26#39;s in Nye Beach, on third ave, right behind the Performing Arts Center. In Seal Rock, Yuzen has great Japanese food, very fresh sushi, very authentic cuisine.

In Lincoln City we love the Blackfish Cafe, but it has no views (neither does ARR Place). I wish there was a great place on the coast with good views, but as of yet we have yet to find it. We have tried the Bay House (before the change in owners) and while the food was decent, the portions were very small for the price - if I remember correctly, we got 3 shrimp for $26. And the bay view, well, not very pretty.

Kernville Steak House is decent, nice menu, good food, and its on the river. Lots of wild life to watch....there%26#39;s a nesting pair of osprey, we%26#39;ve seen otters and lots of bird life.

We are not buffet people, but stopped off at the Inn at Spanish Head for breakfast on a Sunday morning, and their buffet looked to die for, plus the views are awesome.

And if you happen to be driving on 101, and want one of the most delicious pastries you have ever tasted in your life, stop in little Seal Rock at the Lifesaver Coffee Wagon....its in the parking lot of the wood carver place.....have a cinnamon bun scone (I gain 5 pounds just thinking about those things, and have to wipe off the key board from my drooling) or any of the cheese danishes with fresh fruit. YUM!

And geez, I forgot!! If you%26#39;re in Yachats, def try La Serre.....only open for dinner but quite lovely and even though we%26#39;ve only eaten there twice over the years, the meals were both good!

Have fun, we love the central coast, especially Yachats!!

Wow! pdx, are you professional reviewers or simply followers of food (like us)? Thank you so much for all the details. Judging by your topics, you are much like us – 3 shrimp for $26 indeed! We don’t mind paying, but there must be food there. (I remember when nouvelle cuisine was the rage – one shrimp and garnishes, all artistically arranged – but that’s another story). Views are a lovely plus when dining, but mostly it%26#39;s about the food. The Inn at Spanish Head sounds delightful though, and a Sunday Breakfast buffet might make me break my “stay away from buffets” rule. And pastries – oh yes! I just read my husband your scone and danish description %26amp; his “sweets radar” started buzzing. Any more bakeries?

Ha! more like professional eaters than writers....actually, we live in the Portland area and have had a beach house on the central coast for the past 10 years (which we just sold - one more month of paradise, sigh). We go there quite often, and eat out more than we cook in....so, we hit a lot of restaurants. As far as bakeries go, I usually try to avoid them as I have little to no willpower; however, much further north in Cannon Beach is a fabulous bakery.....I haven%26#39;t been up that far since we bought our beach house, but from what I remember, they made they these HUGE pastry things, I think they were chocolate eclairs, that were just awesome. Those cinnamon bun scones though at Lifesaver%26#39;s, mmmm, they are the best!

Like PDX Traveler we too are part time home owners on the central coast, although we%26#39;ve been there for more than 40 years. And like PDX Traveler we tend to eat out more than we eat in!

I can second the opinion about the Bay House. The previous owner is a neighbor of ours and since she sold it the quality has gone way down and the prices way up. Also, the last time we ate there the service was extremely slow. I do have to disagree about the view though. Our house has a view of the bay, we%26#39;re a little south of the Bay House, and we love it. Lots of herons and bald eagles. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The time to see the real beauty of the bay is at high tide. At low tide t%26#39;s more like a mud flat.

Kernville Steak House is a favorite of ours. Great food, good menu, so-so view.

Inn at Spanish Head%26#39;s Sunday buffet is good. I%26#39;m not much of a buffet goer. I think it comes from living here in Las Vegas! But they do offer cooked to order food at the buffet. We%26#39;ve also taken out of town friends to Spanish Head for dinner, good choices and the view...well, one of the best on the central coast.

Yuzen%26#39;s is a great Japanese restaurant. We were sad when they closed their Lincoln City location and put all of their efforts into the Seal Rock location. No view, but the food is worth the drive.

Kyllo%26#39;s is a hit and miss kind of place. It%26#39;s at the D-River (worst%26#39;s shortest river by the way). The view is awesome, food hit and miss.

Another favorite is Tidal Raves in Depoe Bay. The food, prices, menu choices and the view are second to none. Every table has an ocean view. And if you%26#39;re lucky you can see the whales spouting. Besides the main menu they offer at least two daily specials. Been eating here for many, many years and have never once been disappointed. Tidal Raves is located on the northern end of Depoe Bay and in, my opinion is a not to miss place. You%26#39;ll need reservations for dinner, but it%26#39;s a very casual place.

Happy eating!

Tahiti

Hi there! We spent the majority of the summer at our beach cottage in Seaside, on the northern coast and enjoyed several wonderful meals out!

I%26#39;ll second the Blackfish Cafe in LC, I have a review with photos on the LC Restaurant Review site. Our meal at the Nehalem River Inn was outstanding, we had been there before. I also have a review with photos of our experience there. It%26#39;s one of the finest restaurants on the northern Oregon Coast.

We also enjoyeda nice lunch in Gleneden Beach at the Salishan Lodge, an amazing property with a gorgeous spa I would like to try sometime next visit to the area.

If you make it as far north as Cannon Beach, I would recommend Bistro, Gower St. Bistro, Newman%26#39;s @ 988 and the Wayfarer. Mo%26#39;s is casual and has good seafood with views of Haystack Rock. Cheers and have fun at the coast! :)

Professional eaters – now, if only we could get paid for THAT job. Of course, I’d work for just the food….

It looks like we’ll have a food destination in every town we may visit. Thanks for the reinforcement re: Bay House, TahitiGirl, and the details on Tidal Raves. Husband just let me know that one night he absolutely must have dinner and ocean view together. We’ll certainly eat on the beach in front of our rental, but this is a late anniversary %26amp; week-after-birthday holiday, so eating out is definitely called-for.

syrahgirl – thank you for the details and especially the reminder of the review sections: I always forget about them! I’ll do some reading %26amp; then may have more questions. Hard to wait until October - want to be at the beach now.

La Serre has new owners, I believe, but I%26#39;ve enjoyed several meals there. Across the street, on the east side, is a new coffee house/meals place (cannot recall the name), that might be worth a try. In addition to the coffee shop opposite La Serre, there is another one coupled to a gift shop on an east/west street, about a block west of 101. It%26#39;s a neat gabfest shop depending on the time of day.

We have eaten everywhere mentioned by other posters. We%26#39;ve inquired of motel desk clerks about dining in the area, and they recommended two places in Waldport, to the north. One is a tavern with lively bit of noise, a band and fun, but the food seemed basic, and understandably, tavern. I%26#39;ve heard others say their dishes are quite good. The pizza place was OK, and the tavern%26#39;s burgers were, well, thin and untasty.

PDX. we stopped in Seal Rock determined to get cinamon roll. My wife says there it is, that little drive through place. I said no, it has to be place down highwy they have big cinamon roll sign. so went there. bought and when I asked when did you make these she says we don%26#39;t we buy, I said where she didn%26#39;t know.

My wife is right way too often.

We go in Aug again this time will go to right place.

We eat in at the coast. but have tried Tidal Raves and view alone worth it, and food was good. but Depoe Bay a bit far from Yachats.

Glad to get update on Bay House. has been on our list of places to eat out if we do. It is now off that list.
