We are here in Newport now. got in yesterday. I was quite surprised how warm it was. Our condo has no air cond. and it was quite warm. Not complaining tho. What has me baffled is the humidity levels. I figured being surrounded by water it would be much more humid.
I asked the lady at the front desk at our condo but she was clueless.
why is it that the tropics are so humid (needing NO lotions there) and here.... I don%26#39;t feel any humidity?
The air feels heavier since we come from a much higher elevation but I sure don%26#39;t feel any humidity.
Today we are going crabbing :)
humidity levels??
Normally, our humidity runs below 50%, unless (I%26#39;m stating the obvious here) it%26#39;s raining. The main reason the humidity stays so reasonable is, while we are surrounded by water, the ambient air and water temperatures are low enough that not a lot of evapotraspiration is occuring. In the tropics, this is not the case, thus you have more humid conditions.
Enjoy this rare coastal weather. Change is on it%26#39;s way.

humidity levels??
Good explanation Den.
Hope I can remember that.
Thanx phirl.
All those years of studying fire weather might be paying off ;-0

Forest Service did not train me in fire weather they just sent me to fires, and I uaully got the night shift.
Thanks. That%26#39;s what I figured -- had to have something to do with air temp. Ah well, I guess no good hair days while here - LOL!!!
We walked along the beach and it was VERY cold -- for me anyway.
But it was nice to look at.
Saw some whales out there too :)
Husband is going bottom fishing tomorrow - I%26#39;ll shop!
How great that you saw some whales!
I looked when we were in Manzanita but nuthin :)
Isn%26#39;t it great there though ? Glad you are enjoying the coast.
Hey kukuinut, how was the crabbing?? Ahhhh..... memories of sitting in a boat in Yaquina bay in the middle of winter freezing our butts off... Looking back at it, it%26#39;s amazing what we used to call fun! Might have had something to do with the ';refreshments'; we took along with us, though.
Den, okay I%26#39;m buying the evapotransiration thing. In fact, I know you%26#39;re right. Now, can you tell me why, when it%26#39;s 38 and grey during the winter, it feels comparable to 20 in a drier climate? That one%26#39;s always confused me. Relatively low humidity in summer, but sky high in winter.
we have not been crabbing much since they decided we needed a license. We have not taken our pots since
well we did once. bought one for my wife, but wasn%26#39;t sure how much I could do to help without one. She had to pull the pots in, but i checked for legal.
We didn%26#39;t make the crabbing today. We%26#39;re going tomorrow afternoon off the Newport dock. the drive to Winchester Bay was much further than we thought. And for some reason, my body decided to start getting car sick the older I get!! go figure...
Dramamine knocks me out. I%26#39;m going to go find some ginger candy tomorrow.
We just crab off the docks. I don%26#39;t get in boats.
I love walking around and looking at all the painted wall murals of whales and boats. I like walking down the docks and looking at all the quaint shops and the smell of the ocean and all the fish shops and eating places. Looks like the fog is rolling in now. I LOVE the fog!
mistletoe,
The humidity is not significanly higher in the winter, unless of course it%26#39;s raining, but b/c cold air is denser than warm air, you get the opposite effect. That being, the colder, denser air condenses on your body and air movement causes it to evaporate and cool your body.
