I%26#39;m considering moving to portland for graduate studies. The school is south of town, near Lake Oswego. Can anyone tell me about the area? Also, can someone recommend a decent hotel to stay at when I come and visit? I%26#39;d like to stay near the school so I can scope out my possible future neighborhood. Thanks!
Portland for Grad School?
The area near Lake Oswego is very nice, mostly suburban. We like to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott in Tigard. They have great beds, a swimming pool and a small restaurant. The motel is close to restaurants and there is a Trader Joes on the other side of the freeway for cheap snacks and fruit. Lake Oswego is one of the more expensive areas to live near Portland but there are more affordable options close by.
Portland for Grad School?
Julauf gave a good description of the area. Are you talking about George Fox? My DH is going there for grad school right now. The location you are asking about is where he takes his classes. If that is the case, let me know if you need any more info on it.
I%26#39;m guessing we%26#39;re talking about Lewis %26amp; Clark. Lake Oswego is the most affluent of the Portland burbs, and the school is near the most affluent of Lake O%26#39;s neighborhoods. So you couldn%26#39;t hand-pick a better location in the Portland area.
But there really are no good hotels close by as it%26#39;s mostly residential. The place Julauf suggests is okay, and not too far away. And just down the street from the Trader Joe%26#39;s are another half dozen hotels that would also work: Crowne Plaza, Hilton Garden Inn, Phoenix Inn, Something-or-Other Suites, etc. These places are all right off I-5, near a large office park complex, and serve mostly business travelers.
If you%26#39;ll have a car, I think you%26#39;d much prefer to stay in downtown Portland.
Can you tell me if there are any hotels that two 25 year old possible law students might enjoy in either downtown or Lake Oswego?
Also, will I need a car to get from the airport to lake o? or is public transport good enough? (Does portland have traffic problems like DC?)
Ah... law school...yes Lewis %26amp; Clark. Fun hotels in LO...nope, not really. Think more business meeting style. The only thing I can really think of is in Tualatin, which is only a mile or so down the road, and the Century Hotel. It is still a more business style hotel, but it is on a manmade lake with some restaurants around it. In the hotel is Haydens Lakefront Grill which is pretty popular, and there is a wine bar/restaurant there too (Parallel 45). Otherwise if you are looking for more excitement, you would need to head into downtown Portland. It is only about 10-15 minutes away though, so not bad.
Yes, rent a car. Our public transporation is fine from the airport to to downtown Portland, and out to Hillsboro, but not down to LO. You can do it with buses, but a car would be much better, IMO.
Hey Mtngrl, I believe Boygrypon is asking about a downtown Portland hotel, which I think you%26#39;d agree is better than staying in Tualatin. ;-) But, where in Portland? Hmmm.....
If sleep%26#39;s not too important, have a look at the Jupiter Hotel, an IKEA furnished remodel of a %26#39;40s motel. It%26#39;s right next to Doug Fir, a popular night spot, and reasonably close to mass transit, via which you could get up to Lewis %26amp; Clark (eventually). Also have a look at the Mark Spencer. Both of these recommendations assume you%26#39;re on a student%26#39;s budget. If not, post back. We can come up with something better.
Mistletoe--I think you are right. I guess I should have said in case they want something really close, lol! Portland definitely beats out anything out here in the burbs!
There is a motel in D/T Oswego Lodge. Lakeshore. Fairly easy drive to L%26amp;C a group of us stayed there for 6 week short couse at L%26amp;C, though I left after one night, seemed like waste of govt money since I lived maybe 5 miles further away. But the other 8 from out of town thought it good.
Kind of trendy shopping area near and 3 or 4 pubs. Not like D/T Portland, but may be a bit cheaper. and it is on lake
Our group had some evening gatherings near there, but I went home afterwards. so did another local guy.
Had I lived in John Day at time would have been good place for 6 weeks.
Can I talk you out of going to Lewis and Clark? Seriously!
Downtown hotels for a 25 year old ~ hum. I enjoy the City Center Marriott. Great location, good service, lots of places to eat in the area.
Lake Oswego area ~ I have stayed in the Crowne Plaza. Nice place, lots of eating close.
I am assuming as a college student, budget is an issue. I would recommend staying in the L.O area, as parking costs in Downtown are going to kill you.
Now, back to my original statement~ as someone who is currently applying to law schools ~ you are in the DC area, which I would kill to be in to go to law school!!!!!!! I am scratching my head as to what the pull is for L %26amp; C, unless it has to do with tax or enviormental law. Have you looked at Willamette University%26#39;s Law School? I know that if I stay in Oregon for Law, that it is at the top of my list. Small, beautiful campus, affordable living in the area, and a well rounded legal education~ plus it%26#39;s got a stellar local reputation. Just a thought from one future law student to another ;)
