Portland, how i love thou

Hi the Only M and welcome to the forums! What all did you do on your visit to Portland? :)

Portland, how i love thou

Hi there!

the trip was pretty quick but we managed to fit in a few things.

We went to the ecotrust building, it was closed but we got to go up and see the green-roof and an amazing view of the city.

We stayed in the SW part, at the hostel on hawthorne, so went to some of the cool little shops there, like powell books.

Went to nordstrom rack and bought some very cool and cheap shoes, like the pumas i am presently wearing:%26gt;

we ate at this place in the NE, it was vegan friendly...it had a bocci ball court. very cool.

had some drinks at this cool bar/hotel in the NW as well. it was by a brewery, historic. cant remember the name.

walked around the pearl district. took pictures of the MAX. drank coffee. went to the douglas fir.

the next day we went to seaside which was really beautiful beach-wise, a bit touristy street-wise. and back home through astoria, where we stopped at this balkan restaurant that makes the best bread ever!

hope to do more this trip... the above was a bit of a whirlwind and took place in a span of about 18 hours!

Sounds very nice, were you able to do any sightseeing in Astoria? The Maritime Museum, Flavel House, etc? :)

It%26#39;s nice to see people make the effort to really explore Portland, theOnlyM. I think you might have done more here in your short time than syrahgirl has in years of ';frequent'; visits to our fair city.

Hope you have a good time this weekend. We%26#39;ve got a number of companies in the area now that are building green, both commercial and residential.

its a great city, i cant wait to see more of it this trip.

portland is very highly esteemed for its green-building and urban design strategies. i remember learning about it in university classes and have to say, i wasnt disappointed!

we didnt do anything else in astoria besides eat. it was a mad rush to cross the border and get home Vancouver, BC) in time for work monday morning!

theOnly M, next time plan on spending some time in Astoria, it%26#39;s a great place to slow down and unwind! Would love to visit Vancouver and Victoria sometime! :)

vancouver/victoria very nice to visit...to live there: not so much.

vancouver has ALOT of social problems. i live right downtown and there are about 4 junkies who lives on the street right outside my building. and this is an ok area- there is a banana republic and armani exchange half a block away and several starbucks etc. the situation on East hastings is out of a bad movie. i have travelled quite a bit I have never seen anything like this in any other large city.

its also quite expensive. a room in a shared small condo, with no balcony, not that nice will run you about $800-900/ month downtown. a livable 1 bedroom = $1500/ month.

I guess you%26#39;ve missed the Dateline stories about Portland being a meth and heroin capital. We%26#39;ve got our fair share of social problems, unfortunately and since our tax system is so screwed up (based primarily on income taxes which decrease as need increases), things aren%26#39;t going to get better anytime soon. Multnomah County is looking at a $33 million budget cut in the next year, cutting mental health services, public safety budgets (jail beds %26amp; police), and other vital social service programs. It will be the largest budget cut any local jurisdiction has ever had in the entire U.S. The money simply isn%26#39;t there but the need is growing.

How nice the OnlyM! Glad you enjoyed our town !

I live in the Pearl in one of those ';Green Buildings'; :O)

.. it sounds like you really got to see quite a bit of Portland, and a taste of the Coast, although I guess that taste of Seaside was a big Cheesy? lol

Oh, that was probably Bridgeport Brewery..

We just got back from the Coast..Arch Cape and Manzanita...it is just so beautiful..I hope you come back soon ~

Glad you enjoyed your time here:)

I haven%26#39;t been to Vancouver for a few years, but I enjoyed my time there. We spent almost a week in Victoria a few months ago and loved it!
