Two Days in Cannon Beach

What are the must-do/see things for a two day stay in Cannon Beach?

Two Days in Cannon Beach

Also, what restaurants must we eat at? Would like to have a fabulous lunch and lighter dinner each day.

Two Days in Cannon Beach

Hi Not Enough 4,

This is my list of must sees in Cannon Beach:

1. You can%26#39;t miss seeing Haystack Rock, but don%26#39;t forget to explore the tidepools around its base.

2. Ecola State Park, just north of town, has some of the more spectacular scenery on the coast. Be sure to drive into Indian Beach, and walk to the south end where there are.... more tidepools!

3. Once Upon a Breeze kite shop, just off the inland side of the main street in the center of town. I think it%26#39;s been around for probably 30 years, but I%26#39;m still fascinated every time I go in.

4. The glass-blower%26#39;s shop a few blocks south of the town center across the street from Gower Street Bistro. They create some beautiful stuff in there.

5. If you can pull yourself away from just staring at the ocean, take a drive south to Oswald West State Park and the town of Manzanita. Take the short hike into Short Sands Beach (Oswald West) if the weather%26#39;s nice.

Restaurants.... The ';best'; may only be open for dinner: Newmans@988, Bistro, and Stephanie Inn%26#39;s. What%26#39;s more frustrating to me about these places though, is the limited seafood choices. Heck, you%26#39;re at the beach; you should expect seafood.

Probably my favorite overall is Gower St. Bistro, for lunch or dinner. You MUST have the clam chowder there. It%26#39;s served with clams in the shells, and has a spicy kick. Same is true of their corn chowder if they%26#39;re serving. Next door to Gower St. is the Wayfarer, which has more seafood choices than any place in town. It%26#39;s good for lunch or dinner too. For Cannon Beach%26#39;s version of fast food, try Ecola Restaurant %26amp; Seafood Market. The menu is mostly deep-fried stuff, but it%26#39;s all good.

Hope you enjoy Cannon Beach and wine country.

Mistletoe - Thanks for the quick and thorough response - you have been such a wealth of info for us!

What about places to eat/visit that are within a 1/2-1 hour drive of Cannon Beach?

Also, any suggestions for our trip from PDX to CB? Places we must stop and see or eat?

I would not miss Ecola State Park and Indian Beach. It%26#39;s a great place to relax and shoot some really photos of the coast. There is also Haystack Rock that is an icon in Cannon Beach. Stroll the shops and art galleries downtown. I have reviews with photos of all of these places so you can visualize what they look like.

For great restaurants, I like the Bistro or Newman%26#39;s @ 988 for dinner. Go to the Cannon Beach Restaurant Review section for photos and other opinions to help you make your own decision on what suits you best. The Wayfarer at the Surfsand is also good for dinner, try to get a windwo seat so you will have views of Haystack Rock.

I also like Gower St. Bistro @ the Cannon Beach Hotel, this may by a good choice for your lunch. If you want a real splurge meal, check out the Stephanie Inn for dinner. There are two seatings, reservations are essential. There is a new chef there, Crystal Corbin that I have been reading great things about.

Enjoy Cannon Beach, it%26#39;s a delightful area of the Oregon Coast to spend time in. We were in the area (Seaside) for the majority of the summer and loved the coastal living! Any further questions, feel free to ask. :)

www.cannon-beach.net is a great website for first time visitors! :)

HI again, I would check out the Nehalem River Inn for a great place to eat dinner. www.riverinn.com is the website. We have dined there twice, each time being wonderful.

You could also go into Astoria, about 30 minutes from CB to eat. Lots of yummy places there. In no particular order: The Ship Inn, T. Paul%26#39;s Urban Cafe, Silver Salmon Grille, Cannery Cafe, Fulio%26#39;s (Italian) and the Columbian Cafe are all great choices.

Astoria is full of culture and history. www.oldoregon.com for more info. When are you visiting? If you are in the area on a Sunday, check out the Astoria Sunday Market. My photos in my review will give you an idea of what you find there. Lots of cool eats (clam linguine, grilled oysters, Mexican food) photography of the area and jewelry.

You may also want to check out Oswald West State Park, it%26#39;s a good little walk down to the beach there, we loved the surfing although it was very crowded the day we were there. Fort Stevens State Park is also not to miss, the Wreck of the Peter Iredale makes a cool photo op. Enjoy! :)

There are a couple places you might want to stop on the way, assuming you%26#39;re heading out hwy 26. Camp 18 (at milemarker 18) is an old logging camp converted to museum, complete with restaurant and gift shop. Interesting for a short visit, but I wouldn%26#39;t order more than a piece of pie in the restaurant.

Further down the road you%26#39;ll see signs to the largest sitka spruce in the country, world, or whatever. Quite impressive the first time you see it, at least more so than the world%26#39;s largest ball of string. ;-)

Besides Manzanita and Oswald West, I guess I%26#39;d suggest you head north to Astoria for any more sightseeing. The mouth of the Columbia River is another impressive sight. The best view of it is actually from Cape Disappointment State Park, outside of Ilwaco, WA, about 15 miles NW of Astoria. If you head up there, you get to cross the 4-mile Astoria-Meglar Bridge, also pretty cool. But, you can also see the mouth of the river from Fort Stevens State Park. You%26#39;ll see signs to the park on hwy 101, and once inside head to the South Jetty.

I see that syrahgirl has given you her usual set of restaurant recs. One that she missed, and one of my favorites, is Pacific Way Cafe, in the small town of Gearhart, two miles north of Seaside.

Last thought... If you do head north to Astoria, you can drive on the beach for 5-10 miles, starting at the north end of Gearhart (you%26#39;ll be in a rental, right. ;-)). You%26#39;ll know when you need to get off the beach, and it%26#39;s easy to get back to hwy 101.

If you%26#39;re big on Ethnic food, check out Kim%26#39;s Kitchen in Warrenton for some awesome spare ribs. Seaside is another possibility, just ten minutes away from CB. There is the prom, the gorgeous Necanicum River, the Historic Gilbert District and a small aquarium that is fun. You can feed the seals there. This is a great place to pick up some beachy souvenirs for the folks back home.

Dine at Sam%26#39;s Seaside Cafe, Bigfoot Pub %26amp; Grub ( we were Sun. night regulars for the ribs last summer) and a not to miss new Italian eatery is the Taste of Tuscany. Bon appetit! :)

Whoa!!! Gotta pull in the reins, here! ;-)

Not Enough 4, pick any Seaside thread on this forum, and you%26#39;ll almost certainly read more negatives and positives. It%26#39;s understandable that syrahgirl recommends it as it helps rationalize her having a cottage there, but unless you%26#39;re under 20, it%26#39;s not the place you%26#39;ll want to spend your precious little time at the coast.

I look forward to reading your trip report, especially about any wine discoveries you may make.

Ooops........

That should read that you%26#39;ll find many more negative THAN positive comments written about Seaside on this forum.
