During our visit to Portland next week, it would be wonderful to find the kind of eatery/diner/restaurant that is known for it%26#39;s freshly caught local fish offerings. Not necessarily a fancy restaurant, but things like this are often found in a small unassuming restaurant that might go unnoticed by a passing motorist, but it%26#39;s known by locals as the %26#39;place to go%26#39;.
Where do locals go for fresh seafood dining.
I%26#39;ve lived in or within 10 miles of Portland for the last 30+ years, and honestly don%26#39;t know if we have exactly the kind of place you%26#39;re looking for. But these are what I would suggest......
On the top end, Higgins, Wildwood, and Alberta Street Oyster Bar %26amp; Grill are all know for using fresh, local ingredients. Though none of these is known particularly as a seafood restaurant, all have it on the menu. The one I think comes closest to what you%26#39;re seeking is Alberta Street Oyster, generally because it%26#39;s located in a close-in neighborhood, rather than downtown. After that, Higgins because it%26#39;s more casual than Wildwood.
For more casual and less expensive, check out Newport Bay or McGrath%26#39;s Fish House. Both are chains that originated in Oregon with multiple locations. The most convenient to downtown is the Newport Bay on the water (actually floating) at the south end of downtown.
The place that maybe best meets what you%26#39;re looking for is Dan %26amp; Louis Oyster Bar, which has been around forever. It%26#39;s casual, inexpensive, and a part of Portland history. But I hesitate to recommend it since I haven%26#39;t been in years, and don%26#39;t know if the food%26#39;s very good.
Where do locals go for fresh seafood dining.
Trask was asking for ';Locals'; to respond Syrahgirl,You live in Fresno California dont you?
Even though you live south of Trask%26#39;s San Jose, CA address, syrahgirl, somehow I just knew you%26#39;d show up in a Portland forum thread titled, Where do LOCALS go for fresh seafood dining. Why be so deceiving???
Because you%26#39;re not a local, you probably don%26#39;t know that Harborside is part of the McCormick %26amp; Schmick%26#39;s chain, which has a location not too far from where Trask lives. And Jake%26#39;s is hardly a ';small unassuming...unnoticed...locals %26#39;place to go%26#39;. In fact, it is probably the most often recommended restaurant for visitors to Portland.
Hi Trask,
Aside from Jakes and Jakes Crawfish, there are not that many just seafood places in town..I would agree with mistletoe, a long time local in Portland.
But, most of the restaurants in town have at least a couple/few seafood dishes on their menu..don%26#39;t forget, this is the Land of the Dungeness Crab and Salmon! And don%26#39;t forget Fish and Chips! lol
A new place has opened on SW 12th %26amp; Jefferson , in SW Portland, a block off the streetcar line, West Cafe. They have several seafood dishes on the menu ( which you can see on their website if you want to look them up.)
The Everett Street Bistro has mussels and seafood on the menu all the time, I definitely recommend them!
syarhgirl, you need to visit Oregon again soon.
Hi Trask - welcome to the forum!
We actually do have a lot of the restaurants like you%26#39;re describing, Trask. We just don%26#39;t have ';a place to go for fresh fish'; because every decent restaurant in Portland has fresh fish on the menu. We go to the restaurants with an expectation that the menu will contain these items, rather than finding a nice surprise.
Portland is a town that has jumped by leaps and bounds in dining over the past few years - there are so many great restaurants now, there%26#39;s no way to eat at all of them.
The main places I would actually NOT go for seafood are the seafood places - they are mostly chains like Newport Bay, McCormick %26amp; Schmicks, McGrath%26#39;s, etc (like those mentioned - Harborside, Jake%26#39;s). and have at best spotty quality to the food. You%26#39;ll get much better quality and preparation at one of our many great independently owned restaurants than at any of these.
That said - Newport Bay is a fun place to have happy hour during the summer, being right on the water and all, and I actually have had good food at Harborside, just not consistently.
I swear by the Fishwife on N Lombard.
90% of the good restaurants in this town have the same two distributors for fresh fish, I%26#39;m told.
