America the Beautiful, Oregon the ??

Pretty catchy uh? Our Oregon trip to the coast and beyond. This is our opinion of the Oregon Coast. I hope we do not offend or make anyone mad. First, we went from PDX to Crater Lake the drive along 138 was fantastic. The colors awesome. Crater Lake did not disappoint, rate 4. We stayed at Crater Lake Resort I would give it a 3 out of 5. It was nice. From there we took 62 t0 236 to199. This was some pretty driving, lunch along the road side parks, little town stops.

Brookings, stayed at Loeb State Park in a cabin, rate 3.

Then up101, Brookings to Gold Beach is a must see for the coast. tTo many places to list, stopped at all of them, rate 4.5.

Port Orford there is this place to eat called The Crazy Norwegian%26#39;s Fish and Chips. I am talking tongue slappin GOOD food. I cannot say enough about it. It is my kind of place 5 rate easy. Mind bending I%26#39;m telling ya!

Sunset Bay this was very nice area. It had a garden to walk through and views that are just fantastic, rate 4.

Umpaqua Light House was neat and we had a great guide, rate 3.

Oregon Dunes at Spinreel, they were helpful and we had fun. If you are traveling w/kids it%26#39;s a must, rate 3.8.

Sea lion Caves, tourist trap for us we could of past it, maybe a rate 2.

pdx travels gave us info on agates just north of Seal Rock. This was well worth the stop. We hit the tide just right, it was great. Agate heaven, beach access, walked 3 hours. Sneakers waves, oh ya found out what they are, rate 4.

Devil%26#39;s Punch Bowl, we hit the tide right, a must see, tide pools left us speechless. Seen whales off the coast next to the Bowl, rate 4.8. This was my favorite place.

Tillamook cheese factory touristy, rate 3.

Seaside was nice area, we stayed at Comfort Inn Boardwalk, highly recommend. We check out others in the area they where terrible. Pizza place next to Rocky Mountain Candy Shop was really good. This area had a great feel to it, rate 4. We should have stayed 2 days here.

Ecola was very nice, seen elk, hiked a while with views of light house out from the coast line on a rock. Went down to beach it was outstanding, rate 4.5

Astoria, beside the tower it just did%26#39;nt click for us.

America the Beautiful, I heard it called a her. If that is so then the Oregon Coast is the first daughter and it should be kept as a treasure. We stayed in yurts, cabins, and hotels. Yurts were all but full along the coast. Oregonians are polite, respectful people. Don%26#39;t hesitate to ask questions. Rain of course we had rain and because of this forum we were plenty prepared and did not miss a thing. We had 12 days and it was just mind shattering experience. Thanks to all who helped us plan our vacation. America the Beautiful and Oregon the Magnificent!!

Fantastic report!

Thank you!!

America the Beautiful, Oregon the ??

Glad you enjoyed our great state! Thanks for letting us know how it went. It is always fun to see what visitors think:)

Thanks for the report, it sounds like you covered a lot of ground! I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed the Seaside area, we love spending our summers there. Did you visit the aquarium? :)

Hey Pen,

So glad you found the agates and that the tide was just right. Since selling the house, we%26#39;ve not had the, well, right mind set to return, and you%26#39;re report almost made me misty. Glad you loved it here, and today, and this week, I%26#39;d dub our state, Oregon, the Wet!!

Yeah pdxtravels, but if Oregon wasn%26#39;t the Wet, it%26#39;d be less the Magnificent. ;-)

You didn%26#39;t get too wet though, did you pencar? I like that you rated your stops, and agree with almost all of them, except for Seaside; scratching my head over that one...... And it%26#39;s funny that the only place on the trip that rated a 5 was The Crazy Norwegian. Those must be some good fish and chips to rate higher than Crater Lake! ;-)

Thanks for the report, and I hope you come back soon.

We had 3 days of rain but, we did not miss a beat. We listened to the forum and were prepared. Infact, it was really nice. It%26#39;s all in the mind set, right. It was%26#39;nt hard down pours it was light steady rains. We even went hiking.

We felt that Seaside was a good central location and had plenty to do not far away. We missed the aquarium. Enjoyed the local shops down the shopping street..

Listen to this, We took 3 disposable cameras. The airport told us to buy 400 speed film or lower and we took our own camera with black and white film in it. Our wall pictures at home are blowed up from family vacation pictures. When we returned home the first thing we did is stop and get the pictures developed. Our black and white film did not load right therefore we have no pictures. Our disposal camera did not come out, they said that in that area it is considered low light and 800 speed film should have been used. I contacted airport they said if you have 800 speed film or higher the x-ray machine will ruin it. But, I found out that you can demand a manual inspection. Please pass that info along! So our answer to that problems is that we are just going to make it a priority and return to Oregon. We have been very fortunate in our travels, our motto is no drugs, smoking, or alchohol, then we darn sure desire at least a 2 week vacation anywhere. Seriously, Oregon is just stunning.

For us the weather was cool and sometimes cold. Just a couple light layers was perfect.

Oregonians are the best and most polite drivers I ever saw.

Portland for us was to big of a city, we did go to Washington Park. Now that was nice. I could have stayed a whole day there easy.

Well I have to go fix some wild salmon from up your way. Thanks for everything!

Glad to hear another visitor with good things to say about our beautiful state. That%26#39;s a total bummer about your film!! We brought 5 underwater disposable cameras to Jamaica and demanded that they be hand checked at all 7 security checks we went through while on the trip....it does take some extra time, but it%26#39;s worth it.

We%26#39;ve spent many entire days at Washington Park...it%26#39;s pretty easy to do....especially if you%26#39;re the hiking type.

Thanks for the report!!

Yeah, that%26#39;s too bad about your film. But at least you now have the excuse to get back here soon. And when you do, bring a digital camera with you. No worries then!

And so you might understand why I miss the north coast%26#39;s Ecola Park after we moved from Beaverton west of Portland, south to Jacksonville, Oregon.

At least the Redwoods 2 hours away, make up for it a little. Harris Beach State Park area is nice, but I%26#39;ll take the north beaches and forests any time. We will be back up there eventually.

Yeah, I%26#39;ll give Ecola a 4.5 too, or even a 5 on the best days.

I hike into the woods there, so I see quite a bit more than is seen on the trails.

pencar,

Jealous of your drive to Crater Lake on 138. We haven%26#39;t done it for a while and I was driving it with my husband asleep - typical. It is one of the most gorgeous sections of highway that I know of besides the old highway 30 in the gorge. I%26#39;ll bet you saw all of the fall colors - jealous again. Have in-laws in Port Orford and I was always afraid to try the Crazy Norwegian. Maybe it looked a little too crazy. If we ever go back (I had a little fight with the step-in-law) we will stop there!!
