Bandon Dunes Golf Vacation ?s

My husband is trying to talk me into scheduling our next family vacation at Bandon Dunes in late March 2007. He and his parents would play golf. We have two daughters ages 3 %26amp; 5. What is there to do besides golf? We would fly into Portland and rent a car. Thanks in advance for any information. Gail

There are few places on the planet better than Bandon for a golfing vacation. But (and I can%26#39;t believe I%26#39;m saying this) it%26#39;s not the place for a family vacation, especially in March.

Bandon Dunes Golf Vacation ?s

Bandon is a nice little town. The key word here is ';little';. 1 day, 2 tops, and you%26#39;ve seen all there is to see. Not to put you off on the idea even further, but the weather on the Oregon coast in March can be quite brutal. A ';normal'; day will consist of highs around 50 with variable winds 5-15 mph with higher gusts. Rain can be expected nearly every day as well.

On the bright side, Bandon, IMHO, is a great place to call home base as you explore the south Oregon coast. One of he most scenic areas on the entire coast is 30 minutes south in the area of Port Orford. Coos Bay/North Bend is about 30 minutes north and is an active commercial port area with lots to see and do.

You say the plan is to fly into Portland. Have you considered flying into Eugene (EUG) instead? It may cost a few more dollars, but will save 2 hrs of freeway driving each way. There%26#39;s not a lot to see on I-5 between Portland and Eugene.

Thanks so much for all of the info. It gives me some good places to start with my research. We were thinking of flying in to Portland to allow for a non-stop flight from Chicago -- a real plus when traveling with our girls. I will check out Eugene, too.

I think Bandon Dunes in March is a wonderful family vacation spot. Besides, for all your husband does for you and the kids, he deserves it.

Hmmmm. Me thinks a husband is ';lurking'; around ;-0

LOL Dennis, exactly what came to my mind :)

Now my husband is saying that late March is ideal for whale-watching. Any truth to this? TIA

Fly into Portland?. How many days to get to Bandon? If one suggest you fly onto North Bend, small added cost if you can afford golf at Bandon.

If you have time to enjoy oregon coast in 3 day or so drive to Bandon we can help.

I hope you at least have the car, beaches at Bandon are good if weather is good. But not walking dist from Bandon Dunes.

Yes, each year the last week of March and the last week of December are designated ';Whale Watch Week';.

I thought we%26#39;d have scared you off by now, Gail. ;-)

I don%26#39;t know, I%26#39;m just trying to imagine what you%26#39;ll do with your daughters when your husband and in-laws are playing golf. You can, and everyone does play golf in the rain at Bandon, but even in the best weather, sightseeing and shopping don%26#39;t do much for kids those ages.

When doing your research, consider that everything you might plan to do could be in the kind of weather Dennis cautions about. That said, you are a wonderful wife to consider this trip. :-) If you end up making it, I%26#39;d think you%26#39;ll have some great leverage for future trips. ;-)
