coast drive

My wife and I want to drive from San Francisco up into the Oregon coast. Is Thansgiving a viable season for this? If not, when?

coast drive

Absolutely!! In fact, unless there is flooding along coastal rivers, which could limit your ability to travel hwy 101, it could be a quite spectacular drive.

coast drive

Should be a totally awesome drive.

While still in California, make sure to take the ';Avenue of the Giants'; about an hour or so North of Frisco, also take the ';Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway'; through the Prarie Creek Redwoods...totally awesome!! For a scenic drive, just south of where the ';Newton BD SP'; connects back up with the 101, there%26#39;s a LEFT hand turn that will take you onto ';Coastal Drive / Alder Camp Road'; (maps.google.com/鈥?/a>) . You should totally take this!! It%26#39;ll take you up along the edge of the cliffs for amazing views...there%26#39;s also a picnic area up there that is pretty much my favorite picnic spot along the 101 (maps.google.com/鈥?/a>).

Other than that, just stop at all the waysides, viewpoints and beaches possible....they%26#39;re all nice, we%26#39;ve been to most all of them along the Oregon 101.

If you want some different scenery, plan on driving the coastal route back to SF, rather than up - the reason being that you%26#39;ll be on the West side of the road - closer to the Ocean. Drive home along US-101, through Oregon, and continue down CA-1 in California all the way to SF - don%26#39;t miss the turnoff to Hwy 1, you%26#39;ll miss a lot of great scenery and great towns.

On the way up, do as whiterabbit says - take US-101 from SF through the Sonoma Valley wine country, then up through the Redwood forest. Continue along the Redwood Highway either all the way to Grants Pass, OR or at Crescent City you can head over to the Coast and go up and back. Stop at Klamath and ride the Gondola too - I think it%26#39;s worth it. Just look for the giant Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

Make sure to plan your stops so you%26#39;re not driving at night - the whole point is the scenery, and if you miss it, well - why bother?

Crescent City is a convenient stop, but it%26#39;s pretty much a hole - stops in Eureka, Trinidad, Bandon, Gold Beach or even Brookings are better if you can make them work into your schedule.

I agree with J%26amp;S southbound on coast is better.

Should be a great time- especially if you want to do a drive. Weather could be stormy-which is fun to see. But makes it more difficult if you want to %26#39;stay and play%26#39; at beach. Although weather doesn%26#39;t really stop most people. And who knows- it could be sunny!

I agree going south bound 101 puts you on the ocean side- and of course it will be easier to pull over at sights you want to see, instsead of having to make a left turn.
