Where is a good place to go crabbing and get something?
Hubby is convinced that the best place is Winchester Bay. We just came back from Newport and we tried crabbing there and got nothing. We attempted to drive to Winchester Bay but it was too far a drive and I was getting car sick so we turned around.
Next visit I%26#39;d love to go crabbing again but would like to get something. Last time we were there we didn%26#39;t have to pay for a license to crab off the docks - now you do.
crabbingAs the fall rains come, the crab will be moving out of the bays and into the ocean. Right now, Alsea Bay at Waldport seems to be the hottest with Winchester Bay and the Siuslaw close behind. Talked to my father last night and they limited out on the Nehalem last week but had to work really hard for them.

crabbingthanks for the info. I had no idea that they move out to sea after fall rains. What about in the winter months -- are they all out to sea or would we still be able to find some?
Winter crabbing can be pretty good after the fall molt, it%26#39;s just that the big ocean crabs slowly work there way into the bays as the rain lets up in early summer and the salt level rises. This simply means you may have to work harder to find legal-sized crabs in the winter.

The only place we%26#39;ve been crabbing is on the Columbia around Astoria - got our limit in one drop! The water can get rough sometimes (like when we were out) in the winter particularly, but the crabs were certainly plentiful.
Netarts Bay was pretty good for crabbing- its kind of a cute little bay.
Have you tried clamming as well as crabbing? Its pretty fun too- all you need is a sandy beach, the right tides and of course healthy clams.
I didn%26#39;t like the taste of clams. And I won%26#39;t get in a boat for crabbing. I think that%26#39;s what the one poster did on the Columbia??
ONLY off a dock for me.
Winchester Bay has several designated crabbing docks and many more where crabbing is allowed. Some it is not though so check the signs on the dock. The ones that allow crabbing usually only allow it at the ends. There is one dock out towards the mouth that is the closest to the ocean but is an actual pier and it%26#39;s a long pull but it is a designated crab dock. There is one or two others in the harbor itself. Check the harbor office for which ones. The Salmon are in right now and there are a lot of people in the RV parks fishing and a lot of those throw in crab rings while their fishing so it could be a little slim right now.
Sportsmans cannery has crab rings to rent. They also usually have great cioppino there which makes a great lunch especially if it%26#39;s a cold day. There are signs in town that lead to it. They also have all kinds of fresh fish too if the crabbing is a little slim.
Hope this helps.
Ahh- More clams for me!!! I guess Netarts Bay would have to go out- it doesn%26#39;t really have a dock for crabbing...
If you want to crab from shore, then I%26#39;ve seen lots of people doing that in Newport at the old bayfront. I think you can do it in Garibaldi and Waldport also.
What%26#39;s really fun is to scuba dive and chase them around and grab them with your hands and put them in your goody bag before boiling them on the beach!
