Downtown or Waterfront Hotel

I can see that this is a question that%26#39;s been asked %26amp; answered alot in the past. Patience please while I ask it again with a slant towards my our (wife and I) preferences.

We will be in Portland for 4 days next week, arriving by plane. I%26#39;d like to locate a hotel or Inn in the downtown area or waterfront area, convenient for going out and walking about. The recommendations for the DeLuxe, et al, are nice. They look wonderful, but I sometimes wonder for our simpler tastes of not needing to be spoiled, etc, if there%26#39;s a mid-range type of acceptable hotel or Inn...something like the Hamilton Inns that are nice, clean, continental breakfast offerings, sort of a standard. We don%26#39;t care for room service, wine, valet parking, perks of this sort.

I read alot about the high end places. The others, like Sheraton or Holiday Inn downtown, seem to get poor reviews, so I%26#39;m turned off by that. Does any of my thoughts make sense? Our hotel will be a base, from which we go out each day to find adventures and activities. We won%26#39;t use the hotel swimming pools or spas and treats. We always liked the Hampton Inn style that%26#39;s nice, clean, continental breakfast, but there%26#39;s none of those downtown. It%26#39;s an example though.

If a local expert has a pointer or two, please let your fingers dance on the keyboard for a response. Thanks !!!

Downtown or Waterfront Hotel

The street that runs along the waterfront, actually it is called Naito Parkway, 4 lane road...is being torn up and re-done..huge constructioin site. Noise and dirt and gets in the way of crossing over to the Waterfront Park..and Traffic.

The most convenient hotels are the ones located Right in the Middle of Downtown. You are walking distance of everything, you can get a streetcar easily to other parts of town ( which are also walkable-it is a very walkable easy to get around city)..

I know nothing about Sheratons , the Holiday Inn downtown is a good budget hotel, I hear, but I have no experience with it.

This is a list of some of the best downtown hotels

The List :

Maybe the Mark Spencer Hotel? http://www.markspencer.com/

The Mallory was great, but it%26#39;s now the DeLuxe I guess.

The Silver Cloud Inn is in the Northwest area - it%26#39;s fairly reasonable, and you can ride the streetcar into downtown conveniently.

Other than that, the Marriott downtown or the Hilton are about as middle-of-the-road as it gets downtown - it%26#39;s pretty upscale.

I priced a garden room at the Vintage Plaza - it was $329.00!!!!!!!!

What month did you do a rate search, J%26amp;S?

Regular hotel rooms at the Vintage Plaza without specials are in the $179 range..the Garden Room ( which is a single special room) is more but in Oct, during the week the rate is $270-something.

Calling the hotels directly will get you better rates, if you have points with those hotel chains and if you travel week-days instead of weekends..use AAA or AARP or whatever you can to bring down the price too.

I had been looking (directly with the hotel) for my own use for this weekend.

Oh, weekends are killers, aren%26#39;t they!?

If you want to be in town but not especially in the heart of downtown, look at the Inn@Northrup..it is right on the streetcar line so you can get downtown etc quickly and easily.

Go through the lists and ask them all if they are having a specials...good luck!

Or take a look at the Governor, still very nice, but sort of a second tier hotel. When you mentioned Hamilton Inns, the first thing that came to mind was the Residence Inn at Riverplace. It%26#39;s a bit from the center of downtown, but close to the streetcar. And, it%26#39;s also impacted by the construction Scarlett refers to.

Don%26#39;t be misled by the reviews you%26#39;re reading. Obviously, some hotels here are nicer than others. But we really don%26#39;t have anything like high end hotels in larger US cities. And things like valet parking are not necessarily perks; in some cases, that%26#39;s the only option.

Thanks everyone. You spent alot of time answering my question and now I%26#39;ll pick up the phone and begin the next step of exploring availability and prices.

Good luck Trask, most hotels in town are decent and you will be here in Portland, which is the point :) So I am sure whichever hotel you choose, you will be happy.

Please do let us know , you can tell us all about what you want to do, and where you want to eat, then you can post back and let us know how it all was !

lol...posting here has many obligations :D
