I am planning a road trip down the western coast in January. I am wondering about the weather that I may encounter along the way. snow, etc and the limitations in destinations that I will be able to see secondary to the possible bad weather. I was planning on traveling in part on I-5 and in part down Hwy 101.
Any suggestions or comments?
Thanks,
Jill
Road trip from Seattle to San Francisco in January
Even at that time of year, it would be unusual that you would encounter snow except on I-5 in southern Oregon and northern California, where it might not be only restrictive, but make the road impassable. So I%26#39;d suggest I-5 from Seattle to Kelso/Longview, then over to the coast and Hwy 101 for the rest of the trip. Alternatively (to save time) you could cut over to the coast on hwys 99W/18 from Portland, where you run a small risk of some snow as you cross the coast range. But, you will definitely want to see the Oregon coast from Newport south.
Expect rain on the coast, lots of it. It will obviously impact some activities, but unless it%26#39;s blowing sideways, you shouldn%26#39;t be too restricted as to what you can see. In fact, winter storm-watching at the coast is a favorite activity of some.
