Area around Hilton Towers OK for walking at night?

Hi all. A friend is coming for a long-anticipated visit, and we%26#39;re meeting in Portland. A really nice hotel WITH a hot tub or sauna is a must.

Hilton Portland %26amp; Executive Towers seems to be the hotel that combines the requisite hot tub, the best price, and the most central location for walking to everywhere

Is it an OK area to walk around in in the evening? (SW 6th ave and SW Taylor, a block from SW Broadway).

The other most likely choice is the Silver Cloud, which costs more but has free parking.

Unless you can suggest somewhere else in that price range? ($127/night) That has a hot tub/whirlpool/sauna?

And just in passing -- in case anyone remembers, I posted here in spring looking for recommendations about where to stay and what to do in Portland for my mother%26#39;s 80th b-day. We ended up staying at the Klimpton (worth ithe price for the comfort, pleasure, and easy downtown access) and had a wonderful time. Thanks to everyone who responded, and to those of you who have created lists of where to go and what to do on this forum - you were enormously helpful.

If you%26#39;re putting a premium on location, the Hilton is easily the better of the two. What you can%26#39;t walk to from there, you can easily access via MAX and/or the streetcar. The area around the Hilton is fine. You%26#39;ll see homeless and street kids, particularly around Pioneer Square, but they likely won%26#39;t bother you.

Silver Cloud is at the outer edge of one of Portland%26#39;s trendy shopping and dining districts, but there%26#39;s not much in the immediate area, and it%26#39;s a hike even to the streetcar.

Have a great time!

We stayed at the Heathman last summer, it is not too far from the Hilton. We finished dinner around 10:00 and walked all over, it was fine. I would go with the Hilton, hope you have a great time in Portland! :)

pastrylover ( so am I )...will you be here soon, like over the holidays?

They are putting together the huge Christmas tree that goes in Pioneer Square and there is plenty of security in that area day and night. . with the huge stores, big hotels and holidays festivities, you should not worry at all about walking around in the evenings.

You will only be about 4 blocks from the Streetcar stop also, on 10th, I think the Hilton will be fine for you..much better than the Silver Cloud.

Let us know if you have any more questions, every day the city is wrapped a little more in holiday lights and shops have such great windows!

The Hilton will be fine, especially if the price is right. I live downtown in The Pearl and walk all over the place in the evening. Late night, after 10 or so, I might consider a cab if I were more than a few blocks from home.

So, if you find that you would prefer a cab, remember that it%26#39;s best to call for one about 15 minutes in advance. It%26#39;s not like some cities where you just step out and flag one. Radio Cab and Broadway Cab are reliable choices.

I agree...for someone visiting Portland during the holidays the Hilton is the best choice. The Silver Cloud is very nice, though. They have recently remodeled their interiors. And don%26#39;t worry about walking downtown. It is safe...and a cab ride downtown won%26#39;t cost you much if you are still unsure...or its raining cats and dogs.
