What happened to the Restaurant sticky that used to be at the top of the page?
I%26#39;m again looking to buy gift certificates to nice Portland restaurants for Christmas gifts. The people live in the NW section, near 21st St. I know the Pearl is close by. I want them to be very nice restaurants that they would never splurge on on their own.
I think I want one to be Giorgio%26#39;s (good idea?).
Having trouble what to do about the other one. Don%26#39;t want anyplace old or stuffy (they are young), but they are super foodies and are pretty much comfortable with as upscale and exotic as you can get, they just can%26#39;t afford to go to all the places they would like ;)
Any suggestions for the other place? They have been to Fenouil, Olea, Paley%26#39;s Place, Lucy%26#39;s Table, Serrato, Wildwood and many, many other places.
Anyplace new?
Restaurant suggestions
Bluehour, Park Kitchen, the Heathman, clarklewis are all very good. What a nice gift, I hope you find the perfect place for everyone on your list! :)
Restaurant suggestions
I think Giorgio%26#39;s is a good choice. It was listed in a recent issue of Portland Monthly as one of 15 restaurants in town that are ';changing the way we eat.';
As for the ';other place';, you didn%26#39;t mention Hurley%26#39;s or Carlyle, both in NW Portland, and both in Portland%26#39;s top 10 (or maybe 5). Hurley%26#39;s has a reputation built over a couple years as arguably the best french restaurant in town. Carlyle is more of an up-and-comer. Foodies would enjoy either.
I%26#39;d also suggest Le Pigeon or Alberta St. Oyster Bar %26amp; Grill. They%26#39;re on the other side of the river, and neither has quite the same classical elegance of a Carlyle or Hurley%26#39;s, but both are highly regarded in the ';foodie'; community. Alberta St. Oyster was at the top of that list of 15 in Portland Monthly, and the chef at Le Pigeon was named chef of the year by the Oregonian(?), and written up in a recent issue of Gourmet magazine.
The newest restaurant in the Pearl is 1001 , on Couch and NW 10th..it is a beautiful space, with an upstairs, small tables, large tables and an open kitchen but set up a bit differently from other open kitchen type places.

Giorgios is always a good idea :)
If they have been to many many other places, I am sure they have been to Park Kitchen, clarklewis etc, which are nice but not that exciting after all of these new places that have opened.
syrahgirl, you really have to try some new restaurants on your next trip to Oregon, update that list :)
I agree with Carlyle, also, not ony good but the atmosphere and food are wonderful.
The restaurant that used to be Balvo, that is owned by the Bluehour boys, has been changed..it is at Hoyt and NW 23rd. The word is that the menu has been changed to something more like bluehour and they re-did the interiors. I have not been there, it is nice pretty though..the name is 23 Hoyt.
I will direct you to portlandfood.org where ';foodies'; from the area and some visitors, do nothing but discuss food..they go to most of the openings of new places and have plenty of opinions.
Most of them are genuine , there is an occasional person who posted but was banned for making up reviews, but you might be able to get ideas from there too, or just get a kick out of the discussions.
Good luck, Scarlett
I just topped that restaurant thread for you. But with Scarlett and Mistletoes advice, you may not need that other thread.
Thank you! You%26#39;re right, there are plenty of great suggestions without the old thread, I%26#39;ll be a while reading but I%26#39;ll let you know what I come up with.
Ok, I%26#39;ve decided on Giorgio%26#39;s and 1001 (is that how you say it - Ten-oh-One?) just because it%26#39;s new, and Scarlett said it was a beautiful space, even though they didn%26#39;t have a picture on their website. I don%26#39;t know EVERY place they have ever been, but I%26#39;m pretty sure they have not been to these two. Thanks, everyone.
Great choices!! lol
Yes, Ten O1 is the name and I promise it is nice..it is the corner of the building with the mezzanine upstairs and windows wrapping all around, it is brand new and next door to the new Gerding Theatre .. it is a good gift :)
Giorgios is so beautiful and the food is so good and they take such care of you...they have these white wreathes with tiny lights in all of their windows and the walls are this wonderful Tuscan yellow and when you walk by in the cold and look in, the place just glows..they will be very happy.
Happy Holidays!
