Mt Bachelor

We are new to OR and looking for somewhere great to snowboard with a decent lodge-like place to stay (homie, maybe with a fireplace and nothing too yuppy or new). Heard mt. bachelor is the best skiing close to portland.... Any recs on other ski resorts or places by Mt. Bachelor????

Mt Bachelor

I would agree that Mt. Bachelor is the best skiing close to Portland. There are other options - Hoodoo near Sisters and Timberline on Mt. Hood, but I believe most people consider Mt. Bachelor the best. We do enjoy Hoodoo as it is very family oriented and not quite as big as Bachelor.

At Mt. Bachelor, Inn at the Seventh Mountain is the closest you can stay. You may also consider renting a place at Sunriver.

Mt Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor doesn%26#39;t itself have any lodging but there are some wonderful cottages that can be rented near downtown that you might be interested in - they are listed on the Bend Visitor %26amp; Convention Bureau website at www.visitbend.com under vacation homes %26amp; condos. We rented a cottage from A Bend Cottage Experience several years ago and it was excellent. Another option would be McMenamins Old St Francis School which is in a renovated Catholic school downtown. They have hotel rooms and also have some cotttages for rent. By staying downtown when you%26#39;re not at Mt. Bachelor, you will be able to walk to some excellent restaurants and do some shopping too.

I agree that the snow on Mt. Bachelor is better than Hoodoo and Mt. Hood. It%26#39;s an ';easy'; drive from Bend and Sunriver (don%26#39;t hurry). If a wide variety of restaurants and other attractions are important, I would recommend that you stay somewhere in Bend. Depending on your budget the accomodations vary widely from standard motels to upscale vacation homes.

Have fun and enjoy the powder!

I would ask what level of snowboarder you are and what type of terrain you enjoy? Groomed, rollers, trees, steep, etc.??? Also, are you experienced snow drivers? To come to Bend you have to travel over a pass no matter how you get here, or past Mt Hood.

Being in Portland and new to the area, you%26#39;ll want to check out Mt. Hood Meadows. As soon as the roads to Mt. Hood Meadows are repaired, you won%26#39;t be disappointed with their runs. 8 detachable high-speed lifts will get you up in a hurry with a lot of exploring. Lodging in Hood River will be to your liking as well. Hopefully we%26#39;ll get to get back to ';Meadows'; by mid- Dec.

Thank you all for your posts! I guess we%26#39;ll have to buy some chains before we head up there... we%26#39;ll give this a shot and then head up to mt. hood..
