My wife worked in Newport today so did a mapquest serch for mileage she should claim. They sent her from Tigard through Corvalis and Hwy-20- 130 miles. We went 101 and 18 likely 10 miles less.
Then I wondered about that poor family going from Roseburg to Tu Tu Tum gold beach. The wife and kids found on Bear Camp Road out of Grants Passto Agness, which certainly is not way to go in winter, not all that good in summer. but maybe some other trip search device put them over that route since Tu Tu Tum up river from Gold beach. i checked and mapquest did not.
Mapquest to coast
Isn%26#39;t it amazing that they found them alive? I had given up on them. I sure hope they find the husband/dad alive and ok.
I%26#39;ve gone both routes and I think 18 is much shorter...seemed like it anyway.

A reminder to check with local experts before travelling in winter or summer in the Northwest, or probably anywhere. Some roads look like time savers but may not be a wise travel route. Let%26#39;s all hold hands before crossing the street.
I was worried that family may have gone Bear Camp Road, no place for city people in winter. But sounds like from reports they are survivors who stocked plenty of supplies in vehicle. So glad to hear mother and children were found alive and reasonably well. Wait to hear about husband.
I know there have at least two other winter travelers on that road who did not survive after getting caught in snow.
I have been so worried about that family!! Every day we hear that they are missing and I could not help but start worrying about them too.
I am relieved that the babies are ok and their mom, but I do hope they find the dad soon...
It really isn%26#39;t the best route to travel (Merlin to Gold Beach) even in summer. It%26#39;s mostly a convenience road for people wanting to get onto the Rogue.
You don%26#39;t usually hear good news after families and individuals get stuck in the snow. Amazing that mom and the kids were alive. I am hopeful that they will find James as well. Thankfully we have had some dry weather.
phirl - Interesting thought. That is exactly what the front page of the local paper here in Medford was speculating - that they checked an internet site which suggested Bear Camp Road was the best way to go. Apparently, yahoo and mapquest do not list it, but a few other ones did.
Can%26#39;t lay the blame for this on the internet. An aquaintance in a position to know just told me the family themselves chose that route for its scenic value, even after being warned about traveling non-highways and/or forest roads this time of year, and specifically advised to instead to take 39, 42, or 199.
That would be 38, 42, or 199.
It is a sad outcome for this family. And a reminder to us all to be very careful in winter and to advise our visitors to do the same. Stay on highways whenever possible, double check road passability, and visit the wild portions of the mountains in the warmer months. Winter can be so unpredictable. My heart goes out to the family and friends touched by this tragedy.
This is such a tragedy. So very sad ..
