Portland Visitor

We are flying into Portland on next wed nov 15th and planned on taking a drive out the scenic highway to Multnomah Falls for lunch but wonder how the road is doing with all the weather we are hearing about. We also planned on taking the light rail from the airport area the next day to the Amtrak Station but have to transfer to a bus at Rose Garden(?) when walk a few blocks at 6:30 am to the station. From there we are going to Tacoma on the Cascades and return late afternoon and were goig to reverse the trip back to the airport area.We begin to wonder if that is advisable with this weather.Keep in mind we are from AZ where the word rain is seldom heard. Any good advise from the locals?

Portland Visitor

You should be fine:) Yes, it is raining...but right now there are no problems with the drive along the scenic highway. Just don%26#39;t try to do a loop past there over to Mt. Hood as HWY 35 is washed out. Also, in WA, I don%26#39;t know if Mt. Rainier is on your itinerary, but it is closed due to flooding.

Portland Visitor

The Rose Garden is the arena where the Trail Blazers play. I don%26#39;t know where the bus drops you, but you may not feel comfortable walking the few blocks to the Amtrak Station. There are usually a number of homeless and vagrants in that area, though I doubt any would bother you.

What%26#39;s your reason for staying near the airport? I think you%26#39;d prefer a downtown location. And I assume you have a good reason to go to Tacoma. ;-)

Good catches, mistletoe.

Sorry I did%26#39;nt make things very clear on the light rail transfer. We have to get off the light rail at Rose Quarters tc max station and transfer to a bus which drops us at NW Hoyt and Broadway then we have to walk to the station. We are going to Tacoma mainly for the train ride but we have about 4 hours to look around before the return. We are staing near the Airport just to be different, we normaly stay at the Red Lion at Janzen beach. Thanks again for the advise

Weekend fun things to w/Kids from PDX

I live in Portland for last 6 yrs with my 2 daughter 12 %26amp; 7 and love it here. We couple of close friends were wondering about any ideas for thanskgiving week 2-day trip to go out and stay in a cottage or somewhere fun that kids could enjoy too. Of course Beach options exists, but was wondering about any inland options closer to Portland other than Sunriver,Bend. Any ideas ?

Weekend fun things to w/Kids from PDX

What types of activities does your family enjoy?

Things that come to mind are Mt Hood area, the Gorge, Eugene... but it really depends on what you want to do when you get there! ;)

Weekend fun things to w/Kids from PDX

We%26#39;re looking for just time away from home %26amp; city - taking break not really doing much planned activites but having fun with friends/families in some cozy location. But cross-country skiing or snow shoeing probably could be fun. any ideas on private resorts or log cabins that could be rented ? if we get access to indoor stuff like Tennis, Swimming etc..that would be even better !

upcoming concert at Roseland, where to stay close by???

I am bringing my son to see a concert at the Roseland in about 2 weeks. I was wanting to stay downtown so we could walk around town for coffee and sights in the morning. Any suggestions?? We are on a very limited budget ,so 1 hundred or less for the hotel would be good.

upcoming concert at Roseland, where to stay close by???

$100 or less might be tough to find or enjoy. A little higher might include a stay at The Silver Cloud on NW Thurman or Northrup Station.

upcoming concert at Roseland, where to stay close by???

Inn @ Northrup is a great suggestion. We have not stayed here but the property is in a great neighborhood and looks very nice. The lobby area is very colorful and there is a rooftop area that is nice for relaxing. It is located in the Nob Hill area of Portland where there are plenty of nice coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques.

Have fun in Portland! :)

syrahgirl--You are kidding, right??? Relaxing on the rooftop with the weather we have been having??? Guess you need to come visit and see for yourself:)

LOL, I know Portlanders are not bothered by rain but somehow I cannot imagine anyone enjoying the roof deck at the Inn@Northrup until sometime next June or July :)

There is a Holiday Inn Express over in the NW that has low rates. Or check with pova.com and see what the hotels in town are offering as specials.

Good luck!!

If you need help with where to eat on a budget, be sure to ask, we (I) do enjoy eating out here in Portland :)

LOL Mtngrl and Scarlett.... With the weather we%26#39;ve had lately, that rooftop area may well now be a rooftop pool.

I%26#39;ve never used Priceline, so can%26#39;t advise on the bidding process, but have read of several who have bid less than $100 for a four-star downtown Portland hotel and ended up in the Benson. That%26#39;s a great deal on a nice hote; and the Benson%26#39;s located just a few blocks from the Roseland.

This is really making me laugh:) What is the old saying...par for the course;)

Or in my case, bogey. ;-)

  • We're hungry!

    Good morning from Nob Hill!

Hey, kids. We%26#39;re in Portland and having a wonderful time. Aside from getting some soggy feet yesterday, everything has been perfect.

We%26#39;re heading to the Saturday Market in a little while and I was hoping someone could recommend a good place to have a cheap, greasy breakfast in that area. We%26#39;ll be walking over from the International Hostel on Glisan and 18th, so any place between here and there would be fair game.

Bonus points given for good hashbrowns! Demerits given for bad service and $17 omelettes.

Thanks again for the help. Trip report to follow next week...

    We're hungry!

True Greasy spoon would be on Glisan and 12th..the Byways cafe, I think is the name, next to Cha Cha Cha and across the street from Manzanas.

I think they are best for breakfasts.

Have fun, how great the sun is coming out !

    We're hungry!

Thanks Scarlet! I just asked the girlie at the front desk and she recommended the Byways too. Plus, we get a 10% discount for being hostel members. Greasy hashbrowns, here we come!

    ';Girlie'; Monzie? Oh please...

    Byways. It%26#39;s perfect.

  • heathman or lucy's for dinner on TH?

hi folks, 1st time to oregon and wonder which of these 2 restaurants those familiar w/ both may recommend more? looking for good food, and not too loud so we can hear conversation (our own!) thanks!

heathman or lucy's for dinner on TH?

Kind of depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. The Heathman is a downtown classic hotel restaurant, and more traditional-type setting for a Thanksgiving dinner. You probably wouldn%26#39;t want to show up in jeans. But that wouldn%26#39;t be a problem at Lucy%26#39;s Table, which is located in a funky-trendy NW neighborhood. Lucy%26#39;s is a fairly small space, but should be fine for conversations; no worries about that at Heathman.

As for food, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner doesn%26#39;t allow much room for creativity. Still, I believe you%26#39;re more likely to be surprised - and hopefully pleasantly ;-) - by preparations at Lucy%26#39;s. I suspect the chef their will find some way to a uniquely northwest touch to the meal. Heathman, on the other hand, has more of a reputation to protect and uphold. But, both should be good.

heathman or lucy's for dinner on TH?

We had dinner at the Heathman this summer and really enjoyed it. It was very convenient since we were staying at the hotel. The food was great and the service very good. We were there on a Sat. night and it was pretty loud and boisterous in the dining room.

We also had brunch the next morning at the restaurant and everything was again, very good. Good luck and enjoy your time in Portland! :)

Sometimes Hotels are nice for holiday meals but Portland has some restaurants that do Thanksgiving so well!

My first choice would be the Heathman but if you think you might like to go to a restaurant outside of a hotel, look into Paleys Place . A wonderful way to enjoy a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner ..

    http://www.paleysplace.net/

The Heathman is elegant, great service, good food and awesome dessert.

Bpth the Heathman and Lucy%26#39;s are very nice. I definitely recommend The Heathman fpr breakfast - best eggs benedict in the world. For dinner you might consider Giogrio%26#39;s or Carlyle. My experience is that these two restaurants serve the best food in Portland.

    Sunday at the seashore?

My husband and I are planning a long weekend in Portland (November 8th - 13th) and we were thinking about renting a car early Sunday morning and driving to the coast. We were hoping to spend the day exploring and then spend the night in some motel or B%26amp;B before returning to PDX the following day to catch our flight home at 2:11 pm.

I realize that actual driving times can be deceiving when you%26#39;re just looking at the road atlas, so I%26#39;d appreciate some practical advice.

If we pick up our car in downtown Portland by 9 am and immediately head out of town, how far south on 101 do you think we should go to get a nice taste of the scenery before stopping for the day? We%26#39;d like the chance to do a little beachcombing for a few hours and to have a nice dinner before crashing for the night. And we%26#39;re really not the ';tourist trap'; sort of travelers, so the quieter our final destination, the better. Also, is it safe to assume that we could make it back to the airport in Portland by, say, noon on Monday? What route would you recommend we take for the speediest trip back to the city?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Sunday at the seashore?

Found a great rate at the Surfrider in Depoe Bay for Sunday night, so here%26#39;s what I was thinking:

We leave Portland in the morning and drive to Florence via the I-5, arriving in time for lunch and a quick look around. We then take a leisurely cruise up the 101 to Depoe Bay, stopping to ';ooooh'; and ';aaaaah'; whenever appropriate. After a night at the Surfrider, we%26#39;re up early the next morning and headed back to PDX by the quickest route available....whatever that might be.

Is this a sound plan? What time would we need to leave Depoe Bay to make it to the airport by noon? And what return route would be best?

Naturally, if you have a totally different itinerary to suggest, I%26#39;d be interested to hear from you!

    Sunday at the seashore?

You did well without our suggestions; hwy 101 between Florence and Depot Bay offers lot of ';ooohing and aaaahing'; opportunities.

But you might want to pick up the car on Sat. so you can get an early start on Sun. The drive to Florence is close to four hours. Depot Bay back to Portland is probably somewhere around three.

From downtown Portland to Eugene will take 2-2.5 hrs depending on traffic in the Portland area. From I-5 in Eugene to Florence via Hwy 126 is about 1.5 hrs, maybe a little longer due to construction at the I-5/ Beltline interchange. This is w/o any stops. On a good day I can make it from here to PDX in just over 3 hrs w/o breaking too many laws!!

Florence to Depoe Bay is 1.5 hrs w/o any stops. Trust me, you%26#39;ll be stopping plenty!! The only problem I have with your plan is driving north on Hwy 101 puts you at a bit of a disadvantage as far as having to cross the highway, at sometimes dangerous spots, to get to the better views and attractions. BE CAREFUL!!

    Den

where are you staying in PDX. or better where will you rent and return car?

Agree with opther poster get car day before. so you are in charge of when you leave. not rental place.

I make Depoe Bay to Tigard trip regularly takes two hour most times 30 mins from our house to airport on a good day. I would plan on 3 hours to airport maybe a little less

You may be better to take OR-22 into Salem and catch I-5 north to I-205, a bit longer but you miss Dundee Newberg, Sherwood and Tigard which can take a while on some days

We%26#39;re staying at the International Hostel downtown and planned on renting a car at the Hertz place at 330 SW Pine. Mainly, we were hoping to avoid a parking nightmare on Saturday night by grabbing the car on Sunday morning. Any idea what the on-street parking situation is like around 18th and Glisan? We really don%26#39;t want to spend $20 to stash the car in a ramp overnight.

On Monday, we were going to return the car at the airport, rather that dropping it back downtown and having to take the train to PDX. Our flight back home departs at 2:11pm, as I mentioned in my previous post.

We%26#39;re totally flexible on all of these plans, however, which is why I%26#39;m asking about the best way to go. I haven%26#39;t made any reservations yet but I%26#39;d like to take care of that before we leave home on Wednesday.

Oh, and we don%26#39;t necessarily have to do the Florence - Depoe Bay thing either. We could just as easily head to Cannon Beach and just hang out there for the day. My only concern about that plan was that it would be overly pricey and a bit more touristy that we like. But what the heck do I know? You folks are the experts. And I await your pearls of wisdom....

There is no place on the coast more ';touristy'; than Depoe Bay. It is much smaller than Cannon Beach and Seaside, but just as touristy, mainly due to the HUGE timeshares on the north edge of town.

IMHO, the coast from Newport to Florence has some of the best scenery. This is not to say it%26#39;s not beautiful on the north or south coast. I might suggest you reverse your proposed itinerary and take either hwy 26 to hwy 6 into Tillamook and head south, or probably a better bet, drive I-5 south to Salem, then take hwy 22 to hwy 18 and on to Lincoln City. From there you can toodle south on hwy 101 to Yachats and spend the night at the Adobe, Fireside or Overleaf (all nice but the Overleaf is the nicest). From Yachats it%26#39;s about 40 minutes to Florence, This will put you on the west side of hwy 101 and you won%26#39;t miss as much, plus it%26#39;s TONS safer.

    Den

Thanks for the help, Den. I%26#39;ve booked a room at the Overleaf (with a fireplace, to dry our soggy heineys!) and we%26#39;ll be picking up our car on Saturday (the guy at the hostel assured me that we%26#39;d have no trouble finding a place to park overnight).

Anyone have advice on our return trip to the airport. If we%26#39;re cruising into Portland on the I-5 at around noon on Monday, are we going to be stuck in a traffic jam? How much time should we budget to get from Salem to the airport? And snarly spots in particular that we should watch out for?

Noonish is a great time as far as traffic. Unless there is an accident, it should move pretty well. Coming from Salem to the airport is an easy, straight shot. Just go up I-5 and get off at I-205, and it will take you right to the airport. If it is raining, allow a bit more time since traffic tends to slow a bit with that, but otherwise I would allow about 1 hr 15 minutes from Salem to the airport.

    Monzie,

I think you%26#39;re gonna LOVE the Overleaf. Make sure and walk the Historic 804 Trail right out in front. Look forward to a trip report after you return home.

    Den

Heavy rains, river floods, high tides... better check back here, Monzie, to find out latest conditions. Also, Dept. of Highways.

    To the coast

My wife has a long week-end next week and she was reading the sunday travel section and said let%26#39;s go to tghe coast. and maybe we should try something different,. So we are

After listening to several here talk about Manzanita thats where we are going. I don%26#39;t think I have ever been in the town part, just passed by on 101.

    Is it bike friendly?

If it is a decent day may run up to Ecola.

More later after we get back

    To the coast

    Phirl,

Manzanita is not really bike friendly, but, for the most part, it is pedestrian friendly. The main street (Laneda) has new, wide sidewalks. Most of the side streets area narrow without shoulders.

I%26#39;ll be interested to know how you like Manzanita. We will be returning to our ';family house'; for the New Years weekend with all of our boys and girlfriends. We can hardly wait!!

    Den

    To the coast

    Manzanita if fine.

You might also want to visit Nehalem Bay State Park almost next door.

Not neccessarily to camp, but the beach is nice if the winds in not strong, and there are bike paths all over the place. Day use area to park, both at the end, and near the registration booth.

This page gives an idea of that place...

    http://www.mdvaden.com/nehalem_bay.shtml

Ecola Park is one of my favorite parks to drive through and walk around in, even if I don%26#39;t walk down to the coast.

I%26#39;ve been taking an interest in forest mushrooms, and that started in Ecola State Park. Many images on this page are from Ecola State Park in the autumn / winter...

    http://www.mdvaden.com/album_OregonFung.shtml

I liike Cannon Beach there too.

Do you like biking around the most, or do you spend quite a bit of time in shops and restaurants?

    den

    Thanks for response.

My wife the bike rider, and she may say lets take bike. but will try to suggest she not. She is not serious bike rider,

Last time we went to Depoe Bay we and son%26#39;s family took bikes but she agreed not worth effort. we did take them to Newport which was OK, but not real easy. we had two grandsons riding 9 and 12.

Only place taking bike worth it was Seaside which is very bike friendly

Looking forward to trip. think only other coast paces of any size where we have not spent night is Port Orford and Cannon Beach.

    I will report back.

    phirl,

The bike trail at Nehalem Bay is a little over a mile long and basically flat. Takes you right along the bay and around the airport. The beach from Neah-Kah-Nie Mt to the north jetty at Nehalem Bay State Park is about 6 miles long!!

If you%26#39;re up for a short hike (1/2 mile) stop at Oswald West, 4 miles north of Manzanita, and hike to Short Sands Beach. IMO, the scenery is just as good as Ecola.

    Den

I enjoy that forest walk at Oswald State Park too.

Oswald State Park is a must-see! The short walk down to Short Sands Beach is very scenic and pretty. I have some photos posted here of our visit last summer.

Cannon Beach is a great coastal town to spend time in! Take your wife to Bistro, Gower St. Bistro or the Wayfarer for a nice dinner. Enjoy your trip! :)

I think it is always fun to try new places when travelling. We all have our favorite spots, but it is fun to be more adventurous. Have a great trip!

sheez, I may have to play hopscotch to get to manzanita, had hoped to see new Forestry Center east of Tillamook but OR-6 closed in 4 places and so is 101 at Tillamook

I had also thought to take the OR 53 form US26 to Wheeler and it is closed. 101 closed at Seaside. 101 may be closed near Hebo Down to US-26 to 101 then Cannon Beach. and south to Manzanita. at least today. I will keep watching.

I kind of know how to avoid high water on central coast, but not so on north coast.

Well Phirl, maybe this will make you feel better. Mistletoe is at Bandon, trying to play golf in this weather! I hope it eases up for him, as well as you:)

    Phirl,

Hwy 101 is closed to small vehicles south of Seaside at Beerman Creek and further south at the Necanicum River (the usual spots), but that will not effect you getting to Manzanita. If hwy 26 is open to hwy 101, you have it made. You will head south on hwy 101 at the Cannon Beach jct, just b4 the closure. Unless there are slides, it%26#39;s clear sailing to Manzanita from there.

BTW, there is a ';flood detour'; around Tillamook now, so if hwy 6 opens up, you can make your way north even if hwy 101 is closed. This is an ';offical'; detour and is well marked. You%26#39;ll just need to avoid Nehalem a couple hours b4 and after high tide.

As for hwy 53, there really are not any places that flood, so if it%26#39;s closed, it must be due to slides. ODOT has done a much better job maintaining it since hwy 101 began to slide up on Neah-Kah-Nie Mt some 12 years ago. They get it open as soon as they can. It can be a pretty dangerous drive after dark, so only plan to take this route if you have plenty of daylight.

Don%26#39;t let a little Oregon shower slow ya down!!

    Resort or Spa vacation recommendations

I would like to take a relaxing vacation at a spa or resort in Oregon. Does anyone know of a good one? I want to travel alone and have a nice RELAXING stay at a resort or hot springs.

    Resort or Spa vacation recommendations

What%26#39;s your price range? Are you looking for an all out place, or for something more budget friendly? Do you want to stay in the big city or be more rural? There are a few nice spas in Oregon from Ashland to the Gorge.

    Resort or Spa vacation recommendations

Check out the Salishan Spa %26amp; Golf Resort in Gleneden Beach. www.salishan.com They just opened a newly remodeled spa last month. Haven%26#39;t been here myself yet, but maybe someone who has could review. Looks like a place I may have to check out in the future! Good Luck and enjoy your trip. :)

I would check out the Sage Spring Spa in Sunriver, OR. It%26#39;s wonderful! Check out www.sunriver-resort.com and there is a link to the spa there. They opened a few years ago.

I would nix Salishan. I have stayed there in the past several times and it was nice, but it is way past its prime now.

Now the Sage Springs Spa I definitely agree with! I was just there again last week. I go at least once a year with girlfriends for a week long spa trip, and then again at various times throughout the year. The SunRiver Resort is bustling in the summer, so if you want quiet and relaxing, so in the fall or spring. The River Lodge rooms are absolutely beautiful and would be a perfect way to relax and pamper yourself. If you have any questions about this spa, just ask.

Not that it matters but Salishan was past it%26#39;s prime but is now under new ownership and managment that is fully commited to restoring the property to it%26#39;s original beauty. Not to mention many new additions, such as the spa.

  • nonstop rain?

    Hi, Folks,

My daughter and I will move to Portland in 3 weeks! My fiance and our cats will have to wait here in Napa until he finds a job up there... Anyhow, here%26#39;s a dumb but sincere question: does it really rain for 6 months nonstop? Do you personally know folks who have left Portland solely because of the weather?

    Thanks very much,

    Celle

    nonstop rain?

According to NOAA, the average annual rainfall for Portland over the past 20 years is slightly less than 40'; (measured at PDX I would guess). Now, 40'; on a tape measure is a lot, but where I live, we average, for the same period, nearly 73'; and it does not rain ';non-stop'; for 6 months.

Basically, from late October through early June, it can, and does rain. Sometimes, like the stretch we are in now, it can rain for weeks on end with few breaks, but not for 6 months!

    Den

    nonstop rain?

    Den,

Thank you. ';Weeks'; we can definitely handle; ';months'; was a worry.

Now to take a deep breath and give my notice at work...

    -Celle

Listen to Den about the rain:)

I have met a few people who have left because of the weather, but it was more about the grey than the rain.

Course the way the rain was coming down on Saturday, that might scare some people off. We were at our college homecoming football game and many people were wearing waders, lol!

Welcome to Oregon! Hope you love it here as much as we do.

Celle, this morning it was NOT raining, it was 67 and very overcast with strong breezes, or some would call them winds. Now at noon it is pouring. As long as you do not have an outdoor job you will be fine!

I take it you found a place....my best advice so far as a recent CA transplant is to pay attention to the traffic. I had to drive to Hillsboro and back to Tigard twice last week and both times I got stuck in hecka nasty traffic on 217 in the middle of the day.

    I can%26#39;t remember last time I got on 217. what a mess.

we did have two in our 50 home neighborhood who came from Cal stayed a couple of years, sold home and went back. Not sure of their reasons, but as Mtngrl says for most it is the grey. which can last for many weeks. even though it may not rain.

Hope you are not here now you might turn around and head back to Cal. One of our occasional bad ones which brings flood stage streams in several places.

For sure I have learned in Oreg do not buy low elevation property that might be in or near flood plain. And also don%26#39;t buy steep slope property unless you know it is stable land.

    phirl--Very wise words regarding homes!

And don%26#39;t buy ocean view property. I watched again on the news where homes near Salishan are losing their yards with the ocean storms and will likely fall into the ocean within the week. As far as moving to Portland, just don%26#39;t live on a creek. Anyway, as yet another former Californian, I would say again that it is not the rain but the gray and chilled to the bone feeling we all get in the middle of winter. I was used to the Bay Area and Chico area where even in the late fall and winter, one can see beautiful blue skies unless it is raining. We just don%26#39;t have that here. Really the best way to cope is to either start of continue to exercise, indoors if necessary, and make friends with neighbors or through church or civic activities. So even if it is crummy outside, you%26#39;ll have something to look forward to. I have known a few southern Cal folks to move back due to the weather. We have fantasized about moving there until the home prices doubled and tripled. I did actually like the warm weather we had today until it started pouring again.

No worries, I have seen much worse rain in Chico - last season we got 37 inches...the long drawn out gray weather may be hard to take but I am determined to do my best to deal with that. My husband refuses to complain about the weather (';you can%26#39;t do anything about it anyway';). I realize that parts of CA are dryer and sunnier and would make a harder transition, but Celle is coming from Napa right? She knows all about rivers flooding and mudslides!

Boy what a mess!!! I hope that all of the regulars on here are ok! How bad is the flooding in Florence Den?

I just got off the phone with my neighbor in Gleneden Beach to see what the damage is. Mention of houses in Salishan scared me! It%26#39;s high tide right now and she has a view across the Siletz Bay to the Salishan spit. She said there are so many logs floating down the river and into the bay that in places the logs are so thick they look like islands, except that they are floating. The water from the bay is now splashing over road. Our street can handle a ten foot tide before we start to flood. So far no flooding. However one neighbor has lost a deck and another may lose their home.

She also told me that two houses in Depoe Bay are about to disappear. I%26#39;m wondering if they are up on the hill above the town, she wasn%26#39;t sure. Plus a friend of hers, also in Gleneden, is watching her brand new home slide down the cliff and into the ocean. 35% of the cliff she built on is gone and it looks like her house is going to fall within the next few days, despite all the efforts to fill in the land. Apparently this is the house that has been on the news in Portland recently.

Owning property on the coast is indeed a gamble. I%26#39;ve always wondered how long homes built on the sandstone cliffs will remain standing. I%26#39;m counting my blessings that the only damage to my home so far is that the lawn furniture has been scattered about and a few plants have been knocked over.

My heart goes out to everyone in Oregon right now.

    Tahiti

    Tahitigirl/all,

The rains have let up. There was 6%26#39; of water over hwy 126 east of Florence at high tide (not unusual). Overall, we%26#39;ve faired pretty well primarily because we are not suffering the accumlative effects of weeks or months of this type of weather. If it keeps up, we could be in for trouble. Overall damage is light throught the central coast. There is a slide at mp 174 on hwy 101 and another at mp 17 on hwy 126w. Sunset Bay State Park west of Coos Bay has been closed due to flooding, again, not unusual.

We (State Parks) have issued two emergency rip-rap permits for homeowners to protect their property along the ocean shores. One was at Gleneden Beach, the other on the north coast. Again, if this keeps up for long, there may be others out there looking to protect their property from falling into the Pacific.

My mom and dad are finally making it to Oregon and we are going to spend 2 1/2 days in the Portland area. I am picking them up in the am from PDX and I know they will want to eat ASAP. I was wondering if there are any recommendations for good breakfast places between PDX and downtown. I would like to eat sooner rather than later since my mom wants to try Jake%26#39;s and I thought we could try for an early dinner there after doing some shopping downtown. We will also have my 2-year old who has pretty good restaurant manners but family friendly is the best.

Also, we are actually staying at the Hilton in Lake Oswego because we will be spending some time in the Tigard/Beaverton area. Any suggestions for food around there or should we stick to downtown. They enjoy trying new different things but to get an idea of what they like some of the chains they go to are Claim Jumper, Mimi%26#39;s, Macaroni Grill. We also love Japanese food (not just sushi) and New York style deli%26#39;s.

Would love if if anyone could make any suggestions.

    Restaurant Suggestions

Very close to the hotel in Lake Oswego is the shopping area of Bridgeport Village, complete with several restaurants that from what you describe, would fit the bill. There is a Macaroni Grill there, as well as a California Pizza Kitchen, PF Changs, McCormick %26amp; Schmicks Grill, and quite a few smaller places. Their website is www.bridgeport-village.com, so go check that out and see what sounds good. Also right there is a Whole Foods that will open this week, so you could do some great food shopping there, or good take away food.

    Restaurant Suggestions

Thanks Mtngrl. My dad will love that they have a Tommy Bahama and I%26#39;m thrilled they have a Container Store. The menu for the Japanese restaurant looks interesting as well. I really need to try to get to Portland more often.

The Japanese restaurant in Bridgeport is called Sinju; there%26#39;s one downtown in the Pear as well. We%26#39;ve been a couple times; I think it%26#39;s one of the better ones in Portland, for sushi and other Japanese fare. Almost next door to the Hilton is a Stanford%26#39;s, part of the Pacific Coast Restaurants chain. Not gourmet food, but they do a nice job with seafood in particular, and your parents would probably think it pretty upscale.

PDX to downtown is only 15 minutes, so you don%26#39;t really need to find a breakfast spot between. And in Portland, I%26#39;d suggest Mother%26#39;s Bistro on Stark and 2nd(?) downtown. Great food!

Good restaurants of any kind are hard to come by in the PDX (airport) area, but I%26#39;ve been told that the Shilo Inn on Airport Way has good Sunday Brunch. There are actually a couple of places at the airport itself that are probably better than most of the places around it, believe it or not. A couple decent places for breakfast there are Columbia Grill and the Rose City Cafe.

There are also the usual cast of chain characters like Elmer%26#39;s, IHOP, Shari%26#39;s and the like that do breakfast over there. There is also a Village Inn just off I-205 at Mall 205 - I%26#39;ve not been there, but I would imagine it%26#39;s comparable. For actually good breakfast, you might as well just stop downtown - it%26#39;s right on the way to Lake Oswego, and only about 15 minutes from PDX. If you do, Mother%26#39;s Bistro is right off the freeway - quite convenient and good food.

Another Japanese place in the area you%26#39;re staying is Benihana%26#39;s at Washington Square. It%26#39;s part of the national chain. There are decent places to eat down there, if not as fashionable as downtown. Some ideas include: McCormick%26#39;s Fish House on Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, just off 217, Pho Van Vietnamese (also on BHH), Swagat Indian Restaurant, and Typhoon Thai Food.

More trendy places are found in Lake Oswego including Clarke%26#39;s Restaurant, Genia%26#39;s, FiveSpice, Zeppo, and Riccardo%26#39;s.

Also in the Washington Square Mall (Tigard) is the Cheesecake Factory. It is very family friendly and has really yummy desserts! Enjoy your time in Portland! :)

Thanks you guys. Those are all great suggestions. I will print this thread to take with me. I think we will just head downtown to eat. I have heard of Mother%26#39;s and wanted to try it. I may be late picking them up anyway as I%26#39;ll have to leave by 7 a.m. so I%26#39;ll have them wait for me at Coffee People or Starbucks and they can snack until I get there.

We are getting a PF Changs down here in Eugene. I%26#39;ve never been there but heard good things about them.

Yukira--Yes, Mother%26#39;s is great. They are closed on Mondays, so if that is the day you are picking them up, try another place that is only a block away from Mother%26#39;s...Lorn %26amp; Dotties. Very good breakfasts!

PF Chang%26#39;s is really good. We like the Lettuce Wraps there and the Oolong Marinated SEa Bass. They also do a really good noodle dish with garlic there. Don%26#39;t miss the Banana Spring Rolls for dessert. :)

Apparently PF Changs can vary quite a bit. Scarlett has been to both the Pearl location in Portland as well as Bridgeport Village. I have only been to Bridgeport. We both agree that Bridgeport is awful!!! She said the Pearl location is much better.

Syrahgirl--If you like lettuce wraps, you must visit Henry%26#39;s on your next trip here. It beats the heck out of PF Changs.

I too would advise against PF Chang%26#39;s at Bridgeport. A work associate and I were there a couple weeks ago, and he complained that his meal was practically inedible. Mine was okay, but based on that experience and another my wife and I had there this past summer, the Bridgeport restaurant is pretty hit and miss.

If any of you are into wine, there%26#39;s a new wine bar with small plates that opened up recently (in Bridgeport) called Split. I%26#39;ve only been once, but will be going back. The wine%26#39;s the thing at Split, but it%26#39;s not a bad spot for a light meal either.

  • Thanksgiving Dinner in Coos Bay

My family is traveling to Coos Bay for the Thanksgiving Holiday and I%26#39;m trying to pick a restaurant to have dinner at. Few of the restaurants have websites so it%26#39;s hard to figure out what they%26#39;re like. We%26#39;re looking for traditional Turkey Day fare. Thanks!!

    Thanksgiving Dinner in Coos Bay

Don%26#39;t know who is open for the holiday but if Benetti%26#39;s is open I%26#39;m sure Joe would probably put on a really good dinner. It%26#39;s an Italian resturaunt but always the best food. There is a phone # on the website and you could call and check. And if he is open I would get reservations very early.

    http://www.benettis.com/

Be sure to get out to Shore Acres for the Christmas lights. It%26#39;s beautiful. They start Thanksgiving Day.

I heard an add today on the radio that the Mill Casino is having Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey and all the fixin%26#39;s it said.

    Best Eugene Hotel

Does anyone have any suggestions for a great place to stay in Eugene or near there? My husband is going to be fishing all day and I was wondering if there was any great shopping in the area or anywhere special to sightsee? Thanks Jodie

    Best Eugene Hotel

I thought you were in a hurry to get south. I agree with other poster turn inland at Florence if Eugene a destination

    Best Eugene Hotel

Valley River Inn is probaly the best in terms of location (downtown right on the Willamette River), service, and proximity to 1-5. There are many cheaper but none nicer in the Eugene/Springfiled area IMHO.

    Den

By ';downtown'; I meant next to Valley River Center, the largest mall in the area.

    Den

I agree Valley River Inn best place to stay in Eugene, if you can afford it. with husband fishing all day that should not be a problem.

Thanks so much for the info. I called that place and what a nice place but they are booked because of two convention groups and two wedding parties. We decided to stay at the Holiday Farm Resort on the McKenzie River, perfect for a fisherman and his family. Thanks, Jodie

The Downtown Motel on 7th and Lawrence- the cleanest, nicest, least expensive... park right outside room, brand new big TV and appliances AND continental breakfast. Also weekly rates. This was the original Motel in Eugene in the 50%26#39;s- has a homey cottage feel.

The Eugene Hilton and Convention center is another nice place to stay. It%26#39;s also close to a shopping district and has nice accomodations.

The Phoenix Inn is excellent!! The staff is super helpful and friendly and they have nice spacious clean rooms. Breakfast in the morning at waffles, eggs, sauges . .ummm. You get complimentary bottles of water in the rooms and free local calls unlike alot of the other hotels in Eugene. Book in advance, they are very busy!

We enjoyed the Cambell House Inn (a B%26amp;B plus they serve dinner). It%26#39;s in walking distance to some very nice restaurants %26amp; boutique shops

    Southern Oregon Rain

Does it rain as much in Southern Oregon as it does in Portland?

    Southern Oregon Rain

Not even close. It is much drier and desert like. look at weatherunderground or weather.com for stats on actual amts for specific towns.

    Southern Oregon Rain

Pretty dry but which city are you thinking of ? Medford can be socked in with thick fog for a month or so which is worse than rain. Ashland is above the fog line as is Grants Pass. Ashland gets a tad more snow if they get any at all.

Not sure yet what areas are of interest. What cities in Southern Oregon would you say are good for young families and have proximity to top notch health care, excellent schools and modern amenities.

Medford and Ashland would likely have the best schools. There are smaller towns around each of the cities that aren%26#39;t too bad but you would want to make sure your kids could go to school in one of those cities. I would say that Ashland is a far more liberal town due to its emphasis on the arts. Medford is more focused on industry. Some might prefer living in Medford and getting there culture in Ashland. And some might prefer to live in Ashland and work in Medford. Some other places are Jacksonville, Phoenix, Talent. Grants Pass is okay if your family likes river activities but it may be more retirement and vacation focused.

We live here in Medford with our two kids ages 11 and 14. We have lived here for 12 years and really love it. It is a great place to raise kids! We have excellent health care, good schools (excellent might be pushing it, but that is everywhere in Oregon; our kids do public school for elementary and then an excellent private school for junior high and high school).

I agree with what Julauf said about the difference between Ashland and Medford (theses are the 2 major cities - aside from Grants Pass which is about 30 min. from Medford). Ashland is VERY liberal due to the arts and Southern Oregon University, but also has the best restaurants!! Medford is more conservative, has the better hospitals and more commerce.

Jacksonville is a wonderful old historic town. It has become a popular place for families to live.

Lastly, the weather in southern Oregon is much better than in Portland. Can be cold in the winter but much more sunny and not as much rain. Yes, we do get fog - although not for a whole month, and it usually is in the morning and in the evenng, but it can be a problem when you are trying to fly out of town.

I am happy to answer any more specific questions you may have if you are considering moving here. You can also e-mail me at family4travels@yahoo.com.

Actually, yes, it can rain in Southern Oregon as much as Portland, but that depends on where in southern Oregon.

See this page of mine, which shows a few towns near us - THE RAINFALL TABLES ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE ...

    http://www.mdvaden.com/applegate_valley.shtml

I%26#39;m in Ruch with a Jacksonville address, in Applegate Valley.

We get 27 inches per year. But Williams about 20 minutes west, gets 33 inches, which is nearly at the Portland area%26#39;s 36 inches.

The southern coast near Brookings, gets double that, at least.

In southern Oregon, you can pick the rainfall that you like. Either a little, or a lot.

Medford and Ashland are both at 19 inches.

So 30 minutes of drive moves you from a 19 inch zone to a 33 inch zone.

    Almost forgot.

If you check climate tables for temperature and rain, you will notice that the average winter temperatures for the Medford area, are within a few degrees of Portland%26#39;s average.

And, it really doesn%26#39;t rain that much in Portland. The wetness / mistiness is frequent, but there can be quite a few clear days in winter, when it%26#39;s cold and dry.

Why don%26#39;t you research Newberg, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Banks, North Plains.

I was in Beaverton by Portland since 1963, and those suburbs would be in my top choices if I was to be there with kids.

We won%26#39;t relocate with children, so we%26#39;ll probably consider the north coast, Vernonia, Banks, Beaverton, North Plains.

Maybe even the tiny community of Timber near Banks.

    Oceanfront lodging in Seaside

We are looking for a 2/2 oceanfront condo for April 2007. We%26#39;ve stayed at #403 Promenade Condo before and ABSOLUTELY loved it, but the price has increased so much that we can%26#39;t afford it. ($205/night in April). We%26#39;ve stayed at the Tides by The Sea and were pleased with it and the price was great, but the location is a little bit too far south for us. Can anyone recommend something affordable and oceanfront, or does $205/night sound reasonable? We really prefer to stay at Seaside as opposed to Cannon Beach, Lincoln City. We really need oceanfront because we%26#39;re taking my husband%26#39;s grandmother and while we are out doing things, she will be staying in the condo and watching the ocean (and people watching).

    Thanks.

    Oceanfront lodging in Seaside

Do you want to stay by the Turnaround or at the other end of the prom? We also enjoyed a very nice stay at the Tides last June for 4 nights. The location was great for us for our surfing needs.

You may want to check out the Inn of the Four Winds. IIt is not a condo tho. It has received good reviews from others who have stayed there. You may also want to check out the Resort @ Seaside, it is located right at the Turnaround. ';_

    Oceanfront lodging in Seaside

Unfortunately, $205 for a 2/2 oceanfront condo is probably not out of line. I think they%26#39;re getting close to those prices at Inn of the Four Winds, and that%26#39;s just for a hotel room, albeit one of the nicer ones in Seaside.

Thanks for the replies. I have continued searching and did find a 2/2 close to the Turnaround for $160/night plus cleaning fee. I think this is a great rate considering it%26#39;s oceanfront and a 2/2!!

arkansasgirl, for what it is worth, I live in Portland but I am a newbie and mistletoe as well as the other Local Experts in Oregon/Portland have helped me greatly with all my question regarding the coast and elsewhere in the state. You are in good hands taking his and their advice..

syrahgirl, why would you stay in a hotel if you really own a place in Seaside?

That is a great rate, arkansasgirl! I hope you enjoy your stay and have a great time at the coast. If you want a nice Italian meal, the Taste of Tuscany is very good. Happy travels! :)

What%26#39;s the name of the place, arkansasgirl? And please report back after your trip. From the lack of responses on this thread, it%26#39;s clear that we regular Oregon forums posters don%26#39;t know much about lodging in Seaside. With stays in two different places, you could well become the expert! ;-)

It%26#39;s at the Promenade. I think the link is www.oceanside1.com. Hopefully, that%26#39;s right. I had to do some digging to find it, though.

I think more people that post here stay in Cannon Beach and south than Seaside, no? Judging from the responses and all.

They look nice, arkansasgirl! Staying by the Prom will provide your husband%26#39;s grandmother with lots of people watching and activity! You may want to pick up the December issue of Oregon Coast magazine, Seaside is featured on the cover and there is a nice article titled ';Fun in the Sun'; on Seaside. Enjoy! :)

syrahgirl--I saw that magazine at the store this morning and laughed. Fun in the sun...when it is almost December??? LOL! Not here in Oregon!

  • Seattle to San Francisco

Am beginning to plan a car trip with wife and 11 year old from Seattle to San Francisco. Want to see some unique Oregon sights and stay and eat at unique places along the way. Want a memorable trip. We like everything from great natural scenery and hiking, to urban life and great restaurants. Will take a few days to make the trip. Not sure where to begin in the planning. Any advice appreciated. Am architecture and history buff. We are urban dwellers who are also backpackers and hikers. My daughter likes the theater.

    Seattle to San Francisco

Before responding, a few questions for you. When is your trip? How long is ';... a few days...'; How flexible can you be with time? You want to see some ';... unique Oregon sights... ';. Have you been here before and looking for something different? There is so much of interest to see for all the three of you, your responses will matter. Thanks.

    Seattle to San Francisco

This would be more than ';a few days';, but I%26#39;d suggest I-5 from Seattle to Kelso, cross the Columbia River at Longview onto hwy 30 to Astoria, down the entire Oregon coast on hwy 101 to Crescent City, CA, back into Oregon on hwy 199, then south again to San Francisco. Among the MANY sights/activities within reach along this route, you might consider: Mts. Rainier and St. Helens, Cape Disappointment St. Park (at the mouth of Columbia River - Lewis %26amp; Clark history here), dune buggy ride on Oregon Dunes, jetboat ride up the Rogue River, hiking in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Crater Lake, the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, and Napa and/or Sonoma Valley wine country.

How much time do you have? ;-) And what time of year?

It will really help to know how many a %26#39;few days%26#39; is. I know it is hard to figure when you are just starting to plan a trip, but there are so many things to see here-especially if this is your first trip. It sounds like you like to do everything-so here are my suggestions and ideas for %26#39;favorite places%26#39; in Oregon near your route.

Coast- Great all the way from Wash-Calf. Hiking, scenery to keep you occupied for weeks! :) Fort Clatsop/Fort Stevens near Astoria are historical interesting. I think the coastal bridges are architectural beautiful-look these up if interested. Keep in mind that -if time is an issue-the farther south on Hwy 101 you go the longer it takes to get back(highways going east/west get longer and windier) to I-5 from Hwy 101. I hope that makes sense?

Crater Lake/Diamond Lake- I really like this highway loop on the N. Umpqua River down through the Rogue River Valley. Crater Lake is amazing-I think the boat ride in the lake is worth the extra money.

Definetly stop at the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland if you are interested in theater. It does take a break from performances in the winter so check the website if your going in the winter.

I also like Silver Falls State Park in the Cascade Foothills. Portland has some pretty interesting parks and urban life if interested. If you go in the spring, the Willamette Valley has many type of nursery and flower bulbs farms that bloom and can be very beautiful.

Thanks for the replies to my query as I just begin to plan a car trip from Seattle to San Francisco. You have mentioned some sights which will start me on my research. You asked a few questions. We have never done this road trip before but have been in the two cities many times. The length of the trip will depend on how interesting the car trip sounds. We will fly to Seattle the last of May 07, spend a few days there, then spend several days on the road to San Francisco, and then spend some time there and fly back.

    Is Everyone OK?

or did the Big Wind blow your house to some Oz like place ? :)

We had very high winds here in the Pearl District with a huge bamboo on my terrace blowing over.

We won%26#39;t discuss how much fun I thought it was, going out there in the wind and rain to set it up again, in a sort-of sheltered spot. (Images from old disaster movies running through my mind the whole time)..

Chime in and tell us how you and your neighborhood managed~

    Is Everyone OK?

    ';....or did the Big Wind blow your house....';

For a second there, I thought you might be talking about my brother-in-law. ;-)

Nothing much happened around our house except for a few ornamental trees in pots being blown over, and a matter of a neighbor%26#39;s tree branches raking along the gutter on our house just outside our bedroom all night long. Any property lawyers out there? If the tree%26#39;s planted in his yard, do I have the right to saw off limbs over-hanging into mine?

The other minor annoyance is that the wind wasn%26#39;t strong enough to blow all the leaves off the tree in our front yard. Rats! Another month of raking to look forward to.

    Is Everyone OK?

We fared ok. Did see a bunch of BIG branches down this morning around town. One restaurant had those huge planters with trees in them blown over and into the street. Power flickered a lot last night! We had the headlamps ready:)

I would have loved to have been at the coast in a nice hotel room watching the storm.

Yes, storm watching in 85 mph winds lol...I am a wimp about wind now, after living in Florida for a year, through 5 hurricanes. shudder.

I am glad that I have heard no big damage reports...I hope the houses at the coast are all ok...I imagine a beach shack out there could be in pretty bad shape after storms like this. Glad I don%26#39;t have to worry about that ... one house at a time is enough for me lol.

Mistletoe, I believe it%26#39;s universally accepted that overhanging limbs can be, well, limbed :). In your case, it%26#39;s not only a possible danger but a nuisance. I%26#39;m no lawyer, but you can Google this question.

I would just go over to the neighbor when they are home and tell them you want to trim it back from your roof/gutter, would they like to do it or would they like to leave it to you.

I agree with voyaging, I think this is so all over , once it is over your property, you can do what you like with it ( within reason)..some towns have ordinances..my old town did and we only had to give the neighbor notice , that way they could do it or we would have it done.

A lot better than having an irate neighbor show up at the door because their home has been damaged by a tree or branch..

ScarlettO1, I agree with your approach. If I were approached by my neighbor, I%26#39;d appreciate it and ask only that, whoever does the pruning, do it judiciously so that the tree looks ';whole';. If you want to see hilarious photos of landscaping run amok, see this:

    plantamnesty.org/pruning_gallery/thumbs/bad_鈥?/a>

For all the hype, this storm was a BIG let-down. Started gettin gusty about 5pm but never really picked up. There were a few gusts between 8 and 10 pm but nothing to get too excited about. Very little rain as well...maybe .75 at the most.

The only damage in all of my parks was at Honeyman. A small pine came down over one of our YURTS. The YURT was vacant and sustained very minor damage.

    Den

Den--Glad that it was a let down. Sometimes that is a good thing;)

I was out and about this morning...saw several fences totally blown apart. I think our oldtown must have been hit harder than where I am up on the big hill.

    Lots of rain today though.

I just came back from Whole Foods at Bridgeport and they have a case of prepared foods that was almost empty. Signs up said everything had been removed because of the power outage last night. I was still able to get a pretty yummy salad though:D

Thanks for the advice voyaging and Scarlett. TA needs to give us some emoticons, or I should have put a winking smiley after my question. The only way I%26#39;d get an attorney involved in this situation would be as a joke. My neighbor and I will probably end up limbing the tree together after (or maybe better before) a glass or two of wine. But, it will be his bottle. ;-)

You must be living right, Den. Local news in Portland this morning reported that a couple spots on the coast (Cape Blanco was one, I think) had gusts of 100 mph. I%26#39;d forgotten how spectacular those big storms are at the coast, until being at Bandon Dunes last week walking the trail to the beach in the middle of the worst of Tuesday%26#39;s storm: winds were probably a steady 40 mph, with gusts to 60. It was just amazing how different the beach looked and sounded from just two days earlier.

we were at the coast for part of time manzanita. I gave short update on that. on another thread.

Mistletoe did you golf at Bandon? In the rain

We were at Whistler one slow fall day with rain predicted, maybe. We tried to get tee time for next day. They said you pay when you make tee time. If you cancel for rain tough tooty. they keep money. we went to next town to golf.

  • Area around Hilton Towers OK for walking at night?

Hi all. A friend is coming for a long-anticipated visit, and we%26#39;re meeting in Portland. A really nice hotel WITH a hot tub or sauna is a must.

Hilton Portland %26amp; Executive Towers seems to be the hotel that combines the requisite hot tub, the best price, and the most central location for walking to everywhere

Is it an OK area to walk around in in the evening? (SW 6th ave and SW Taylor, a block from SW Broadway).

The other most likely choice is the Silver Cloud, which costs more but has free parking.

Unless you can suggest somewhere else in that price range? ($127/night) That has a hot tub/whirlpool/sauna?

And just in passing -- in case anyone remembers, I posted here in spring looking for recommendations about where to stay and what to do in Portland for my mother%26#39;s 80th b-day. We ended up staying at the Klimpton (worth ithe price for the comfort, pleasure, and easy downtown access) and had a wonderful time. Thanks to everyone who responded, and to those of you who have created lists of where to go and what to do on this forum - you were enormously helpful.

Area around Hilton Towers OK for walking at night?

If you%26#39;re putting a premium on location, the Hilton is easily the better of the two. What you can%26#39;t walk to from there, you can easily access via MAX and/or the streetcar. The area around the Hilton is fine. You%26#39;ll see homeless and street kids, particularly around Pioneer Square, but they likely won%26#39;t bother you.

Silver Cloud is at the outer edge of one of Portland%26#39;s trendy shopping and dining districts, but there%26#39;s not much in the immediate area, and it%26#39;s a hike even to the streetcar.

    Have a great time!

Area around Hilton Towers OK for walking at night?

We stayed at the Heathman last summer, it is not too far from the Hilton. We finished dinner around 10:00 and walked all over, it was fine. I would go with the Hilton, hope you have a great time in Portland! :)

pastrylover ( so am I )...will you be here soon, like over the holidays?

They are putting together the huge Christmas tree that goes in Pioneer Square and there is plenty of security in that area day and night. . with the huge stores, big hotels and holidays festivities, you should not worry at all about walking around in the evenings.

You will only be about 4 blocks from the Streetcar stop also, on 10th, I think the Hilton will be fine for you..much better than the Silver Cloud.

Let us know if you have any more questions, every day the city is wrapped a little more in holiday lights and shops have such great windows!

The Hilton will be fine, especially if the price is right. I live downtown in The Pearl and walk all over the place in the evening. Late night, after 10 or so, I might consider a cab if I were more than a few blocks from home.

So, if you find that you would prefer a cab, remember that it%26#39;s best to call for one about 15 minutes in advance. It%26#39;s not like some cities where you just step out and flag one. Radio Cab and Broadway Cab are reliable choices.

I agree...for someone visiting Portland during the holidays the Hilton is the best choice. The Silver Cloud is very nice, though. They have recently remodeled their interiors. And don%26#39;t worry about walking downtown. It is safe...and a cab ride downtown won%26#39;t cost you much if you are still unsure...or its raining cats and dogs.

    There's hope for La Pine

I%26#39;ve visited La Pine about once a year for the past twenty years. It%26#39;s growing and changing. Just visited for 3 days, and had occasion to visit the post office, the library, and several shops. Everyone I spoke with was helpful and friendly.

    There's hope for La Pine

With skyrocketing housing prices in Bend, nearby towns are becoming the choice for people who want to move to central Oregon but can%26#39;t afford the Bend market. First it was Redmond. I have a residential developer friend telling me that La Pine is next. So, I think you%26#39;re right in saying there%26#39;s hope for La Pine, depending on what you%26#39;re hoping for. ;-)

    There's hope for La Pine

LaPine has grown. They had a good motel now. for a time only decent motels were Bend then Klamath Falls. I have stayed there a couple of times. Also LaPine a rather nice place to spend an evening

La Pine, to me, is the most beautiful area in Central Oregon! In Bend and Redmond you dont get the tall pines that surround you nearly every where you go in La Pine. The scenery was enough to make me want to move there. Also, the new residental developments look awesome.

And now LaPine is incorporated. i congratulate them for doing so. It really does look like a town.

Don%26#39;t think i would recognize La Pine anymore, its been too long since i%26#39;ve been there (probably 15 yrs). Glad that they are incoorporated now, but still have to worry about water situation, and more importantly all those septic tanks on pourous lava!!!

    Guest Ranches

We are looking for a great guest ranch to vacation to this year. We have two children ages 13 and 9. Any suggestions?

    Guest Ranches

Not sure what you mean by ';guest ranch';, but this place has qualified as ';great'; for our family for years: http://www.blackbutteranch.com/. It%26#39;s more vacation resort than ranch, but there are cattle in the meadow and horses to ride, so you can at least get a taste.

    Guest Ranches

We absolutely love Black Butte Ranch and have been going there since our kids were little (now they are 11 and 14) and they still look forward to our time there. However, it is not a true guest ranch where you get to help with the horses, etc. The only one I am aware of is Rock Springs Guest Ranch just outside of Bend. I have not been there but there was a recent discussion about it on this forum. I believe there are more true guest ranches in Colorado and Montana.

In addition to the Rock Springs Guest Ranch just outside of Bend (which is very nice) there is the Long Hollow Ranch north of Sisters that is a working cattle ranch. There is also one called Willow Springs that is in south east Oregon that could be more difficult to get to if you are flying to Oregon instead of driving. There are lots of guests ranches in the United States, so if you are not set on one in Oregon, go to duderanches.com and you%26#39;ll find plenty to choose from

Check out the Idaho Dude and Guest Ranch Association at www.idahodra.com. There are several great guest ranches in Idaho. You can%26#39;t find better scenery. Kids especially love cattle drives, and yours are old enough to fully participate.

As noted by mistletoe, unsure of your definition. You might take a look at SunRiver, just south of Bend. It provides many amenities that probably would be fun for you and the kids. Also, it%26#39;s a great area to explore the very interesting volcanic landmarks and the High Desert Museum. See this: www.sunriver-resort.com/resort-amenities.php

    LOL...Montana...Oregon...

The only posts from this poster are about this Pawsup place. Hmmmm...lol!

    Saw that also...

Paws up. like for dogs? lol...should I tell Pup there is a dude ranch for him somewhere?

I want to go to Black Butte Ranch..I want to go to the Sisters Rodeo, so that is what I would recommend..based on what I want LOL

Looking for hotsprings with hotels between Bend and PDX

I can%26#39;t remember the hotel I saw on one of the passes with a beautiful hotel? I remember it had a pool that was an actual hot spring and a trail leading up into the woods. I%26#39;m looking for something along these lines for my husband and I to go for Thanksgiving weekend. I appreciate any input and ideas.

    Thanks!

Looking for hotsprings with hotels between Bend and PDX

could it be belknap hot springs on hwy 126? (between eugene and bend)

Looking for hotsprings with hotels between Bend and PDX

There is Brittenbush on the N Santiam via a dirt rd between Bend and Portland, or you can get there via hwy 97 to 26 west. That would be my guess with regards to what you are thinking of.

The only other place I can think of not mentioned yet is the Kah Nee Ta Resort %26amp; Casino on the Warm Springs Reservation that has a natural hot springs spa and a hotel. Don%26#39;t think there%26#39;d be a trail to the woods, but they do have hiking/horse trails.

Our three member scenic Byways rating team drove all over Oregon Since Breitenbush was near one of the prposals. Other two, a woman and a man, team members said we needed to see the Hot Springs.

I decided not to warn them, because I was pretty sure that would not deter them, and was not sure if we would run into the nude bathers, but we did. The man in group was the photographer and he had 3 cameras. but we did not seem to bother the bathers.

Best way to get to Breitenbush is leave OR-22 at Detroit and head northeast on Forest Service Road along Breitenbush River 8 to 10 miles. It is paved road.

I would guess it is Belknap you remember

    http://www.belknaphotsprings.com/About_Us.htm

Also Bagby hot springs. Pretty primitive. Don%26#39;t leave any valuables in your car - might be hard to do if you have luggage. There are tubs you can sit in somewhat privately and then a large communal hot tub. Kah-nei-ta (sp) and Belknap could both be what you are thinking of. Belknap has a wonderful trail that leads to a garden in the woods. Its right next to the McKenzie River.

  • Billy Smoothboar's Sports Bar

While traveling up the coast, we found a restaurant that I haven%26#39;t seen a review on. It%26#39;s Billy Smoothboar%26#39;s on Hwy. 101 in Bandon.

My family stopped here on a road trip up the California/Oregon coast and thought that it was definitely worth recommending for a quick lunch while traveling up Hwy101.

I overheard the hostess telling another table that all you have to do is to request being seated in a separate room to avoid any lingering smoke drifiting in from the lounge. We are quite sensitive to cigarette smoke, but we didn%26#39;t find the odor to be strong enough to bother us and didn%26#39;t request a move.

The food was really excellent! In our party, club sandwiches, bread bowls with clam chowder, chicken strips (kids) and dinner salads were ordered. All were really well prepared and served. The separate lounge has pool tables and TVs for the sports bar minded patrons. We found Billy Smoothboar%26#39;s to be good food at a fair price and would definitely stop in again.

    Billy Smoothboar's Sports Bar

We stayed in Bandon for a week last year visiting family. It is better described as a large restaurant %26amp; bar located in a hunting lodge along the highway, just outside of the small town. Beautiful high quality furnishings.

Plenty of locals were there when we had dinner. Must have a good reputation in the community. Other families were there as well. Yet, it was quiet and welcoming.

Menu selection was large. Plentiful portions made it memorable enough to add this recommendation. Prices are reasonable, but not cheap. Service was several steps above the usual roadhouse experience.

We%26#39;ll be sure to visit again next year.

  • Two weeks til I have to entertain: IDEAS needed for November

My cousin from England and my mother from San Diego arrive in two weeks for a first look at the Portland area.

I have a few ideas of things to do, weather permitting.

Saturday Market, a day trip to the coast and of course to get some cheese at Tillamook, maybe the gorge, maybe not.....I was thinking Oregon Gardens but I have a feeling that should wait for a summer trip.

So I need any ideas I have forgotten. Short trips with not much walking are best, as my mom is limited by age and arthritis.

A couple good ideas for nice dinners in a quiet place.....Not super pricey (like El Gaucho) but nice.

Best Pinot Noir to send back to England? I honestly (sorry Scarlett) have not made the rounds of the wineries yet so I have no idea where to start. We drink alot of smoking loon and bogle....sssh.

Best festivals the second and third weeks of November? (9th -16th/20th)

    Thanks all.

So far I still LOVE IT here!

Two weeks til I have to entertain: IDEAS needed for November

Don%26#39;t think i would go to Oregon Garden with only a few days. Not sure what kind of people mover they might be using then. And they tend to be fairly seasonal., like Rose Garden better in late spring. Japanese Gardens easier visit and less seasonal. And so is Chines Garden, though not much of a ';garden'; to one who likes to see lots of plants.

Then i would cast a vote for Gorge. Think someone from england would be awed with the waterfalls. Several sites pretty easy access from Old Hwy. Multnomah Falls from I-84 is not easy really And there may still be some color left on trees.

Two weeks til I have to entertain: IDEAS needed for November

    Hi Chicogirl,

Sounds like you%26#39;re on the right track. Don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve thought of St. Helens or Mt. Hood at Timberline Lodge, both of which are impressive, whether the 1st or 51st time. The Gorge is good too if you remember you do have some walking to get to several of the falls: Bridal Veil and Wahkeena in particular. I was up the gorge a week ago; it%26#39;s just beautiful this time of year. If you do head to the coast, Cape Disappointment State Park would be a good stop; maybe you haven%26#39;t been there yet. It%26#39;s in WA, just out of Ilwaco, about 15 miles from Astoria. Spectacular views of the mouth of the Columbia from the Interpretive Center.

For restaurants, your mom (and the rest of you) will like Fenouil; very classy and beautiful space, and not El Gaucho-like on the pocket-book necessarily. Places like Alberta Street Oyster Bar, Wildwood, and Higgins would also appeal, I think, though they%26#39;re a little higher on the noise scale. All do food with a PNW focus and flair. For more casual, but still really good, maybe try something like Le Pigeon.

Best Pinot Noir to send back to England....... Hmmm........ That%26#39;s obviously a matter of taste and how much you%26#39;re willing to spend. I was out in wine country earlier today, and tasted a Cana%26#39;s Feast pinot from Cuneo that was wonderful. Also had some Adelsheim and Scott Paul that I think would favorably compare with whatever your cousin might be buying from France. For a uniquely Oregon Pinot, pick up something from Westrey in McMinnville, or maybe Patricia Green Cellars. If your guests are here over Thanksgiving, they%26#39;d get a kick out of wine tasting that weekend. It%26#39;s one of the two biggest in the year for Oregon%26#39;s wine industry.

Glad to read you%26#39;re still loving it here. How about your daughter?

Chicogirl--Glad to see you posting:) I agree with the others...the gorge would be very nice, and the Japanese Gardens are stunning. The Chinese Gardens are nice, but IMO, the Japanese are much more impressive. Also Timberline and Mt. St. Helens are both great ideas. If you go to St. Helens, be sure to go to the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

If you want someplace close to home for a very nice meal, come down here to Sherwood to the Hunters Ridge Grill. We were there a week ago and loved it ,and went back last night. They are right off of HWY 99 at Tualatin-Sherwood Rd/ Roy Rogers (Roy Rogers side), across from the Safeway Plaza. From the street it doesn%26#39;t look like much, but when you go around back you will see the difference, and once inside...very nice!

If you head to the coast on Hy. 26 to Seaside first (I like Hy. 6 too), have you ever stopped at Camp 18, the logging museum restaurant? The food is good and the setting is quite unique.

It%26#39;s at mile marker 18, hence the name.

15 to 16 miles farther west, about mile marker 2 or 3 on that Hy. 26, is a sign for the largest Sitka Spruce tree in the USA. The tree is only a few hundred feet from the highway. There%26#39;s a driveway over the bridge.

There%26#39;s a cool tree with an arch-like double trunk, about 100 feet from that big tree.

It%26#39;s the tree in the image on this page...

    http://www.mdvaden.com/gallery1.shtml

The tree is fun to look at again and again.

I%26#39;ll frequenlty head west on 26, see Seaside, Cannon Beach, etc., and head south to Tillamook, then backtrack on 6 along the Wilson River.

I would pass on the Oregon Garden too. I donated some tree pruning service to the garden a few years ago, and it%26#39;s not worth the long drive this time of year. Even the Japanese Garden will be passing it%26#39;s fall prime soon. You%26#39;ll know, just by watching the foliage in your local neighborhoods.

I%26#39;m not an expert on wines, but I had some friends in that business years ago. I recall that Ponzi Vineyards out Scholls Ferry Road, just west of Beaverton, is a good vineyard to visit.

Pinot Noir is supposed to be one of their staples. I met the Ponzis when they first started, like back in the 80s. Good natured folk.

I believe the Johnston Ridge Observatory atop Mt. St. Helens has closed or will soon close, so better check this out. Also, with the recent cold, we%26#39;ve got snowing in even the low passes. I%26#39;d vote for the Gorge; go the scenic route, with your guests on the passenger side to enhance their views, return via the freeway. Perhaps see a dam or two, hinging upon your guests abilities and interests. Hope you all have a nice visit.

voyaging--Ah, good catch! With this beautiful weather we have had, I forgot that JRO would be closing soon, or might already be closed. I just saw the forecast for snow at 4000 ft! I hope we get a lot this winter:)

Thanks, Mtngirl. FYI, one of our sons is staying the night somewhere east of Snoqualmie Pass due to I-90 being closed! Hope he can find a motel. We, too, hope for lots of snow, but after he gets back to his house!

Best Pinot Noir ~ I may be bias, but definately Willamette Valley Vineyards. Pinot Noir is not my favorite wine, but I do like Willamette Valley%26#39;s.

Lisa! That is hysterical! We have had a few bottles of Willamette and then heard from three different wine snobs that it is not really considered ';Drinkable'; so we figured too many y ears of two buck chuck have ruined our taste buds!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I guess I am on the right track. The restaurant recommendations are particularly helpful. Much of the touring depends on the weather.

And yeah, I big time owe you an email Mtngrl.....sorry to be so quiet, lots going on. The child is settleing in better - she is off to do outdoor school as a counselor tomorrow to the camp up near Scappose somewhere......

AFter you visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory, you may also want to check out the Blue Heron. They make some really great Brie cheese and there is also a wine tasting bar there. The Air Museum is also pretty fun and educational in Tillamook.

Nehalem is a nice little stop also, they have a main street there with some nice antique shops. We love the Pinot Noir from Domaine Serene, Archery Summit, Domaine Drouhin, Sokkol Blosser and Ponzi. Tina%26#39;s in Dundee is a nice little stop for lunch or the Dundee Bistro. Joel Palmer House for a nice, elegant dinner. The Painted Lady in Dundee is also getting rave reviews these days.

If you decide against the gardens, the PIttock Mansion is interesting. clarklewis, Carlyle or Fenouil are all very nice places to have lunch. Have fun! :)

    PDX This weekend!

Flying into PDX this Friday (I know stupid move) to visit family in medford (I%26#39;m driving the 4 1/2 hours south in order to save 300 dollars on a plane ticket) and then returning to PDX area sunday evening. I%26#39;m staying at the Sherwood Inn in Lake Oswego. Has anybody heard anything about the place? Seems nice enough from their website.

besides the typical outdoorsy things to do in PDX, just WHAT is there to do? (I hear it%26#39;s going to be blasted cold!) I wanted to see multnomah falls and mt hood which would be worth braving the weather for. I am only going to be around until Wednesday morning my flight leaves at 6 am (eek!). I sure hope I have enough time!

Was planning on going to the bag dad sunday night. and possibly the grotto at some point, i hear the christmas lights are fabulous.

    PDX This weekend!

Sherwood Inn is just a couple miles from my office here. It%26#39;s not much to look at, and being 10 miles south of Portland, not a great location either, except for the easy access to I-5. Not that the area is bad; just isn%26#39;t much of interest around it. For a taste of decent local fast food, try a meal at the Burgerville next door. Or, head to Bridgeport, the Portland area%26#39;s latest and greatest suburban urban village shopping mall. Couple decent restaurants there too.

Besides the always expected rain, weather shouldn%26#39;t be too bad. Temps in Portland will be in the mid-high 40%26#39;s, but snow is forecasted on Mt. Hood, so tire chains may be required to make that drive. Take the old Columbia River Highway out to Multnomah Falls. Besides the several other falls along the route, views are spectacular.

If it%26#39;s snowing on Mt. Hood and you%26#39;re not comfortable making that drive, head the other direction to Cannon Beach at the coast, about 90 minutes from the Sherwood Inn.

What%26#39;s going on at the Bagdad? Since it%26#39;s also on the east side, you could go the extra couple miles to the Grotto the same evening. Others obviously have a different opinion, but I would suggestion not setting expectations too high, either for Bagdad Theater, or the Grotto.

    PDX This weekend!

Check the weather before you head out to do some sightseeing... I would probably bet for Multnolmah falls and the Columbia River Scenic Highway as being your most enjoyable driving option. There would be enough stuff to do here for a day trip, ...there are many other falls to see esp. since it%26#39;s been so rainy, Latorell, Bridal Veil, etc. Bonneville Dam has interesting grounds, fish ponds, fish ladders and tours of the dam if your into that sort of thing. Hood River is kind of a tourist friendly town. I also like the eastern portion of the CRSH from Mosier to The Dalles. Tom McCall Preserve-Nature Conservancy Property is pretty spectacular place to hike in the spring due to wildflowers, but don%26#39;t know about the winter.

The weather for the next week storms says it will be be dumping snow(in terms of feet) on Mt Hood. Add holiday traffic going over the pass and it seems a bit much for a vacation-to me. Others may think differently and it depends on how bad you want to see the mountain, but if it is snowy you wont see anything anyways, execpt for Timberline Lodge.

Snow level expected to be at 2000%26#39; or so soon . Unless you like driving in snow suggest you follow others advice and visit the Gorge or the coast. and is snow level drops more coast to Cannon beach may not be simple.

I think there is a parade downtown PDX on Sat. there is a Christmas tree lighting in Pioneer Sq where many go. my daughter does not miss it. Parking not easy downtown. Last year most of the women in our family went to a show downtown. i think Fri afternoond or Sat. It was a show on stage. It was also a Christmas theme. wife not here right now or would ask her name of show

Downtown Portland pretty festive Thanksgiving weekend.

    http://www.travelportland.com/event_calendar/

    www.pova.com

This is the Portland Visitors site and above is the calendar of events. This will help with plans in town, Saturday I think is the Macys Parade, the Christmas tree lighting is this week in Pioneer Square...down here in the Pearl, lights are on all the trees and shop windows are getting all decorated , very cheerful :)

The Museum of Art is good if you want to stay indoors and be warm, the many shops and restaurants in the Pearl and NW 23rd street can keep you comfortable, happy and well-fed :)

Plan on traffic when you come into town and out from Lake Oswego on I-5..

The Kennedy School is also a good place to see a film and have some food and drink. Christmas lights should be up and in full force. Downtown and the Pearl do Christmas up nice.

I live here and this is what I am doing this weekend:

    Shopping in The Pearl

    A film downtown

    Lunch at Piazza Italia

A visit to the Portland Art Museum

A drive in the West Hills around Washington Park

    Dinner at Giorgios

    Coffee with friends

    The laundry

If you are driving to Medford check the weather travel advisories before you head out. There is snow coming in for the mountains and you have to climb a few small mountains on I-5 from Portland to Medford.

    Have a wonderful visit!

WOW! So much information!!! Holy COW I don%26#39;t know where to start.

Well I have friends that live in MFR, who drive to PDX all the time and they always go to the BagDad for movies and food they say it%26#39;s ';Cosy'; and I like the whole cozy feel. And I like christmas lights, so that%26#39;s why I wanted to go to the grotto to see their display.

Are there any indoor gardens much like we have Phipps Conservatory here in Pittsburgh? If they do that would be awesome. I was hoping it wouldn%26#39;t snow or at least hold off until we could get to Mt Hood but que sera sera, there%26#39;s always the spring!

So I%26#39;m landing Friday night and making the long trek to MFR. So far my plans are for Saturday:

Sleep! (Can anyone say Jet Lag?)

    Visit The Family

Meet up with Friends and go to Ashland to see Christmas Lights at the Plaza, Eat dinner at The Black Sheep

Movie or Karaoke at Beijing House

    Sleep!

Sunday I have no clue, I%26#39;ll probably just chill around and wait for my friend to get off work so we can drive up to PDX together. The hotel I%26#39;m staying in has a pool so we%26#39;ll at least be able to do some indoor swimming and maybe grab some grub at Bridgeville or Bag Dad or Kennedy School... they all sound excellent. I%26#39;m not much of a shopper, so shopping is OUT. The only shopping I do is on Amazon or Ebay.

It%26#39;s Monday and Tuesday we have to fill with things to do. And if it%26#39;s snowing and I have a rental car I do NOT think they%26#39;re going to give me chains so I can go mountain excursioning. They may be rather apt to look at me and say ';Okay we want the car back NOW.'; No please, no thank you... just NOW. LOL!

The Gorge sounds like a must do and it was something we had planned for monday at least. Other than that we might just go to a blazers game and call it a weekend.

They%26#39;re probably nothing like Phipps, but the Chinese Classical Gardens would be okay, even in the rain: http://www.portlandchinesegarden.org/. And if you happen to catch a window when it%26#39;s not raining, the Japanese Gardens, even better: http://www.japanesegarden.com/.

No indoor botanical gardens here, I have been to the Japanese Gardens in the rain, if possible, it is more beautiful and atmospheric but you really have to be in the mood to do that.

Indoor activities here would be shopping, Powells books, museums, galleries, movies ( there are SO many good theatres!)

Being from the NE...cold does not bother us but rain does limit ones outdoor activities..

    Have a great visit!

A trip up The Columbia River Gorge is absolutely awe inspiring. I live here and every time I drive up I am amazed at the beauty. Even if it%26#39;s rainy and blustery. Unless weather advisors say otherwise, drive up I-80 at least to see Multnomah Falls, the incredible Columbia River and take time to visit Hood River. It is a charming town, with many good places to eat and have coffee.

    Go Beavs!

7 - 0 with only two minutes gone in the first quarter! Blow-out????

    Go Beavs!

20-7 at halftime. Let%26#39;s home the Beavs keep this momentum going!

    Go Beavs!

    Go Beavs!!!!

I finally got more cable, mostly to see game today on FSN. Son is here he is also watching Nebr-Colo game. He lived in Omaha close to 10 years. and was Husker fan before that.

    back later when game over

OMG, what a nail biter!!! But the better team won, despite a couple of really bad calls:)

    YAY BEAVS!!!

Wow! what a game. Hung in till very end. could have gone either way. who was that little short guy who won the game? the woman announcer was almost as tall. Enough to give him Groza Award again.

my grandson yelled yea when duck made 2 point conv I told him he could sleep outside tonight.

Phirl--That was Serna. He is an amazing kicker! LOL...I think your GS should sleep outside...without a tent;) My dad was at the game with his brother...who was Benny Beaver years ago.

I got dragged out of the house after the first quarter, and only caught snatches of the rest of the game when I could find a TV at Bridgeport. Poop! Hafta be glad about the final score, though. :-)

Had to leave the room during the final two minutes...

Motel, Economical/Cheap, CLEAN, Medford and Grants Pass

My SO and son leave Saturday for San Francisco, stopping over in Medford or Grants Pass. Advice appreciated on a clean but economical motel in either of those two cities. Many thanks.

Motel, Economical/Cheap, CLEAN, Medford and Grants Pass

We just had famil from the SF area come visit for Thanksgiving, and they stayed at the Best Western in Medford on the way up and said it was fine. Too bad your post wasn%26#39;t earlier so I could have asked them questions, but they are on their way back already.

Motel, Economical/Cheap, CLEAN, Medford and Grants Pass

Holiday Inn Express Grants Pass- was good about 1 year ago when I stayed there. Right off the freeway...

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Holiday Inn Express many times - it%26#39;s just fine. I do prefer the La Quinta Inn and the Comfort Inn, however. The breakfast is a little better, and they%26#39;re a little bigger rooms. All three have free wireless internet.

Comfort Inn is off the first Grants Pass exit (downtown) - the La Quinta and Holiday Inn Express are off the last Grants Pass exit. All are conveniently located to food and freeway.

Nothing special, for sure, but clean, convenient, and as economical as anything in Grants Pass.

We%26#39;ve also stayed at the Riverside Motel - once. The others are better.

Another thought with Grants Pass - you can take the Redwood Highway out of Grants Pass for a more scenic and enjoyable drive to San Francisco than I-5, and not all that much slower.

Thank you all for advice. I sent it on to them where they will pick up this info. WiFi. Sorry for the last minute request.

Mid-course correction. I called my SO and her son and told them what you said, Johann%26amp;Sandra, and they pushed on, on that route, to stay in Crescent City for the night. Intrepid souls :). We had taken that route ourselves and truly enjoyed it, so she thought her son would also. Thanks again to all.
