Does Astoria have Recreational Gliders by Nearby Airports?

I was wondering what is close by Astoria or over into Washington. As Airports that have Recreational Gliders?

If anyone knows, I would appreciate the information here.

Thanks!

I was thinking if I could get myself moved up in the area, that I might pursue the idea of Recreational Gliding if possible.

Does Astoria have Recreational Gliders by Nearby Airports?

I don%26#39;t know about Washington, but the nearest commercial airport in Oregon is Portland. There%26#39;s a non-commercial airport in Seaside; maybe someone knows if they fly gliders from there. With weather as it is - often rainy, and usually windy - I would guess gliding opportunities are fairly limited.

I probably should had said ... ';Air Fields';, instead of ';Airports';

I don%26#39;t think ';Gliders'; should be flying close by Commercial Airliners and big planes. ';Gliders'; would be hard to control and be difficult to avoid bigger aircrafts. I don%26#39;t think ';Gliders'; are allowed in such actual ';Airports';. (???)

Plus, I thought the Airport in Astoria, would be more like an ';Air Field';, because of it handling small airplanes (? I Think?). And I thought Warrenton also had an ';Air Field';?

I%26#39;m just wondering like Naselle, Washington or Raymond, Washington or even as far up as Hoquiam, Washington would have ';Air Fields'; for such ';Gliders';?

I had done a Google search for Gliders.

I found ... ';SOARING SOCIETY OF AMERICA'; Web Site for what seems as the major site for such.

I found 3 Sites being the closest that can be good with a bit of traveling to get to.

West of Portland ...

1. North Plains ... Willamette Valley Soaring Club

East of Portland ...

2. Hood River

North-East into Washington ...

3. Enumclaw, Washington (East from Tacoma)

I now have me the Internet Access to Help me out on this now.

THANKS!

I did see flyers and signs while in Astoria for glider rides, near the column, but I don%26#39;t know any details.

I think there is very few comerical flights in/out of astoria. I have flown out of there and all the planes i saw were private cessna type planes (no gliders). Mostly it is used for coast guard operations. watch out for elk on the runway :)

Ok My Dh is a pilot and we live at a grass airstrip in Svensen (East of Astoria about 16minutes :)). Astoria Airport is not just an airfield per sea, but it is low airspace meaning no tower, and though you do need to radio in it isn%26#39;t strict. There are 2 runways in use, it used to be a military airbase.

I would call John Twiss, look for Twiss Air Service at Questdex.com and ask John or Melody about the Gliders. I know they have lots of gliders up in Hillsboro area, but I don%26#39;t know of any here. I don%26#39;t see much of a problem doing them, .....If you are talking about the ones pulled up by an aircraft and released? It seems feesible.

Oh yes about the Elk, make sure to fly the pattern before landing, they put up a fence, but the Elk still get in.

Washington has an airstrip at Longview/Kelso (larger airport than Astoria if I remember right) and also on the Penninsula (1 runway, it is gravel I think.. careful of winds here).

Seaside also has an airport with one paved runway.

Horizon used to fly in and out of Astoria, not sure there are any small commercial flights anymore.

OH and the Airport is technically in Warrenton, but it is labeled as Astoria Airport.

Ok Dh just walked in and I asked he said nope to the Astoria one, but the nearest one is Hillsboro at North Plains ;).

Hope that helps.

You can however do ultralights, or trikes, they are similar to hanggliding but with a motor and landing gear.

In addition you can also built your own experimental planes, my DH is building an RV-9a and my neighbors own planes they have built also.

PST--- if you want to move to a grass field check out Karpen%26#39;s Airport here in Svensen/Knappa (Astoria addresses), there is currently 2 homes for sale and 2-3 lots.
