Cannon Beach, Seaside, Astoria -- best for tide pools, etc?

Looking for the best place to spend a couple of days on the coast. (We are flying into Portland then driving to Seattle.) We are traveling with our 6-yr old boys, so art galleries and romantic restaurants are out of the question, but we would love to check out tide pools and explore a rocky coastline. Any suggestions for things to see and places to stay?

Cannon Beach, Seaside, Astoria -- best for tide pools, etc?

Both Ecola State Park and Cannon Beach (near the rock). Kids love it. Heck, we do too!

Most of the kid friendly places are in ';old town'; by the water.

The Seattle thing is confusing me a little, but you can get tide pools, rocky coastline, AND art galleries, AND romantic restaurants, all in the same town: Cannon Beach. For tidepools and rocky coastline, check out Haystack Rock and Ecola State Park (don%26#39;t miss rocks at south end of Indian Beach). And if romantic restaurants don%26#39;t fit anywhere in your plans, try Ecola Seafood Market and Restaurant, or Fultano%26#39;s pizza. Best family lodging in town: SurfSand Resort.

Should also say that, if your sons are into arcades and carnival rides, stop in Seaside. And flying balsa-wood airplanes from the top of the Astoria Column would be very cool for them too.

Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach for the tide pools. Take him to Mo%26#39;s, it is right on the beach and very family-friendly. They have good clam chowder in a casual atmosphere.

Seaside, where we spent the majority of the summer would be lots of fun for him. There is a small aquarium with a touch tank, you can feed the seals, it%26#39;s a lot of fun there.

If history interests you, Astoria is very scenic and he may enjoy a ride on the riverfront trolley there. Have fun! :)

As far as I know, ';summer'; is considered to be the months of June July and August, so a couple of weeks in June really cannot give a person a full idea of what the beaches here have to offer to visitors with young children.

I think you should go with mistletoes ( a local) advice..Seaside would be a fun day, imagine the Jersey shore ...

Cannon Beach has everything you mentioned, beautiful area, beautiful homes ( we keep imagining owning one), plenty of art galleries, fun shops for all ages, many restaurants and Haystack Rock with the Tide Pools.

Bring warm clothes for our Oregon summer lol and the camera..

Oh, as for places to stay, if you choose Seaside, we enjoyed 4 nights at the Tides by the Sea when our beach cottage was rented in June. It is very family friendly, down by Ave U where my husband and daughter surfed. We had a two bedroom unit which was nice when you are traveling with your family. There is also a pool that was very nice and heated perfectly for our nightly lap swims. :)

I will second the recommendation for SurfSand in Cannon Beach. :)

FamilyOf4, Surfsand also has a nice family restaurant there with good food, the Wayfarer. I would also suggest spending some time at Oswald West State Park. I have a review with photos of Short Sand Beach there on this site. It is a gorgeous, short walk down to the beach there with some awesome scenery. :)

Another vote for the Surfsand. We have stayed there numerous times, as has mistletoes family, and we have always been pleased.

When are you coming?

The hotel has totally remodeled their ocean front building. The other buildings are scheduled to begin remodels next month. They do have a pool that the boys would probably enjoy. The hotel is the only resort on the Oregon coast with a cabana service. Plus there are all sorts of activities for families and kids.

The Wayfarer is very good, and we like that they have quite a few lighter options. Both the hotel and the restaurant look right out to Haystack Rock.

Cannon Beach, and Indian beach (Look for Ecola St. Park)-

Make sure to get a tide book, or rip out the front of a phone book so you don%26#39;t get caught between tides.

South of Cannon Beach all along the way before Manzanita are awsome places for kiddos to play, Hug Point is one that notable and you should be able to find information on it. There is also Oswald West St. Park which is a great place to camp, or just spend the day exploring.

Oh almost forgot here are a couple lists that might help.
