Where to stay in Portland

Hi

My wife and I will be visiting Portland for 4 days in January 2007. Could someone tell me the best district to stay in, that is close too all the attractions and safe.

The Riverplace hotel is the least attractive choice, too far from the middle of things and in the midst of highway construction. The Paramount Hotel is in a great spot but there is construction going on in front of the hotel and has to be quite noisy.

Otherwise, all of these hotels are great.

Hi patagon, we enjoyed a nice stay at the Heathman Hotel last month. Nice location, great restaurant and very nice rooms. We had the Symphony Suite that was well-appointed and comfortable.

We also enjoy the Riverplace Hotel, a Larkspur property, just a few minutes from city center. Very luxurious property, right on the waterfront. A private spa and access to the Riverplace Athletic Club is included with your room. Try to book under the POVA website and you will receive complimentary parking and breakfast with your room.

Have fun! Another consideration might be the Inn at Northrup Station, I have some photos posted on this site of the hotel. It is close to the great shopping and two of my favorite restaurants, Wildwood and Paley%26#39;s Place are right next door to the Inn. Enjoy Portland and let us know what you decide on! Cheers! :)

Scarletts list should give you some great ideas.

Even though I live here, we have stayed at the 5th Avenue Suites several times. Beautiful hotel, very good location, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. A plus for this hotel for in January is that the valet parking is underground. January is usually pretty wet here, and with this set up you stay dry.

I would advise against the Riverplace for two reasons. One, it is not in a central location like you are asking, and second there is heavy construction going on all around it and it will be like that for some time.

syrahgirl, next time you visit Portland, you will have to find out first hand, how much of a mess Riverplace is, so you might stop recommending it, even though others warn visitors about it.

Its a shame to think just how many times and how many visitors were advised poorly by listening to someones advice who doesnt even know the area, save for drive bys years ago,Stick with the locals for Oregon info and californians for california info. Should.nt you be the Fresno expert Syrah? ;) cheers..

I have to agree that it is certainly doing a disservice to anyone posting questions here, to constantly post wrong advice , when the poster rarely comes here / stays in Portland, at all. And even when corrected, constantly repeats the same tired old advice.

We just returned from 5 nights at the Multnomah Embassy Suites downtown Portland, and found it to be terrific. You may not need a place with a separate bedroom, but the hotel is really top notch, very clean, convenient to the MAX, great pool and breakfasts, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Thanks for the review Nomad!
