Questions about the Shakespeare Festival

It%26#39;s our first time to the Shakespeare Festival and we are very excited. We are going to watch Two Gentlemen from Verona, this Friday at 8:30PM. Does anyone know what time the play usually end? I was estimating around 10:30PM. We are camping at the Valley of Rogue State Park so we will have to drive about 40 minutes out of Ashland and was wondering about how late we would get back. I was trying to figure out how early we need to get up on Saturday to get to Crater Lake.

The play will be held in the Elizabethan Stage which I am told is outside. Does it get pretty chilly? Should we bring blankets and insect repellent? We%26#39;ve already packed binoculars since we are in the Section C seats. Should we bring anything else? How early does the restaurants close in Ashland? Are there places to grab a bite to eat or snack after the play? Your advice is appreciated : )

Most plays we%26#39;ve attended have lasted about two hours, but Shakespeare got carried away sometimes and wrote longer ones, so you might check. Several restaurants cater to after-theater diners, but I can%26#39;t remember which. If you%26#39;ve got time, arrive early and ask around. The ones we%26#39;ve noticed were on the main street and/or near the plaza area at the entrance to Lithia Park. For the complete experience, you%26#39;ll also want to attend the Green Show, a free dance and/or music performance staged in the courtyard near the entrances to the theaters. It starts around 7:15, but be there at least 15 minutes early to get a decent place from which to watch.

For your first time, you definitely picked the right venue; Elizabethan Stage is cool (not literally ;-) ). No to blankets and bug spray, but regardless of forecast, you%26#39;ll want a light sweater or jacket. Rethinking this here.... you might want a blanket for the Green Show (to spread on the grass). Binoculars are good, but they don%26#39;t help you see through or around people. If you have that problem, rent a pillow or two so you%26#39;ll sit higher.

Have fun! Oh, and the drive to Crater Lake from your campground is about two hours.

In my experience most restaurants are closed after the plays, so you might want to bring a snack along for afterwards. They do offer concessions inside the theater, and there are blankets and pillows available to rent as well. We usually bring a light blanket to the Elizabethan even when the weather is nice ';just in case'; (and they make good seat cushions). Enjoy the play!

Have you considered dining before the play? If so, I would suggest the Peerless @ the Peerless Hotel. (I have a recent review with photos on this site.)

We have also very much enjoyed Chateaulin in Ashland. They offer a fixed price menu that is great, includes dessert and two glasses of wines that pair with the meal. :)

Too bad for the person who can%26#39;t make it, but what a generous offer. Wish I could take you up on it. If you have no takers, I%26#39;m quite sure that when you arrive in Ashland, you%26#39;ll have no trouble finding someone who%26#39;d like a theater ticket.

Dinner before the show sounds great. You will love the Green Show, there are some very talented people in this. I have always wanted to see a play in the Elizabethan Theater, sounds like a nice night! :)

Why not make it a point to see a play on your next drive through Ashland, syrahgirl? Regardless of which theater, there really is no comparison to the Green Show.
