we%26#39;re flying to portland %26amp; have 41/2 days to tour. We leave from Prtland to Oakland CA. What should we see? Should we take day trips or stay in the Mt. Hood area?

I would stay in Portland and take day trips to the Columbia River Gorge, the wine country and the coast. We like the Heathman Hotel, downtown and the Riverplace down by the waterfront.

What are your interests, budget, etc. and we can go from there! Welcome to the TA forums and happy travel planning! :)

You can do either, day trips or stay around Mt. Hood. Much just depends on your interests. If you really enjoy the outdoors, I would recommend a night in the gorge or around the mountain. Share a few details and we can help you more.

I agree with our Local Expert here, Mtngrl..stay in Portland and do day trips. Even Cannon Beach/the Coast is just a 90 minute drive from town..

Stay in town, 5th Avenue Suites is our favorite..Riverplace is in a bad spot right now- the highway in front of it is being dug up and replaced, bit construction mess..also a bit out of the way from everything..syrahgirl, you have to come back to Oregon soon and see how things have changed since your last visit.

Here are a couple of GoLists to give you ideas:

When will you be here? Weather generally changes at the end of Sept. That might make a big difference in where you stay also .. Let us know if we can help more :)

I will refrain from recommending hotels just yet, since I don%26#39;t know which area and price range you are looking for. However, I will recommend to avoid the Riverplace area. The entire area has heavy construction going on and it is a mess.

LOL, great minds think alike:) We were posting at the same time.

I do agree with Scarlett that the 5th Avenue Suites is a fantastic hotel.

Many thanks for the advice. I didn%26#39;t realize that you can get to the gorges %26amp; the beaches so easily from Potland, My husband %26amp; I like to hike %26amp; would enjoy the Mt. Hood area. is there hiking along the beaches as well?

Where do we stay in the Mt. Hood area? We enjoy the nicer B%26amp;B%26#39;s or a 4-5 class hotel. We also appreciate good food, Any suggestions?

if you want a 4 or 5 star hotel...the closest thing mt. hood has is timberline lodge, but it may already be booked. They are really improving government camp/mt hood area. only a few years ago it was a ski %26#39;bum town%26#39;~ now they are building lots of condos and the like- i dont know if you can rent them yet though. The Resort at the Mountain in welches, i have heard is very nice too.

There is great hiking all around the gorge, Mt. Hood, and at the coast.

You can do day trips for all of these, but you may want to split your time so that you are not always driving out of Portland. At Mt. Hood, chinookgirl gave good advice. For the gorge, right in the heart of it is Bridal Veil Lodge. I have not stayed there, but we keep trying and it is booked. That is a good sign, lol! It is on the old scenic highway which is very interesting, and is right in the heart of fantastic hiking. We are hikers/backpackers, so understand how a nice place after a day on the trail is a real treat.

As far as how to split the time, I would pick two areas. Portland and the coast, or Portland and the gorge/Mt. Hood. The gorge/Mt. Hood can easily be combined.

Check out the Columbia Gorge Hotel. It is very nice, the grounds are gorgeous and the Farm Country breakfast is outstanding. It is Historic Hotel and first-class. Have fun! :)

i have resv at the Vagabond Lodge which is ';next door'; to the Columbia Gorge hotel and alot cheaper. It gets pretty good reviews in the Hood River forum...but i cannot comment until late september.
