Mt. Hood area: best place to stay?

My wife and I are headed to Oregon for eight days in September. Our trip will end up in the Mt. Hood area for a day or two before flying home out of Portland. Any recommendations on the best place to stay around Mt. Hood? We%26#39;d like to have a good view (naturally), but also want to be close enough to drive around. The Hood River Hotel and the Vagabond seem like good bets, but I can%26#39;t tell how good the view is from there.

Our itinerary is two days in Portland (Bluebird B%26amp;B), two on the coast (Ester Lee Hotel in Lincoln City, then a yurt farther down on the coast), two days at Tumalo (yurt), then two at Mt. Hood.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Dave

Mt. Hood area: best place to stay?

Timberline Lodge is right there on the mountain. Definitely call now for reservations though.

Mt. Hood area: best place to stay?

You say Mt Hood area but mention places in Hood River. I don%26#39;t tend to think of Hood River as Mt Hood area.

Do you plan to visit the Columbia River Gorge?. Hood River good base for that.

Been awhile but I usually stayed at Hood River Inn and it is now a Best Western. The river side rooms have nice views of the river, the bridge, the sailboarders nd the hills acrosee the river

I don%26#39;t think any of the motels have views of Mt Hood. you have to drive up the hill from the river. to see Mt Hood.

If you really mean Mt Hood I agree with Mtngrl Timberline great choice.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forums. The Columbia Gorge Hotel is very nice. Have a fun trip! :)

What kind of help are you looking for?

Phirl is right, of course. Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood is 40+ miles from Hood River. So if you%26#39;re interested in Mt. Hood, stay there. But, as Mtngrl implies, it%26#39;s a popular place, so make reservations now.

In case Timberline is full, here is a website with other places to stay close by. Go to www.mthood.info/lodging and there will be a list of places. The main website will also give you an idea of the area. Government Camp is the business center of Mt. Hood and is where most of the other hotels are located. It is the closest place besides Timberline.

syrahgirl, have you stayed at the Columbia Gorge Hotel?

How close is it to the Mt Hood area? Thanks.

hey there Scarlett, hows your week-end.?...You were%26#39;nt actually expecting a response to your query were you? ; )

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I was mistaken -- I was under the impression that Hood River was considered part of the Mt. Hood area.

Unfortunately, Timberline Lodge is already booked for the days we need. I should%26#39;ve mentioned that in my original post.

Ok, slightly revised question: it looks to me like the Columbia Gorge/Hood River area is more interesting than staying on or near Mt. Hood. I realize that ';more interesting'; is pretty vague ;-), but we%26#39;re just looking for pretty scenery and a chance to maybe do a little hiking. (This is mostly a get-the-hell-away-from-the-city vacation.)

So...would you recommend the Hood River area over staying closer to Mt Hood?

Thanks much!

Depends. From Hood River, you are closer to the Gorge area, which has great hiking. From Mt. Hood/Government Camp there are also lots of great hiking trails, but it is different than along the gorge. Both places are beautiful.

You%26#39;re getting nowhere fast with us, aren%26#39;t you radiofreenewport, LOL.

';So...would you recommend the Hood River area over staying closer to Mt Hood?';

Actually neither. I%26#39;m wondering why you%26#39;re not staying in Portland again. Both Hood River and Mt. Hood are only about 60 miles from the city, and easily reachable for a full day trip of scenery and/or hiking. When you%26#39;ve had enough for the day, head back to Portland, where you%26#39;ll have so many more options for dining and other activities. If you%26#39;re still craving views, go to Portland City Grill on the 30th floor of the US Bank Tower for drinks and appetizers. ;-)

Or is Portland the city you%26#39;re trying to ';get-the-hell-away-from';?
