looking for a base city Lincoln or Newport

We have about five days for the Oregon Coast, including already having reservations in Crescent City for the Redwoods National Park area. We%26#39;ve already been to Astoria and Portland. Where is the best place to start on the north coast to go south?

Where is the best place to use as a base for two nights?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would also like to stay at a nice hotel on the ocean with a fireplace.

How about Yachats, right in the middle of some of the best of the coast%26#39;s scenery and sightseeing. The Overleaf Lodge (http://www.overleaflodge.com/) exactly meets your criteria for a place to stay there.

With only two nights, there%26#39;s plenty on the central coast to keep you busy. If you had more time, I might suggest starting south from Cannon Beach. How many nights are you staying in Crescent City?

Not real sure of your question? Do you plan to go to Cannon beach/Seaside? or north coast?

I think most of us locals consider Lincoln City/Newport/Florence central coast

Think if you are moving south Newport good base. I agree Yachats is good base too, but mostly for those not going further south

Newport is a harbor town with some good beaches and aquarium 2 lighthouses. historic bayfront.

then fireplace?? maybe Yachats, fireplace kind of place

Just to give you a heads up on the differences between Lincoln City and Newport as towns. This might help you figure out which one you want to be %26#39;based%26#39; out of.

Lincoln City is a typical tourist town, with many things to do, kite flying, shopping, casinos and there are many hotels to choose from. If you like %26#39;urban%26#39; with lots of tourist ammenities- this beach is for you.

Newport is more of a %26#39;working%26#39; town. It has alot of tourist activities too, like the aquariums, the marine research station, and downtown shopping area. There aren%26#39;t as many hotels here on the ocean.

I personally like Newport beacuse it is more picturesque and not as touristy- but I%26#39;m biased since I used to live there.

If you%26#39;ve been to the North Coast, I%26#39;d say Lincoln City is more like Seaside and Newport is more like Astoria. So what ever type of %26#39;feel%26#39; you like to have at the beach is up to you.

Chinook has good response. I too lived near Newport and favor it, so I am also biased.

We have stayed at Inn at Spanish Head 3 or 4 times which is very south end of Lincoln City. Actually in Taft for the old timers here. But that is about it for us in Lincoln City. Depoe Bay %26amp; Newport are better in my view

Just travelled through both Newport and Lincoln City and prefered Newport.

Thanks for the info about the Oregon Coast. Once we leave Crater Lake on Sept. 26 - we have until Oct. 1 to get to Crescent City. I had thought about staying in Bend for a couple of nights.

We like scenery, places for good photos, and wildlife, places for short easy hikes. We don%26#39;t do rapids or things like that.

So - we are combining interior Oregon with the coast and ending up in San Francisco where we have been numerous times - but my husband still wants several days there.

We are planning three nights in Crescent City - figuring to arrive late in the afternoon, and then having two full days for all of the Redwood Parks. Is that too much time?

Suggestion for accommodations in Crescent City - is the Curley Redwood Lodge right in town across from the harbor. The motels is 50%26#39;s style - built from a single redwood tree. Not fancy - but lots of room and rates about an unheard of $50 a night for a double.

Bend is a great place to stay for a few days. We always stay just south of town at Sunriver Resort. All sorts of accommodations there from the River Lodge, the regular lodge, and then condos and homes to rent. We have stayed in numerous homes, and the River Lodge. It is a good location to check out the sites in the area as well as for hiking. Lots of wildlife at the resort as well.
