Weekend trip husband would like

I am planning a weekend trip for me and my husband. This is a celebration for him so I want to plan activities he likes. That means no wine. :( He likes beer. His favorite is Bridgeport. He also like water sports (rafting and anything on the water). He does not like gardents or shopping.

Any suggestions for what we can do in Portland that he would like? Any suggestions on where to stay?

Thanks!

Are you interested in music? If so, what type. Also, do you want to be in the city? Tell us more so we can help more. Thanks!

Go to Henry%26#39;s Tavern in the Brewery Blocks downtown where they have roughly a zillion local beers on tap. Hit it for Happy Hour, but get there early. Right down the street within walking distance is Rogue Brewery and Bridgeport. A short drive up the street is Portland Brewing and New Old Lompoc and several McMenamins. The other direction a short ways is Rock Bottom Brewery.

Watersports - Try the Willamette Jetboat Excursions, or White Water Rafting on the White Salmon River across the way in Washington.

Depending on when you%26#39;re coming, you may even hit one of our many brewfests, or Oktoberfest.

Music - we like classic rock, 80%26#39;s rock and as for modern bands we like My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria among many others. His favorite band is Poison and my favorite band of the 80%26#39;s is Bon Jovi. We love Tesla and Queensryche! Yes, 80%26#39;s kids.

Thanks for all the brew pub suggestions. I also want to make sure we stay in a hotel that is central to it all as far as the drinking part goes.

We may either come in August (August 19th) but there is a chance we can%26#39;t and that means we would not be able to make it until October 20th or later.

I should add that we are coming from Seattle so we may not want to go back into Washington unless it is for something really exciting.

Thanks!

The White Salmon is exciting Class V White Water Rafting that is right across the river from Cascade Locks, Oregon - a long ways from Seattle.

Where to stay..

My favorite hotel is The 5th Avenue Suites . Downtown, centrally located, couple of blocks to Streetcar line which will get you anywhere in town.

Johann %26amp; Sandra suggest Henrys, so do I. They have over 100 beers on tap and an Ice Bar.

Rogue is about 4 blocks away and then Bridgeport is about 5 blocks past that, you can get off the Streetcar right in front of the Bridgeport Pub.

Do Jetboat Tours sound like something you two might enjoy?

This site has all sorts of exciting tours and excursions in Portland, I think there might be something on there that you both would enjoy.

%26lt;%26lt; He does not like gardens or shopping.%26gt;%26gt;

Maybe you can get some ideas from my GoLIst..Hope this helps!

Hi SeattleBrew and welcome to the TA forums! I%26#39;ll advise on where to stay: Riverplace Hotel. It is located right on the waterfront, we have enjoyed several great stays here. My son and his wife also love it and stayed here on their honeymoon last Oct. and again in June when they took friends to Portland.

We also very much enjoyed the Heathman Hotel, located in downtown Portland. Our stay there last month was very nice. Have fun and enjoy your trip! :)

God bless you for planning this trip around your husband%26#39;s interest (hoping some of yours are included, too) and God bless your husband for choosing beer as his drink of choice! ;-)

Here%26#39;s a link to a pdf map with details on the different breweries around the city %26amp; state: http://oregonbeer.org/map2006.pdf

Portland (Beervana) has plenty of options beyond Bridgeport, but a visit to the wholly remodeled ';original'; Bridgeport Pub %26amp; Bakery at NW Marshall/13th is well worth it. They have probably 8-10 of their own beers on tap and that good Happy Hour menu, which I believe runs 4-6pm daily. Beers are $2.50/pt. There%26#39;s some construction going on across the street which makes sitting outside not entirely pleasant, but if it%26#39;s a nice afternoon go out and enjoy anyway.

There%26#39;s also a Bridgeport Ale House on SE Hawthorne, about 10 minutes from downtown, if you care to venture out by car.

I agree with Henry%26#39;s, but with the caveat that it does get VERY crowded in the bar/patio during Happy Hour. If you google ';Henry%26#39;s Tavern'; you should be able to see the restaurant%26#39;s menus, including the extensive beer %26amp; drink lists.

Rogue has a cool, laid-back feel and is a great place to visit. They have 28 of their own beers on tap, including some special ones (John%26#39;s Locker series) which they don%26#39;t ever bottle. The restaurant is non-smoking and there%26#39;s some outdoor picnic bench seating, but the bar area allows smoking and can get kinda stinky sometimes. Regardless, the beers are great, servers are very nice %26amp; knowledgable. There%26#39;s also plenty of swag and beer bottles, growlers, etc. to buy for taking back home to WA.

Wish I could help with the water activities, but that%26#39;s not really my thing. If not readily apparent, the main water recreation that interests me also involves hops, malted barley and yeast! :-)

As for accomodations, choosing any location on the northside of downtown keeps you in a good central location and near the Pearl District, MAX and Streetcar lines. Try Priceline or go with hotels like 5th Avenue Suites, Benson, Hotel Lucia, etc. All the ones Scarlett %26amp; others talk about. Riverplace area is nice but on the far south end of downtown - which makes it pretty isolated - and there%26#39;s lots of ongoing road construction down there, too.

Enjoy your trip to Portland!

Brian

Yes, the highway in front of Riverplace is all dug up and an ongoing construction site, as well as being a bit out of the way and if you want to be IN Portland, downtown is full of great hotels.

syrahgirl, next time you come back to Portland, you must try a new hotel ! :) New ones have been built since you stayed here last ..

Another vote for Henry%26#39;s. They also have a billiards room, with a bar in there which is fun. There are over 100 beers on tap, but they also have a great martini menu.

Also another vote for 5th Avenue Suites. Great location, beautiful hotel, very nice staff. We have stayed there a couple times even though we live here, and our stays were great.
