Itinerary is as follows:
Fly into Portland on Thur. Sept 21st, stay overnight
Drive to Manzanita the next day by way of Astoria, stay Fri 22nd and Sat 23rd in Manzanita
Staying in Gold Beach Wed 27th and Thur 28th
Driving back to portalnd on Fri 29th and staying over in Portland
Flying back on Sat 30th
I am looking for help on where to stay and for how long in between Manzanita and Gold Beach, Sun 23rd thru Tues 26th. I was thinking of Newport, Florence, or Yachats or a combination thereof. Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks
Oregon Coast stop over points
The weather is iffy as we enter Fall season, so I suggest Newport over Yachats and Florence. Newport has many things going for it which have been detailed on this forum; Florence, fewer, but it too has an ';old town'; on the water. And Newport has more indoor things to do as you probably know ffrom its website. South of Newport, Waldport, Yachats and Cape Perpetua is one of my favorite visual and walking sections of the coast, so if the weather is decent, you gotta see them. Even if the weather isn%26#39;t nice...

I vote for Newport. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is nice and you are close to Lincoln City, also that is a fun place. We enjoyed shopping at the Tanger Outlets there and had a nice dinner at the Blackfish Cafe.
We also liked Gleneden Beach, we lunched at the Salishan Lodge %26amp; Spa which is gorgeous. We want to stay here sometime for a couple of nights and take in their gorgeous spa there. Have a nice trip! :)
I strongly advise you consider Yachats for two primary reasons. One, it is centrally located thus a great place to use as a base while you explore the central Oregon Coast. Newport is about 30 minutes north and Florence, 40 minutes south. No question there is more to do in Newport but, as a previous poster pointed out, there a several things worth doing/seeing between Yachats and Florence such as Cape Perpetua and Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint. Not to mention this drive is arguably the most scenic along the coast. Two, Yachats has two of the nicest motels on the entire coast in the Adobe and Overleaf. Read the reviews here and believe them.

Thanks for your help. Does it make sense to stay one night in Newport and then one in Yachats and one possibly in Bandon, before heading on to Gold Beach? Or do you recommend staying all 3 nights in the same place between Manzanita and Gold Beach?
I am trying to see everything, but I dont want to be spending the entire time in the car driving. Thanks again.
As a Portlander and a newbie also, I would only recommend that you heed the advice of dengay and voyager :)
needstimeoff,
Your question is a personal one. For me, I like having a home base to work from. We spent a long weekend in Manzanita last weekend, We visited friends and family from Gearhart to Tillamook from there.
Does it make sense to stay one night in Yachats then one in Bandon??? It%26#39;s certainly doable.

needstimeoff,
I like your username, and so do I, hahaha!
';I am trying to see everything, but I dont want to be spending the entire time in the car driving.';
How about packing and unpacking, and checking in and out of hotels? I prefer to do as Den suggested, stay in one place and use it as a base. And I%26#39;d second his recommendation for Yachats too. We stayed in the Overleaf last year, and it really is one of the nicer places on the coast. The beachscape there is nothing short of spectacular.
The drive to Gold Beach from Yachats is a fairly long one. But since you%26#39;ll have already visited points as far south as Florence, you won%26#39;t have too many reasons to stop until you get to Port Orford. Well, unless you%26#39;re a golfer, in which case you MUST stop at Bandon Dunes.
Sounds like a nice trip, and I%26#39;m glad to see that you%26#39;re giving yourself enough time to appreciate and enjoy Oregon%26#39;s coast.
Thanks for everyone%26#39;s input....decision is made.
Portland one night, Manzanita two nights, Yachats three nights, Gold Beach two nights, Portland one night
Two last questions:
In the first post it mentions ';iffy weather'; does that mean rain or cold or cold and rain? I live in AZ and it is 105 and sunny during these dates.
Any suggestions on where to stay in Portland? I am just there the first day and lasy day of my trip. I was looking at two areas Pearl District or Nob Hill.....are these good areas to stay or would you recommend somewhere else?
Obviously there are no guarantees, but it usually doesn%26#39;t start raining around here until the middle of October. Just as obvious, don%26#39;t expect temps of 105, lol. High temps on the coast at that time of year are probably low to mid 60%26#39;s, but with any wind, could feel much cooler. So you might want to bring the warmest clothes in your closet!
Pearl District and NW 21st and 23rd Streets (';Nob Hill'; to tourists) are most noted for shopping and dining, but have few visitor lodging options. You might look at Inn at Northrup Station, but you%26#39;d likely prefer a central downtown hotel. 5th Avenue Suites, Lucia, Benson, Heathman, Governor, Vintage Plaza are the usual suspects. What%26#39;s your budget?
Mistletoe - The two places that I am considering in Portland are the Hotel Lucia and Park Lane Suites, mainly because of the reviews on this site and the location. Any thoughts?
