ok, i admit these are two strange questions...but i have been asking and reading the forums long enough that my questions on things to do, hotels to stay in have been asked and answered.
(1) what kind of seafood is the pac NW known for? In san fran it was mostly crab, Maine was lobster...what can i expect in PDX and SEA?
(2) Has anyone seen or know where I can find an ';Asian Peach';(i am assuming that is the name of them--the sign was in chinese). I found these in a produce market in chinatown in SF last Sept and I cannot locate them here in the midwest. They are about the size of a softball and are a peach, but instead of the fleshy texture of the georgia peaches they are lighter in taste and have the texture of a pear/apple--crisp/crunchy. Has anyone run across them in their travels to the farmers markets?
Thanks for any info/thoughts!
seafood and fresh produce
Right now in Astoria the boats are bringing in Tuna for $1.48 a lb or so. Some years are better than others, we also get our share of salmon. Lots of my father%26#39;s friends are crabbers, and we even get crabs in Seaside .. I heard they are getting alot right now. Finally Razor clams are very unique to the NW, so if you ever have a chance to get some do it! Butter clams are also harvested near where I live but in Washington mostly, very good too. All that to say, lots of seafood ;). All types, just ask if it is fresh!
I haven%26#39;t heard of that type of fruit, I would google search it to make sure you have all the common names.
seafood and fresh produce
Rivergallery,
I was hoping one of the ';natives'; would answer. I also posted a question in astoria (which is where I think you are from) Thanks for the seafood update. Surprisingly enough, i am not a huge fan, but my mom is so looking forward to fresh seafood. (not that we don%26#39;t get it here in the midwest, but its not the same as off the boat that morning!!)
I have hunted all over for that fruit and i think the fact that no one seems to know of it makes the hunt more frustrating (but hard to stop!!) oh well, i%26#39;ll just have to head back to SF to get some fruit--sounds like a good enough excuse to travel. :-)
It sounds yummy. I was born in Astoria Memorial ;). But grew up in Seaside, Then moved out 26 from CB/SEASIDE jct, about 20minutes or so (Still considered Seaside) Then about 5 yrs ago or so I moved out East of Astoria City Limits about 15minutes or so. But I still have an Astoria Address. So yes I would say I am as native as you get pretty much!
I agree, Rivergallery, you are definitely the Only Native on the boards for Seaside/Astoria...or Cannon Beach too,!! :)
I think you are talking about an Asian Pear. there are several varieties of asian pears and they are round-ish in shape and have a bit ';tougher'; skin on them. They are more crunchy like an apple and have the mealy texture of a pear.
Good ones are very juicy!
We have them in the grocery stores in Tigard and our farmer%26#39;s market...they are about a buck a piece unless you find a good sale. I know they are grown in the upper central valley of California, and I imagine pretty much anyplace that you can grow regular pears.
This link has more information on Asian pears and photos...hope it helps.

I know what Asian Pears are, the Peach refference thru me off.
rereading it .. sounds like Asian Pears... LOL
My neighbors have a tree other than that I haven%26#39;t seen them often.
Those Asian pears sound interesting. I know pears grow really well in central WA...I graded enough of those during summer breaks from college that to this day I cannot stand them, lol!
Dungeneous crab, salmon, and razor clams are what our specialties are here in OR. So after trying those you, will have to try the other good seafoods as well:)
Is there a particular reason you left oysters off your list, Mtngrl? ;-)
mistletoe--LOL! Yes, actually. I am one of the few that gags at the thought of them. Those and mushrooms. EWWWW!!!!!
