We are traveling from Salem down to San Fran in November. We wanted to drive down the coast, spending about 3 days en route. We%26#39;re thinking of hitting the aquarium and other sights in newport and then heading down, maybe staying over in Florence or Yachats first night; Crescent City or Gold Beach next and then Mendocino CA the third night. Are these doable drives or am I not splitting it up enough??
Any advice on good newish hotels and any other tips much appreciated. THANKS!
Coast Driving Trip to San Fran
I think your plan is quite doable. I%26#39;d stay at the Overleaf Lodge in Yachats. We had excellent accomodations there. In November, you shouldn%26#39;t have any problem finding lodging, so you could just find what looks good to you between Gold Beach and Crescent City when you%26#39;re ready to stop for the night. If you want to reserve, try the Tu Tu Tun in Gold Beach. Also, just a note - when I lived in San Francisco many years ago, no one ever called it San Fran without getting a big frown, or worse :)
Coast Driving Trip to San Fran
The drive down Cal-1 is a long one. and slow. I would consider going on down 101. So you can take make more stops.. The redwoods are also worth a visit. And you will have seen some pretty good coast south from Newport.
Cal-1 for much of length is well above the ocean great land forms, but last time we did it going north I was ready for something new.
Thanks so much for the tips!
Decided to skip the Tuttutun Lodge - doesn%26#39;t seem kid friendly and I will have a 7 year old with me.
Does anyone know about the Riverhouse Motel in Florence?
I%26#39;ve stayed at the Riverhouse in Florence quite a bit. I like it- clean, friendly, good location and views. The only thing that I could say bad about it would be that it is right next to the bridge, so you can hear that at night. It doesn%26#39;t bother me, but thought you should know.
Thanks everybody for your advice.
I decided on the RiverHouse in Florence for night one, Hampton Inn in Crescent City for night two and now have to figure out California.
:) You were a great help!
