Coastal Crabbing

We%26#39;re headed to Oregon Coast next month and are hoping there might be a few crab left... any ideas about hot spots? We%26#39;re hoping to find a place that could boil them for us~ would appreciate any suggestions. Also~ we%26#39;ve heard different things about the best time of day to go out (high tide vs. low tide). Any words of wisdom?

Coastal Crabbing

They do crabbing in Newport on the old bay front, also in Garibaldi at the pier.

Great crabbing in Astoria too, though mostly from a boat there.

We%26#39;ve only technically gone crabbing once, so we have no wisdom, just observations, on this subject. :-)

Check out this website for more ideas:

Coastal Crabbing

Well all the months that end in R are suppose to be the best. Never tried to prove it though. I can tell you some of the pressure is off now because a lot of the people who were here for the Salmon have left now and many of them had pots and rings out all the time when they were camping here. As for tides the slack tides seem to be the best. (When the tide has slowed before it changes direction) The crabs can move more freely and not fight the water so much. If there is rain before you get here it could be bad crabbing. The fresh water drives the crabs out. As for cooking try either Griff%26#39;s or Sportsman%26#39;s cannery in Winchester Bay and if you are crabbing in Charleston/Coos Bay there is a few places there in downtown Charleston that I believe do it. I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find places to cook crabs in most of the areas that crabbing is done like Bandon, Newport, Waldport and many others.

Thanks much for the info! I know the coastal weather changes on a dime... has it been a typical fall? Here%26#39;s hoping for a few days of dry weather. We%26#39;re staying in Lincoln City, so I think we%26#39;ll shoot for crabbing in Newport or Waldport.

This fall has been pretty dry and warm to this piont. The El Nino that has formed should continue to keep us mostly dry, but we are heading into a wet stretch. As long as no BIG rains come, the crabs will probably stay in the bays for a while.
