Lincoln City vs. Cannon Beach

I am new to the beach scene here in Oregon. I%26#39;ve been to Lincoln City a few times and stayed at a house in Salishan. I came across a home there and interested in purchasing but I am chasing down some thoughts as to which beach in Oregon is the place to be...I%26#39;ve cannon beach is popular but never been there. Any thoughts

Lincoln City vs. Cannon Beach

In terms of beaches, both are comparable. In terms of towns, they are worlds apart. LC is approx 4 times the size of CB. It also has more of a carnival feel....very busy most of the year. A Seaside/LC comparison would be easier to make. CB reminds me very much of Lahaina Town on the Island of Maui

That being said, it all depends on what you are looking for in a town.

Lincoln City vs. Cannon Beach

Don%26#39;t think I would call Salishan or any point south of there Lincoln City. There is a whole separate community along that stretch

of 101, one I rather like. Gleneden beach, Lincoln Beach, Depoe Bay. we stay 3 to 4 weeks per year in Depoe Bay. we have a fractional ownership there of condo. We do go into Taft of south part of Lincoln City but avoid the rest. well a few go to outlet mall.

People I have met there consider themselves from one of above communities. I have not met many from Salishan so not real sure about them. but would guess they say Gleneden Beach.

I prefer the central coast. I we ever do buy more than what we now have it will be on central coast. we look at property fairly often there. .

But as newcomer I suggest you check out north coast before you buy. It is a little closer to most of portland area.

We love the Cannon Beach area. We spent the majority of the summer on the coast in Seaside which we also enjoy very much. I would suggest spending some time in Cannon Beach. I have several photos posted on this forum of Ecola State Park, downtown Cannon Beach and Indian Beach.

Good luck and welcome to the forums! :)

I don%26#39;t know about from Happy Valley, but from my home in a SW Portland suburb, the drive to the central coast is an hour longer than the one to Cannon Beach. And that%26#39;s when traffic is flowing, which isn%26#39;t always the case on 99W and hwy 18. If it were my decision, that alone would be a big driver. Home prices in Cannon Beach are out of sight, though, so you might also consider beach communities between there and Tillamook.

I%26#39;ve read elsewhere your comparison of Cannon Beach to Lahaina, Den. I don%26#39;t remember that you said it was a good or a bad thing in that post either, but I guess any comparison between Cannon Beach and any place in Hawaii can%26#39;t be too bad. We were there Sat. afternoon, until the fog and clouds rolled in and the temps dropped about 20 degrees in two hours.

So we took my daughter and her friend up to your beloved Seaside, syrahgirl, so they could ride the bumper cars. Lovely.... bumper to bumper, and elbow to elbow traffic all along Broadway, the smell of corn dogs in the air, video and carnival game sounds spilling onto the street from the many arcades... I have to say, most of the people seemed to be enjoying themselves.

mistletoe,

You are absolutely correct. I have made the reference between CB and Lahaina Town b4. It%26#39;s probably high time I clarify what I mean by that :-0

First, let me say that visiting Lahaina Town last November was one of the highlights of our trip to Maui. That being said, here are the similarities from my point of view:

1) Both are historic towns-Lahaina is whaling; CB is the end of the Oregon Trail.

2) Both have their main streets lined with all manner of shops and restaurants.

3) Both sit directly on the Pacific Ocean (albeit, it%26#39;s normally about 30 degrees + warmer on Maui)

4) The best way to explore both towns is by walking.

Hope this clarifys what I mean.

Seaside sounds like the Jersey Shore :(

Scarlett--It is worse. Now, I have only been to the Jersey Shore once, and it was during a hurricane (don%26#39;t ask, lol!), and it did not seem near as tacky, IMO.

More to Seaside than mess on Broadway. Nice beach, one of best bike riding towns on coast. some decent motel prices. And you can enjoy Cannon Beach with a quick drive. And also Astoria.

Puzzling over Lahaina and Cannon Beach comparison. And the walk around town is good one. You did say old town??

some call Kaanapali Lahaina which is like Waikiki or Myrtle Beach, Have not been to Jersey shores. I should not have thrown Myrtle Beach in this discussion. I may go to Kaaanapali some day again, but never Myrtle Beach. Hilton Head yes

What were we talking about? .

We discussed moving to the coast in several years. We were in Beaverton, but moved south near Medford / Jacksonville, to get away from traffic for a while.

With a choice between Lincoln City and Cannon Beach, the decision would be quick. Cannon Beach.

Not just for the community, but what%26#39;s around it. With Manzanita to the south, and Seaside / Gearhart to the north, there is a lot available. And, Cannon Beach is a quick 75 minute drive from all the resources of Portand, without having to live in Portland. Including the Columbia River Gorge if you like outdoors activities.

We would pick Brookings, but we can do as well up north, and would prefer to have access to the metro area.

Certainly, you have seen Cannon Beach Images. Ecola Park is next to it.

If not, copy and paste the fragment of URL if this doesn%26#39;t display as a hyperlink...

Pick the Oregon Coast Album. Several images in there are from Nehalem Bay, Cannon Beach / Ecola Park and Seaside. My favorite coastal region.

I%26#39;ve never been fond of Salishan (I admit, it%26#39;s probably because my mother didn%26#39;t think it was all that when I was a kid) and I most definitely would not consider it a part of Lincoln City.

I grew up going to the beaches further south -- Neskowin was always a favorite -- but it%26#39;s been years since I%26#39;ve gone south just because I now live in Portland and it%26#39;s a pain to drive that far when there are closer options. If the drive won%26#39;t bother you, you might look in that direction. I can%26#39;t make any specific recommendations as it%26#39;s been years but I%26#39;d start with Neskowin (just because I have such fond memories).

For a number of years, I loved Lincoln City but I%26#39;ve been converted to a Cannon Beach / Arch Cape lover by DH.

I%26#39;ve never cared for Seaside (the whole arcade, cotton candy atmosphere turns me off something awful) but maybe that%26#39;s because I was raised on the quieter beaches of Neskowin, North Bend/Coos Bay and the like. I%26#39;ve always viewed going to the beach as an ';away'; from the masses, the noise and civilization -- a retreat to privacy and quiet. If I want people and hubbub on the beach, I think of sunny destinations such as S. California. A lot of people really love Seaside though, including a dear friend who passed away recently, so I don%26#39;t want to disparrage it. For some people, it is just what they are looking for, lively and fun and it does offer things you won%26#39;t find in many of the other coastal communities.

Although Cannon Beach is no where near Seaside (atmosphere-wise), even it is a bit populated for my tastes which is why DH and I love Arch Cape so much. We have all of the privacy and quiet and are a mere 4 miles from Cannon so that we can enjoy the restaurants, occasional shops, etc without much effort at all.

Other communities you might check out - Pacific City, Manzanita and Gearhart. We have friends that have homes in all of them and are quite loyal for various reasons.
