Looks like we might make a trip to the Oregon coast in Oct sometime. Hubby usually goes once a year for deep sea fishing with his buddy.
Our Hawaiian vacation fell to pieces (thanks to AA) and I need to go someplace to ';get away';.
I have looked at VRBO for a condo and have bookmarked a couple of them. Does anyone know of anymore condos in the area? Would like it to be ocean front. Anywhere from Newport to Depot Bay. They will be fishing from Depot Bay.
I%26#39;m just going to hang around the condo, or hopefully be able to do some shop gazing. Are there many antique shops around?
I also collect beach type stuff. Shells, whatever...
What is the weather usually like it Oct.? I suppose not bathing suit weather?? That%26#39;s ok... I can still walk along the beach with a sweatshirt?
oct...
Looks like there%26#39;s an opening last week of Sept. at this condo...Nye Sands condominium. Anyone know what these are like?
oct...
When I was younger, we went to Newport and south so I can%26#39;t really accurately talk of shops, etc as it%26#39;s been years since I%26#39;ve been (DH and I live in Pdx so we tend to go Cannon and north).
One thing you might do, if you%26#39;re up to it, is go crabbing with your partner. DH and I went a few years ago in Newport (we drove down there specifically to do so) and went out with a guy that just takes people out. I can%26#39;t tell you how much fun we had. It was cold and there wasn%26#39;t a potty but we had the best time. Reeling the crab pots in, joking around with the crusty captain (and he was crusty -- made the experience even better).
Weather - Dress in layers. Be prepared for wind and cold. Sometimes the weather will be warm but don%26#39;t count on it (especially not warm enough for a swimsuit). I find that a sweatshirt frequently isn%26#39;t enough to keep me warm. Bring a good windbreaker (something along the lines of a light ski jacket -- a Goretex shell works well). And wear 1-2 layers under the sweatshirt. You can always peel them off but if you%26#39;re without, you%26#39;re stuck being cold. Also, bring gloves, a hat and a scarf. When the wind picks up, your ears get cold mighty fast. If you have longer hair, bring something to pull your hair back or you%26#39;ll get knots.
I prefer to think of Oregon beaches as being stormy, passionate and moody in the winter (if you%26#39;re lucky, you%26#39;ll actually get a storm). Our beaches typically aren%26#39;t the kind for lazy days in swimsuits getting a tan. Both have their benefits, as long as you%26#39;re prepared. If it%26#39;s particularly cold and windy, bundle up, think cozy thoughts and head out to relish the turmoil of the ocean and the refreshing whip of the wind knowing that when you get back, you can indulge in a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate and maybe a toasty bowl of chowder to warm you to the toes. Maybe it%26#39;s because I grew up experiencing the Oregon coast but, to me, I find the whole experience very comforting and peaceful. Hopefully you will too.
Sounds like you really enjoy your little piece of Oregon. But ok, I have to say..... a parka, gloves, hat, scarf, wind (knots in my hair)? Really??
Oh my.... it%26#39;s just me but that sounds awful. I don%26#39;t need to bring a swimsuit but I%26#39;d sure like to laze around the condo in shorts and T shirts and be semi warm, not be cold. We live in SLC and where we live, we tend to get wind. I%26#39;d like to be someplace that is calming, and not have to wear my winter clothing.
I was there a LONG time ago with my hubby but I can%26#39;t remember what month we went. I have pictures of me in a down coat and gloves while crabbing off one of the piers. Hubby loves it but I was very cold.
hmmm... might have to re-think this now.
I guess I was thinking that end of Sept. beginning of Oct. would still be warm enough for just a sweatshirt. Oh, and I get cold very easily.
Hi kukuinut..
SparkleFufu is a longtime resident of Portland and I tend to listen to what she and the other locals say. As a visitor, I was here a couple of years ago for 10 days in Sept and there was not one drop of rain. Therefore, I began to wonder about those dire warnings of constant rain. Then we moved here and winter set in....lol. So now I listen when the locals tell me things :)
The Wind always blows at the Coast. That is an excellent tip about something to keep your hair from knotting. Or to keep it from ending up in your eyes and mouth :)
I too like to collect shells and beachglass, I think the warm sweaters over tees and jeans or khakis over socks and shoes (that can get wet/sandy) and a good warm windbreaker, with a hat will suffice.
But sadly, no bathing suits.
The Coast here reminds me of my New England beach days during the winter..not as cold but grey and windy and yes, very dramatic..I think the beaches here have even more Drama :)
You never know when you will get a storm or a calm beautiful day and they can come one after the other..so best packing advice is bring something for the worst weather and a lot of layers.
Here is a Newport Oregon weather averages chart:

Well does anyone have an idea what the Nye sands condos are like?
As long as it doesn%26#39;t snow! LOL.

This is a great site for info and just looking at photos.
Have you seen the condos online?
I googled the condos,
vacationrentals.com/vacation-rentals/5636.ht…
It rarely snows here, so you might be ok LOL
If you are able to wear shorts and a t-shirt at our coast in October, then we are having extremely rare weather:)
Definitely plan on bundling up. Even if it is not rainy, the wind might get you. Fleece is good, but wear something to block the wind over that.
kukuinut01 - I hope I didn%26#39;t scare you off with the cold weather warning. I just would rather you be prepared than to be completely miserable (nothing like being cold and not having warm clothes to put on). I promise, it%26#39;s really beautiful and IMO, we have wonderful sand on *most* of our beaches (soft, not rocky or chunky), which makes for perfect walking (I%26#39;m partial, even in the winter, to walking in my barefeet at the beach).
It would be Highly unlikely to get snow at that time of the year so I would not worry about that if I were you. It does happen on occasion but those occasions tend to be in December or January.
Unfortunately, I%26#39;m not familiar with the condos you mention. Hopefully someone else is.
Also, if your DH is busy fishing during the day, you can always take daytrips to some of the nearby communities if you%26#39;re not in the beach mood. Corvallis is only a couple of hours drive from Newport and has some shopping (Zooey%26#39;s is nice and I think the Cannery Mall is still around). There are some fun little antique shops in Albany (right next to Corvallis) too.
If you want to venture away from the coast, then Corvallis would be the closest place. It is only about 55 miles or so, and takes just over an hour. Not a bad drive at all. There is the one mall there (not a whole lot to it), and some small stores, but it is a college town and so caters to that age, demographic.
However, if I were you, I would stay along the coast. The OR coast is so beautiful no matter what the weather is. There are lots of small shops all around the Newport, Depoe Bay and Lincoln City areas.
This is the condo I was looking at:
