We are going with a group to Portland area to visit a few wineries. Most of the group have been to this area. My husband and I never visited. Could you suggest a few places we could visit in a morning or afternoon? We could probably get away at least 2 times. I think someone recommended a gorge?
Thanks,

Labor Day weekend trip
The Columbia River Gorge is a definite must see! A great day trip, and you can make it a short trip or a longer one.
A long option would be to head east out of Portland on I-84, get off at either exit #17(Troutdale) or #22 (Corbett) and head east along the old scenic highway. Great stops along the way include the Vista House, Portland Women%26#39;s Forum (yes, odd name but great views), various falls along the way, and then finally Multnomah Falls/Multnomah Lodge. Walk to the very top of the falls, not just the little bridge. it is a 1 mile walk on a paved trail, til the very top when the pavement stops. Beautiful! Head back down, keep heading east on the old highway into Hood River, Head south on HWY 35 along the backside of Mt. Hood. Hook up with HWY 26 westbound, head up to Timberline Lodge. Head back to Portland on HWY 26 westbound. This is about 140 miles total. Right now, there are several fires on the back side of Mt. Hood, so HYW 35 has been closed, but I would be surprised if that would still be the case by the time your trip happens.
A shorter option, would be to head out to the gorge like I described earlier, but then either cross over to the WA side and head back to Portland that way, or just get back on I-84 and head back.
If you need other day trip suggestions, just ask. There are a lot of locals on here with lots of good advice!
Labor Day weekend trip
Where do we turn back for the short trip? Is that at the Bridge of the Gods?
How long is each trip? I think we will have about 4 hours.

With only 4 hours, do the short trip. You can either head over to Cascade Locks and take the Bridge of the Gods over to the WA side and follow 14 back, or just take I-84 on the OR side back. I-84 will be faster, so if you spend more time in the Gorge, that might be the best. After Multnomah Falls, you keep heading east a bit on the old scenic highway and then there is a sign for getting back onto I-84 westbound.
I really appreciate your quick and helpful respones. I hope the weather will be good.
Thanks again,

Yep, Mtngrl didn%26#39;t get the designation Local Expert for nuthin%26#39;. ;-)
Will your group be touring Portland together, or would like suggestions for what to do locally with the rest of your free time?
I agree with mistletoe, Local Expert in this case went to the perfect person.
Labor Day weekend brings the Art in the Pearl to the Pearl District .. if you are in town on one of those days :)

Flattery will get you everywhere:)
LOL in my case, it is not flattery.
I have gotten lost much less since I have been asking you for directions. At least you answer the question with advice instead of what you had to eat last night lol...
Hi, on one of your days head out to the Dundee area. We had a nice lunch at Tina%26#39;s, across from the Argyle tasting room. We loved our visits to Torii Mor, Domaine Serene (some of the Pinot Noir in Oregon) and Sokkol Blosser. We finished off our day in Dayton with an excellent meal at Joel Palmer House. I have a review with photos of our meal there if you%26#39;re looking for a great way to end your afternoon in the wine country.
Cheers! The Columbia River Gorge is also very nice. We enjoyed our afternoon there after an amazing brunch at the Heathman Hotel, where we stayed in PDX. :)
So do you have good winery plan?? I got some good help here with women wine tour thread for 3 women in my family. Mistletoe really good help. and I am local, but still needed help.
