To clam or not to clam...

Hello All:

I%26#39;m new here, but I%26#39;ve been hanging out for about a month. This forum was very helpful while planning our first trip to the Oregon Coast last month. We stayed in a yurt at Nehalem Bay. We had so much fun, we%26#39;re doing it again next week. This time, we%26#39;re staying at Cape Lookout and bringing my sister and her family. I%26#39;ve lived in Seattle my whole life and have never had the chance to visit. I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve said the word, ';Wow';, so many times in my life! The scenery was so beautiful I was at a loss for words, (which if you knew me, you would never believe). My dream is to retire in Tillamook. Where else could I have a small farm practically on the beach?!!

I was wondering if anyone knew if we%26#39;ll be able to dig for clams while we%26#39;re there, (8/28-9/1). I went online, but it seems there are some different opinions as to when it is. If so, what%26#39;s the limit and where can we get a license? Also, I know there has been some red tide issues here on the Washington Coast.

I%26#39;d also like to know if there%26#39;s anyone who might know of a good place to go shooting, (at targets, not animals). We asked a sporting good store employee, and he said that shooting was basically permitted anywhere in the forest area which kind of made me nervous. He gave us directions to a logging road, but we don%26#39;t want to take even the slightest chance of shooting close to a campsite, park, loggers, Bambi, etc.

Since it was our first time there last month, we just kind of touched on everything because there%26#39;s so much to take in. Is the Tillamook tour worth the time?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In regards to clamming...I%26#39;ve only really clammed during the winter so I%26#39;m not sure if the season is open or not. It sounds like you are doing the right things...checking on-line. My idea would be to check with Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife-they will have all the info you need. I believe the limit is your first 12 clams(no throwing back if you break %26#39;em while claming). You do need a licence- I don%26#39;t remember the exact price, but it is pretty cheap for a few hours of fun.

As far as target shooting-I%26#39;d go with the advice from a local or someone from the Tillamook State Forest. They%26#39;d probably just direct you to a rock quarry somewhere in the woods. :)

Razor clamming is closed north of Cape Perpetua (Yachats area) due to high levels of domoic acid and typically bay clams are not so good in late summer due to warm waters and clam-flats.

Hi and welcome to the Forums! June was a great month for razor clamming. We stayed at the Tides by the Sea in Seaside, by Ave. U and had great luck. The clammers were fun to watch and photograph, also. :)

The 3-day non-resident shellfish license is $9. I would check with local sporting goods shop about any restictions on clamming. Sometimes certain areas or types are restricted or recommend you only eat so much.

As for shooting I would talk to the same people. I know it%26#39;s getting close to some of the archery seasons so their could be hunters in the area. And rifle season isn%26#39;t too far off and I%26#39;ve already heard some of them out sighting in guns in the forest. Another thing you may have to contend with is area closures right now. We haven%26#39;t had any rain in a while and areas are closed due to fire restrictions especially if their run by timber companies.

Just an update, general bow season opens on 8/26 so just be careful if your out shooting. A good sporting goods store should be able to point you in the right direction so theres no conflict with the bow hunters.

As of yesterday, ODFW opened razor claming from Tillamook Head (between Seaside and Cannon Beach) south to the Calif border.

NOTE: Clatsop County Beaches remain closed until mid-Sept.
