Trip report

We spent a couple of days in Astoria recently during our road trip from Mt Hood to San Francisco and just wanted to say how much we liked the town and area!

We stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel which was just stunning inside and out (see review). We loved the boats and bird life around the river and the sea lions lazing around the piers.

The town itself was lovely, especially viewed from on top of the Astoria Column (which is even more beautiful than photos suggest by the way), with the blues of the water blending with the greens of the hills and trees, and the colourful old houses sprinkled in between. Great view! And, yes, it was great fun flying the wooden planes off the top and watching them twirl around in the breeze!

We also had a good time at Cape Disappointment, finding the Lewis and Clark Centre fascinating and then enjoying a half-mile walk for a picnic out on the headland overlooking the Pacific by the lighthouse. Then we went on to Fort Clatsop, Lewis and Clark%26#39;s camp, for another interesting hour.

With good meals at the Silver Salmon and the Baked Alaska, we had a terrific couple of days. Great town!

Trip report

Great report...glad your time was a good one.

How%26#39;s Fort Clatsop looking these days? Is the rebuilding going nicely? Nice to hear that you got a clear day to climb the column...whenever we pass through it%26#39;s always cloudy or foggy...but yeah, I love to toss off little planes, though we always use paper ones, wood would probably work better :)

Trip report

Hi dwm and thanks for reporting back with us! I%26#39;m glad you enjoyed Astoria, it is such a quaint little town and so full of history and charm. It%26#39;s amazing to see the changes the town has gone through over the past few years.

Silver Salmon is one of our favorite places to dine. Jeff %26amp; Laurie have done a wonderful job establishing this restaurant as one of Astoria%26#39;s finest. We have not had such good luck with the food at Baked Alaska, but the views are amazing from the dining room there.

Coxcomb Hill (Astor Column) is a great place to get a good view of the town, Astoria-Megler Bridge and the Columbia River. :)

Yes, it%26#39;s great to read reports from visitors, especially those from out-of-country, who enjoyed their stay in Oregon. And it appears you were here during a stretch of good weather; a bonus for this time of year. The Cape Disappointment views are spectacular, aren%26#39;t they....

I%26#39;ve decided to no longer recommend the Astoria Column and more specifically, flying balsa wood airplanes from the top. The fewer that know about it, the less likely some radical environmentalist is to try and put a stop to the fun.

I looked back at a few of your earlier posts. Did you make it to Crater Lake?

Fort Clatsop looked good to us - it seemed to be rebuilt fully, and we had a good walk through the woods down to the water.

We didn%26#39;t get to Crater Lake but we did have a lovely few days going down the coast. It%26#39;s certainly a spectacular drive stopping for a stroll at Ecola, Cape Meares, Cape Foulweather etc, then we had a couple of wonderful days at the Heceta Head lightstation B%26amp;B.

We really loved Oregon - mainly the fresh air, terrific forest walks and ocean views. Oh and the Tillamook ice cream! Definitely a corner of the States to be cherished.
